1 Westie Updates Vol. 5 No. 3 March 7, 2018 President s Message Looking forward to seeing everyone in Perry, Georgia for our National Roving specialty!! Remember to send in your entries, your RV or Hotel reservations and your Banquet reservations!!! This Roving is not to be missed!! There is something for everyone! Come one, come all!! Entries close at Onofrio on March 28 th, 2018 A message from the Vice President For several months now, your Board has been discussing how to address inappropriate social media posts concerning our members. Our designated club chat list always reminds us: If you can t say something nice, don t say nothin at all. But what do we, as a club, do about demeaning social media posts that may appear on Facebook or Twitter? Defamatory posts can go international without the defamed person having recourse. The Board, in its various discussions, has called this behavior cyber bullying. When I think of cyber bullying, I think of cowards picking on the weak. I am sure that is far too simplistic an explanation and puts four defined corners on a situation. After all, if a person has a particular issue with another person, why wouldn t you just pick up the phone and rationally discuss the situation? But far too often this year, we have seen social media postings publically dragging an issue into the open. Absent a conviction or confession, how can someone call another person, via social media, a thief or a liar! I am certainly not an expert on the nuances of social media and cyber bullying. But what I do know is that the West Highland White Terrier Club of America is one of the most respected breed clubs in our country. Of course we are not without our hiccups, but other clubs applaud the vast number of events that we sponsor for our membership, our organizational talents, and the dedication of our club members and its board. When inappropriate social media postings defame one of our members, it taints our integrity. It makes the club, as a whole, less desirable. And that deeply offends me and my fellow Board members. To address this situation, The Board has renamed the Rules Committee to the Rules and Ethics Committee. This committee is tasked with the constant review and editing of the Show Rules and Performance and Companion Event Rules. It is also now tasked with addressing member complaints rising from alleged violations of our Code of Ethics. Based on its review of a situation, it may make a recommendation to the Board for appropriate sanctions, depending on the gravity of the offense. Sanctions could include anything from a reprimand to suspension or expulsion via a formal complaint. Our Code of Ethics will be amended to prohibit obvious or apparent demeaning language published in the context of a social media posting or specifically directed toward another club member.

3 DELEGATE REPORT The winter Delegate meeting was held in Orlando on December 14 and 15. Committee meetings filled the first day, with the formal delegate meeting on Friday. AKC DELEGATE REPORT The Government Relations Department has had an active year, tracking over 2000 bills in Congress and the 50 state legislatures. Their mission is to combat legislation detrimental to dogs and breeders, by issuing legislative alerts. Over 115 alerts were issued in 2017, many of which were forwarded to our members for local action. The work of the Government Relations department is funded through the AKC Political Action Committee, AKCPAC. The Club, as well as local Clubs, is forbidden by law from contributing to this or any other PAC, but individuals may support AKCPAC through contributions in any amount. The AKC PAC collects voluntary contributions from individuals and uses these donations to support candidates who defend dog owners' rights and can effectively influence legislation impacting animal owners. Your donation will be pooled with contributions from AKC club members across the country to strengthen our support for reasonable, enforceable laws that protect the health and welfare of purebred dogs and do not restrict the rights of breeders and owners who take their responsibilities seriously. Go to www.apps.akc.org//apps/pac Initiatives reported earlier to allow spayed/neutered animals to compete in conformation events under certain circumstances are being opposed by the Government Relations and the AKC Board: 1. One of the fundamental arguments that AKC has used successfully against proposed government-mandated spay/neuter (MSN) laws is that dogs must be intact to participate in dog shows. Allowing dogs that are incapable of breeding to participate in conformation dog shows undermines AKC s credibility on this issue, and forfeits a major argument against mandatory spay-neuter laws. 2. While fanciers understand the nuances between dogs (a champion of record prior to neutering, a well-known stud dog, etc.) the distinction means little to the average person or anyone seeking to use a change in our policy to undermine AKC s position regarding MSN laws. 3. The argument has been made that animal rights extremists will not accept our position anyway. This is likely true. Thankfully, however, the vast majority of people we need to educate whether legislators or the public are not extremists, but reasonable people who care about animals. 4. AKC has long stated that conformation dog shows are about judging breeding stock. Undermining the breeding stock aspect of purebred dog shows means we may also lose one of the best opportunities we have for educating the general public about purebred dog breeding and responsible breeders, providing the opportunity for the public to actually meet intact animals and responsible dog breeders in their own communities, and proactively off-setting anti-breeder messaging. 5. Altered dogs are currently allowed to participate in the veteran s classes at independent specialty shows, and there is there is no limit to the number of

