B J C S A 6.1 What is needed for a dog to go safely outside? 6.2 What do you need outside for shelter? 6.3 What will help you identify your dog? 6.4 What will you need to walk your dog? 6.5 Where will your dog sleep at night? J C S A All puppies are very, very cute. But puppies grow up into dogs (and some small puppies grow up to be large dogs). Everyone (children & adults) need to remember the important lesson that a dog is for life! A puppy you might choose may live from 8 years to over 20 years. Pick a dog breed. Please do the math for a dog s life expectancy. That means if you got a new puppy, of this dog breed right now, you would be caring for this dog/puppy until you are this age. How old are you now? How long does this dog live? Add the numbers together. J C S A 8.1 Pick a dog breed. Learn & list a few health concerns for this dog breed. 8.2 Dogs need people to keep them safe from dangerous items. List something in your garage that would be dangerous for a dog. List something in your kitchen or bathroom dangerous for a dog. List a food (for people) that could be dangerous for a dog. S A Visit www.akc.org to learn more about on canine careers. You know dogs are man s best friend, but did you know there is an upward trend of people spending more money on their dogs. That means dog careers are on the rise; from a Dog Walker to a Dog Specialist (like a Dog Masseuse or Physical Therapist, or Dog Behaviorist), or perhaps a Vet Technician or Veterinarian. Canine Career Dog Walker: Speak to a dog walker you know or Education Required Salary (hourly, per dog, per event, or annually.) General Duties Dog Sitter: Speak to a dog sitter you know or Dog Groomer: Speak to a dog groomer you know or Dog Trainer: Speak to a dog trainer you know or Vet Technician: Speak to a vet technician you know, call your vet or Veterinarian: Speak to a veterinarian you know or Dog Show Handler: Interview a professional Dog Handler (in person, by phone or by email). A Police K9 Dog Search & Rescue Tracking Dog Military, Narcotics or Bomb Dog Service Dog Sheep or Cattle Ranching Dog Most often, German Shepherd Dogs are used as a Police K9 (others include Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Bloodhounds or the Belgian Malinois.) Typically this would be a Bloodhound or German Shepherd Dog (but other breeds are used as well.) Often a German Shepherd Dog or Belgian Malinois but sometimes Labrador Retrievers, Beagles and other breeds are used in addition. Classically, most are Golden Retrievers or Labradors Retrievers. Generally speaking, you want an intelligent, focused dog for service use.) Some mixed breed dogs are used as well. High on the list of most ranchers are Australian Cattle Dogs & Border Collies (but most any dog from the Herding Group would work.) 12.1 Pick a Dog Job to investigate & then locate a dog that does this Job. What is the dog s job? Who is the dog? Where does the dog work? What breed of dog is it? Was it chosen because of its breed? 12.2 List some of the dog s special breed qualities. 12.3 List some of the dog s regular duties. 12.4 How was the dog trained for his job?
