Ozzie Owl awoke with a start - there was a noise outside his tree that had woken him up. He stretched his wings, then noticed what had happened. He was shocked. Someone had dumped rubbish all over the ground at the base of his tree and there was a real mess! This is a problem I must sort out thought Ozzie to himself, but I need some help from my friends first. 1
2
Ozzie gathered his friends Peter Possum, Penny Pelican and Mollie Mullet. Someone has been dumping rubbish in our forest and we must stop it! exclaimed Ozzie. I have noticed more littering in my favourite creek replied Mollie. I have seen some suspicious people at night time dropping bags over fences said Peter. This calls for a flyover said Penny, I will check out the problem and report back straight away! 3
4
Penny flew over the nearby town and noticed litter in parks and on roadways as well as dumped rubbish on vacant land. She flew back to her friends with the grim news There s a lot of litter and dumped rubbish in the town and in our bushland said Penny. We need to take urgent action to clean this up said Ozzie, but we need help from our human friends first I will find where they are. 5
6
Ozzie found Jackson and Brooke playing at a park. He landed in a tree and flapped his wings for attention. Look, it s our friend Ozzie Owl said Jackson excitedly. What s up Ozzie? asked Brooke. We need your help to clean up our bushland and your town replied Ozzie, as some humans have been dumping rubbish and litter there. Sure said Brooke, you can count on us - we will get our gloves and rakes. 7
8
Jackson and Brooke helped the animal friends clean up the bushland and the nearby creek that Mollie lived in. We need to clean up our town too said Brooke, let s visit the Mayor and get some more help from the Council! replied Jackson. We will need all the community to work together with us! stated Brooke. 9
10
The Mayor was very keen to help, so she organised a community clean up. Brooke and Jackson found lots of helpers and they cleaned the parks, the roadways and the reserves. This town has never looked so clean and tidy said the Mayor excitedly. We need to keep it this way now, and that involves some more action replied Brooke. 11
12
Brooke and Jackson met with Ozzie to find out how to stop rubbish dumping and littering in the future. If we have some signs and cameras to photograph people dumping, that would be a good start said Ozzie. Maybe some more litter bins on the streets and in the parks said Peter. Great - that s a good list for us to take to the Council, so let s go said Jackson. 13
14
The Mayor loved the ideas on how to reduce littering and improve the environment. Soon there were more litter bins in the streets and parks, new signs on the parks and reserves. Ozzie got the job of monitoring all the cameras that were placed in trees to catch dumpers and Penny was made an honorary litter ranger as she could patrol the whole area. Peter worked at night time using his great vision to catch rubbish dumpers. 15
16
Jackson and Brooke helped design a new education program to try and stop people dumping rubbish. They organised classes on the riverbank and showed lots of people why rubbish dumping and littering was bad for the environment. They even had some shirts printed that read Help stop the litterbugs! 17
18
Soon the town, the forest and the waterways were clean again. The animals and humans had worked together to protect their environment. We have done such a great job as a community said the Mayor, that I am going to enter our town in the Clean and Green Awards! 19
20
After the judging was done, Brooke and Jackson s town was named the tidiest town in the whole area. The Council received the award but the Mayor chose to erect it right under the tree where Ozzie lived. This is in recognition of the great work that the Clean and Green Gang have done for our area said the Mayor, thanks again to all of them. Everyone cheered loudly but as it was daytime Ozzie was sound asleep. 21