veteran classes an independent specialty may offer, thereby providing multiple opportunities for veterans to be showcased and compete. 4 The canne influenza outbreak during the summer and fall have hurt entries in many AKC events. Overall the entries through October 2017 declined 38,000 or 1.3%; part of this depreciation is due to Canine Influenza. All-Breed has declined by 3% or 35,000; Specialty has declined nearly 1.6% or 2200. Obedience is down 4.3% or 4800 entries. Agility is down 1.4% or 14,700 entries. On a positive note: Coursing Ability Tests are up 450 entries and Fast Cat is gaining momentum with over 12,000 entries in the first 10 months of 2017. Beginner Puppy entries are up 9% or 844 entries. Herding Test are up almost 1700 entries. Since launching in September, the new Scent Work has had more than 5000 entries. Financially, as of November 30 th:, Revenues: $65,380; Expenses: $60,414; Operating Income: $4,866. Registrations for both litters and dogs continued growth at 7%. Investment Performance for 11 months with investment gains $11million; investment return 10.9%. As your Delegate, I stand ready to be your spokesman and ombudsman to AKC. Please let me help whenever I can in clarifying or appealing an issue with AKC. Our Specialty is the FRIDAY after the Roving and an opportunity to get 3 more Majors, Plus 2 more sweepstakes over this weekend. Our Sweepstakes judges both have had much hands on experience with Westies & Westie Puppies. and our regular class judges are basically an unknown factor, so this should be very interesting!! Friday Sweeps: Allison Platt (Kirkton) Allison is a breeder, exhibitor in conformation and performance. She has had numerous Champions, Specialty winners and is a past President of the WHWTCA \ Friday Regular Classes: Clifford Shultz Has only judged Westies a few times so it's anyone's guess... Saturday Sweeps: Chris Steele (Cliff is his brother) Is second generation dog man, his father was a professional handler (primarily boxers I think). Chris showed Westies professionally In the 1980s & 1990s very successfully. He not only finished numerous Westies for his clients, but also won many Specialties and Groups with his charges. Under his Whiterose prefix he bred some Westie litters of his own. Chris left the Handling profession in order to spend more time with his young family. He now is planning on applying to the AKC to become a judge and this sweeps will be his first step toward that goal. Saturday Regular classes: Elizabeth Muthard She is an All Breeds judge, but has not judges Westies recently. Sunday: The judge is Tod Clyde, who was brought up with Westies among the other numerous Terrier Breeds his father Bob Clyde showed. Many Westies were groomed and boarded at his family's kennel and Tod along with his brothers were the kennel help. Thursday is set-up day with an All Terrier Match in the evening. The judge is Beth Wilder Wilson If anyone needs crates, tables, X-pens etc. Contact Fred Askin (410)435-7804 E-mail: faskin@jhmi.edu or Helene Weiss (410)969-7094 E-mail weistie@aol.com We will again be having our FABULOUS LUNCH and our after judging Wine and Cheese Party. Our dinner this year will be at a new venue, an authentic Irish Pub the menu is below.

William Penn WHWTC Specialty will be May 5th in conjunction with the Bucks County Kennel Club. Regular Class Judge is William devillenueve and Sweeps judge will be Naomi Brown. 16

