The theory is that in 17th century England, sanitation was not a priority. Debris, including trash and the occasional body of a deceased animal accumulated in the streets until a strong rainstorm came through. The rush of water would carry the bodies through the city and an observer might suppose they had fallen from the sky. Thus the phrase, raining cats and dogs. WHERE DID THAT COME FROM??? A three-dog night? This idiom refers to the practice of WAYS YOU CAN HELP! If it was particularly cold, they might need three dogs to keep them warm, thus a three-dog night. Barking up the wrong tree referred to hunting dogs who chased quarry so their human companions could find them. Often the dogs would pick up a scent that led them away from the quarry where they would bark up an empty tree. Thus if you approach something in the wrong manner, you re said to be barking up the wrong tree.

FACT: Cats kiss with their eyes. Cats communicate with a slow blink. It s a peace sign meant to put other cats at ease. Aimed at a human, it shows affection, even love. MYTH: Licking heals a dog s wounds. There is no magic healing power in dog saliva. Quite the opposite. Bacteria in a dog s mouth may cause an infection that delays healing. Dogs are prone to compulsive licking called acral lick dermatitis which creates sores which are hard to heal. FACT: Smoking kills cats and dogs. Secondhand smoke causes at least two fatal cancers in cats; lymphoma and oral carcinoma. They may get a double dose by breathing in smoke in the air and by licking the residue off their fur when grooming. Dogs with long noses may develop cancerous nasal tumors and, dogs with short noses, are more prone to lung cancer. FACT: Dogs can smile. Relaxed and open, it can be a sign of a happy dog. A submissive grin is a canine version of our nervous smile. Dogs pull their lips up, show their front teeth and may crouch. This harmless, nervous grin can be easily confused with an aggressive snarl. Volume 4, Issue 4 BE KIND...ADOPT A PET Adopting pets from a rescue or shelter can save the lives of animals that might be facing euthanasia because homes can t be found for them. The pets boarded in your neighborhood rescue or shelter don t necessarily have behavioral issues. Many of these animals are loving pets in need of good homes because their owners could no longer take care of them or because their owner has passed away. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence. When you adopt a pet, you are giving that pet a second chance. So, before you buy a new puppy or kitten, consider adopting from your local rescue or shelter. You ll be giving a home to a pet that desperately needs one, and you can feel good knowing that you saved the life of a loving new friend.
