PAW PRINTS Humane Society of Jefferson County SUMMER 2012 FANTASTIC NEWS SHELTER 865-475-8930 Inside this issue: Happy Tails 2 Donation Boxes 2 Build cont. 3 PALs 3 Outreach 3 Happy Tails cont. 3 Thanks to the Animal Rescue Site, the Petfinder.com Foundation, and Rescue U May was such an astounding month that most of this issue is going to be devoted to 2 of the most awesome weeks that the Humane Society has ever experienced. Volunteers have made an amazing difference at the shelter. Materials and labor were provided at no cost to the Humane Society. Beginning May 19th a great renewal and build started at the shelter. It all began when the back hoe appeared and started the site preparation for a stand alone cattery. Once the site was leveled on the left of the shelter, it was grav- eled and a form was built and the concrete foundation laid. Dr. Bryna Donnely of Rescue U, and Doug Woolsey Petfinder.com Foundation Program Manager arrived on Monday the 20th to oversee the total operation. A construction crew began work Tuesday the 21st and within days the cat house was framed in, roofed and continued on p.3 Editor: Jeanne Weber Ringe President, HSJC CHECK US OUT! Page 2 HAPPY TAILS No newsletter would be complete without some stories highlighting our successes. Three exciting saves are Aggie (rottweiler), Drake (great dane) and Miracle (kitten) They survived being left in a foreclosed house without food and water. Drake and Aggie recovered well and put on weight but Drake was left with separation anxiety and wasn t going to be easy to place. A stressed Great Dane can cause a lot of damage! But our shelter manager, Melissa, fell in love with Drake and he has found his forever home. Aggie though emotionally stable had a collapsed trachea which caused her discomfort particularly when stressed. Thanks to publicity by volunteers at the build a great home was found for her and she got to go on a transport north to a fantastic home where they would be understanding of her health issue. And then there was Miracle the kitten too small and starved to live but he did! Careful nursing and care turned him into a healthy, play- MIRACLE ful kitten who was adopted and got a great home. PAW PRINTS D R A K E AGGIE Can you see his Friend? DONATION BOXES LOOK FAMILIAR? I HOPE SO!! The donation boxes that you see everywhere are very important. When you see one, drop in a bit of change (or more) and thank the business for allowing us to have a box at their locale. We use the money to assist with rescue transport and to offer assistance with spay/neuter. From January through June 2012 we have gotten 354 dogs into rescue. A lot of these dogs went by transports to Pennsylvania. In May, 10 dogs, which included Sally a new momma (and her 10 puppies) a total of 20 dogs accompanied one of our board members who was heading to NJ and were dropped off at 3 different rescue sites. If you are looking for a way to volunteer and are traveling north you might consider trans- porting some of our pups. Sally is very happy about her chance for a new life!.
SUMMER BUILD CONTINUED Prevent A Litter We provide space for the Prevent A Litter (PALS) mobile clinic monthly to provide low cost spay/neuter services to our community. Please spread the word to your PALS REMINDER shingled. While the cattery was being constructed other volunteer groups were installing 2 spacious chain link exercise areas for dogs and another group was installing several chain link meet and greet areas for potential adopters to interact with dogs they were interested in adopting. Meanwhile the old cat room was converted to a kitten play area where potential adopters could interact with the kittens. This was a lot of activity!! Of course there was lots of painting being done and a marvelous puppy mural was designed and painted to decorate the wall. The cat house even has outdoor chain link play areas for exercise. It is expected that the extreme renovations will help our cats stay healthier and therefore be more adoptable. Many local volunteers stepped up to make friends and neighbors about this valuable service. Spay and neuter saves lives, dollars, and heartbreak. There are simply not enough homes for all the animals in our community. Call the shelter to make an appointment and check out the the visitors feel at home and welcome. They were exposed to southern hospitality at it s finest and were fed well!! Every time we looked someone was dropping off food offerings, which was much appreciated by the workers. They never lacked for water, lunches, snacks, dinner or desserts. We look forward to introducing our newly renovated facility to the community this fall. We are determined to not just rest on what cost. PALS is usually at the shelter 3 times a month which indicates how successful the program is. We do have some funds available for those needing assistance to spay or neuter their pets. Page 3 has been accomplished but to continue to improve our facility and the way we care for our animals. We are hard at work cleaning up the area, disposing of clutter and organizing our storage unit. There is still some painting to be done. An addition is going to be built onto the laundry room to allow easier management of the vast amount of bedding that must be laundered daily. And we will be adding a room off the back to better manage feral cats. In just 3 months (April- June) PALs altered 242 pets. It has been kitten season with many babies taken in in June. So please spread the word about affordable spay neuter and let s see if we can make a noticeable reduction in our kitten intake. OUTREACH Don t forget we have a speaker available to present a program on the humane society and the importance of caring properly for pets. MORE HAPPY TAILS I couldn t omit Kujo a 13 year old poodle who is thriving in her new home and playful as a puppy. And another poodle, Pepper, now Sir Spanky also a miniature, matted, dirty and covered in sores who we weren t sure we could save but after spending 3 hours being groomed (thank you Helene who loves a challenge) and scrubbed was adopted, treated at the vets and loves being part of a family and playing with his new poodle friends! Even a 13 old schnauzer mix, Sally, is thriving in her new home SIR SPANKY Give the old ones a chance!