Sweepstakes and Veterans judge will be Joan Murko; * Mr. Harry O'Donoghue from Ireland will be judging the regular classes at our Specialty Show on May 6, 2018 in conjunction with Trenton Kennel Club. We also have a Supported entry in conjunction with Garden State All Terrier Club on May 4, 2018 at the same location. The Sweepstakes judge will be Anne Van Walleghem. The West Highland White Terrier Club of Northern IL celebrates our 50 th anniversary. Our show will be dedicated to the memory of long time member, Cookie Pajak who passed away in December. Join us at our Specialty on Saturday, June 17, 2018 at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake, IL (suburb of Chicago). Our regular classes will be judged by Dr. Jerry Klein. Sweepstakes will be judged by Jane Kays. Our trophies will feature a westie design created for our anniversary by Deborah Colvin Borgo. Saturday evening will feature our Specialty dinner, which is always a popular event with good food and company. Our host hotel is the Baymont Inn in Mundelien where we have negotiated a special rate. This show is part of a 5 day cluster with supported entries on Friday and Sunday. Sweeps will also be offered on Sunday, judged by Nick Waters. Regular class judges for the other days: Wednesday - Thursday TBD Friday - Mr. R C Williams Sunday - Mr. James A Moses A message from the West Highland White Terrier Club of Northern Ohio.. Oh, yes she did! Sonja Harris has made a second westie Christmas tree skirt. Sorta by popular demand. After so many people were disappointed not to win the beautiful tree skirt we displayed at Canfield and Kimberton in 2017, Sonja agreed to make another for a fund raiser this year too. I m not sure how long she will keep this up, so be sure to get tickets this year. Again, the drawing will be in October, so there s plenty of time, but don t forget. You can bet we ll be reminding you. And we ll have it at Canfield and Kimberton. Chances will be $5 each, or six for $25.

18 Last year our club started supported entries with a Labor Day cluster in addition to our specialty cluster in August, and this year we are adding another two days at shows the weekend before Canfield, in Marion, Ohio. We ll offer prizes leftover from past years, and perhaps get a few dollars back, but the important thing is the support really. Paying it back, or paying it forward, to keep dog shows alive. During January a couple from our club died within weeks of each other and we were entrusted in the placement of their Westie as no one in their family wanted to add a dog to the household. She s happily settled now with a couple and a Westie mix sister. Think about where YOUR dogs would go in that situation, and talk with friends and family about it. We have a few signed first edition copies of Tucker Digs Easter for sale. Maybe you have a child in your life who would like a picture book about Tucker the Westie helping the Easter bunny hide eggs. Or really, maybe you should have it on your own bookshelf. The price is $10 plus postage. Contact me at fairisle@twc.com if you re interested. There are new dinnerware pieces coming this year. Better think about your entries for August to get em. We re counting on warmer weather to arrive by planning our summer specialty the first weekend in August. You may have heard plans are underway for a LARGE air conditioned arena at Canfield, but that won t be finished for 2018. So come along for a last old fashioned Canfield. The cluster has decided to repeat Christmas at Canfield and we ll need some more decorations for our building. As you re getting out things this month and find something you don t to wish to keep, put it aside to bring along next summer. We have some great sweepstakes judges slated for 2018. Possibly someone you ve never showed to before. Diane Orange and Pat Logan-Hale. And two new pieces for your collection of our exclusive dinnerware will be part of the trophies. Come and see. Chris Schriber

Our NY Specialty show will be held on September 9 th, 2018 in conjunction with the Westchester Kennel Club at North Branch Park in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The Judge is Dennis McCoy and the Westminster Kennel Club has this to say about him; DENNIS McCOY of APEX, NORTH CAROLINA enjoyed a robust career as a professional handler that included handling numerous all-breed and specialty best in show winners, the top-winning Poodle, and the top-winning Dalmatian in breed history. Mr. McCoy won seven groups at Westminster, including five consecutive Non-Sporting groups from 1996 to 2000, and was Best in Show at Westminster in 1991 with Standard Poodle, Ch. Whisperwind. Mr. McCoy retired from handling and began his judging career in 2000, and currently judges the Toy, Non-Sporting, and Terrier groups, and best in show. He has judged numerous assignments in foreign countries, and he judged the Toy group at Westminster in 2013. In 2018 it will be his fourth judging assignment at Westminster. We are happy to have him judge our NY Specialty. In addition to this, our Sweeps Judge for our Specialty will be announced at a later date. Stay tuned for more information regarding our Match Show (held in April) and other events. The NY Club will also be attending Meet the Breeds, February 10 th, 2018, at Piers 90 and 91 in Manhattan. This is a great event and I urge other West Highland Clubs to join us. It s a tremendous opportunity to impart the knowledge we ve gained from being an owner, breeder, handler of Westies to the general public. We also will take part in The Tartan Day Parade. The New York Tartan Day Parade is usually held the Saturday nearest Tartan Day. The 2018 20th Annual New York Tartan Day Parade will be held on April 7th. Watch and cheer us on or join us with your Scottish dogs as the New York Tartan Day Parade moves up 6th Avenue. Last but not least, there is another event we love to attend and it s The Scottish Games. Will keep you posted on that one too. Come one, come all! Come for a day of fun! 19
