St Margaret College Half Yearly Examinations 2015 Year 6 English Listening Comprehension Time: 30 mins Teacher s Paper Task 1 Look at the exercises for Task One. (Allow a 15 second pause while students familiarise themselves with the task) Listen carefully. You will hear the reading twice. Listen to the following texts on interesting places in London. You may start underlining the correct word or phrase as you listen. The London Eye at a height of 135 metres is the biggest Ferris wheel in Europe. It is the most popular tourist attraction in the UK. Over three million people visit it in one year. The London Eye is located on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. The wheel has 32 passenger capsules. Each capsule can carry 25 people. Each ride takes 30 minutes. If you want to take an aerial view of London, then this is the place to go. The Wheel moves very slowly, so it's comfortable to ride in. The London Eye was formally opened by the Prime Minister Tony Blair on 31 st December 1999, although it was not opened to the public until March 2000 because of technical problems. On the 5 th of June 2008 it was announced that 30 million people have ridden the London Eye since its opening in March 2000. Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum in London that opened its doors over 200 years ago. It was set up by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud. Marie was born in France but travelled to London in 1802. Madame Tussaud's wax museum has now grown to become a major tourist attraction in London. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars and famous murderers. All of the waxworks are life-size, and posed to look as real as possible. You can have your photo taken in an audience with the Queen, for example, or take a penalty with David Beckham. Another relatively new feature to attract tourists is The Spirit of London. You sit into black London cabs and drive through about 600 years of London history. Listen to the sentences and underline the correct word or phrase in the brackets as you listen. people and accompany them. People of distant places were so happy to have a conversation with their king and they were proud that their king had such a good heart! After several weeks, he returned to the palace. He was quite happy that he visited many pilgrim centres and could see his fellow people leading a prosperous life. However, he had one regret. He had intolerable pain in his feet as it was his first trip on foot over a long distance. He complained to his ministers that the roads weren t comfortable and were very stony. He could not tolerate the pain as he walked all the way through the rough path. He said he was very worried about the people who had to walk along those roads as it would be painful for them too! He immediately gave the order to have the roads of the whole country covered with leather so that people might feel comfortable. The king thought that he had to change this for the betterment and happiness of the people. His ministers were stunned to hear his order as it would destroy the life of thousands of cows to get the sufficient quantity of leather and it would also cost a huge amount of money. A wise man from the ministry came to the king and said that he had another idea. The king was curious about this alternative idea. The wise man asked, Why do you want to kill so many cows to cover the road with leather when you can just have a piece of leather cut in an appropriate shape to cover your feet? The king was very surprised by his suggestion and applauded the wise man. He ordered a pair of leather shoes to be made for him and requested all his countrymen to wear shoes.
