Subscriptions by members of BFCA are paid as a portion of annual membership dues.

President s Message Judy McNamara Welcome to fall. Wild weather so far. Hurricane Matthew has the whole southeast coast in a mess. In this month s issue, be sure to check out the judges nomination ballots. There is a list of people who do not wish to judge. The ballots will also be sent electronically. Also, there is a form to sign up for the breeder s directory. Now is the time to consider if you would like to be an officer or director of BFCA. There is a form to fill out if you wish to volunteer to serve your club. The specialty is in Atlanta May 4-5, 2017. Our hotel is the Sheraton Atlanta Airport, 1900 Sullivan Rd., 770-994-2510. There is a free airport pickup. We will be offering the 4-6 puppy class and it will be judged by our own Ann Hearn, so be thinking about what you will bring to show Ann. Regular classes will be judged by Mimi Winkler. Atlanta is a very easy airport to get to so I hope we will have many beautiful fluffs to enjoy at the show. We are now in prime show season, so I hope you all have many winners ribbons to bring home. Page 3 B I CHON FRI SE CLUB OF A ME RI CA

Committee Reports Rescue, Zandra Kern BICHON FRISE CLUB OF AMERICA CHARITABLE TRUST Not for profit 501C3 Our Bichon Bash was a great success. It was held on Sunday, September 11 at Bull Run Park in Centreville, VA. We received over $11,500 in Bash donations. The Bash only had one expense which is the Bull Run Park Site. Everything else was donated. This year we asked our vets to give seminars. We had educational seminars on cataracts, supplements for orthopedic care, vaccines, canine massage with demonstration, grooming demonstration and agility. September 11 was a beautiful day and everyone and every Bichon had a great time. We sent out a newsletter asking for more fosters. We added 4 more fosters to our list. This past quarter has been slow for Bichons coming into rescue. However, when they do come it s all at once. WHAT QUALITIES ARE DESIRABLE IN A NATIONAL SPECIALTY JUDGE? The balloting begins with this issue of the BULLETIN to select judges. We expect many visitors to attend our specialty and we need to provide judges who are especially knowledgeable about our breed. You are urged to take special care in your nominations. ********************************************************************************************************** To assist you in making your nominations, the Board offers the following suggestions on what to look for in a specialty judge. Most of these criteria are obvious, but a reminder never hurts. 1. The primary requirement is a thorough knowledge of the breed standard. This goes beyond being able to quote from the standard. The judge should have proven his/her understanding by consistent placement of quality dogs. Do I understand the selections, even when my dog is not the winner? 2. The chosen judges should be able to sort out large classes efficiently and quickly while giving each entry equal time. A specialty is not the time to have to tediously work out who is to be third place and who is to be fourth place. Consider the following: a. Am I frustrated and bored watching this judge make decisions? b. Does this judge tend to run behind schedule? 3. Has this judge had enough experience in Judging Bichons for me to know the answers to the questions above? 4. To further sort through a list of capable judges, you may look to the finer points of judging to help you decide who makes our list of nominees. You will need to focus on what seems to be of important to this judge, regardless of the breed being considered. a. Does this judge look first for showmanship? Type? Movement? Overall soundness? Males over females or vice-versa? b. Other than personal disappointments, have I generally agreed with the final selections? c. If your nominee is from another country, do his decisions reflect the American standard - or have you observed his judging enough to know the answers to these questions? Now you should be able to make your nominations. These same criteria will apply in each stage of judge selection. May the best judge(s) emerge by the end of the balloting.
