New AKC Title for Therapy Dogs During the BOD meeting in May, the AKC Board reviewed a staff proposal for an AKC Therapy Dog title (THD). There was no Board objection and AKC will implement the following programs: AKC will issue a Therapy Dog title (THD) to purebred and mixed-breed dogs that are registered/listed with the AKC and meet the following criteria: (1) have been certified by a partici- pating therapy dog certification organizations and, (2) have performed a minimum of 50 community service visits as a therapy dog. This would be a suffix title. The title would be issued at the request of the owner who would fill out a title application form and submit documentation that the dog has met the criteria. There would be a fee of $20 for the issuance of the title. The AKC Therapy Dog title will also function as an advanced level of Canine Good Citizen, by providing an activity in which the dog will perform the skills on the CGC test in a therapy setting. The program will be launched June 27, 2011. For more information on this new title see details on the AKC website. http://www.akc.org/akctherapydog/ CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) Numbers issued during the 2nd Quarter of 2011 KAMARAJ BIJA AIDA, CHIC #72331 HP15731901, issued 4/11/2011, Owned by Margaret Worth NEFER-TEMU ROYALE SAPPHIRE SAMBA, CHIC#73045 HP33200205, issued 5/25/2011, Owned by Michelle Carrillo and Emily Kerridge Announcements PHCA National/Western Specialties 2012 MARK YOUR CALENDARS Will be held in conjunction with Lake Matthews KC at Prado Park, Chino, California, April 27, 28 and 29, 2012. PHCA 2011 COMMITTEES Rescue Chairman: Pam Haig Members: Bonnie Folz, Marie Henke, Sheila Hoffman, Darci Kunard, Laurie Laventhall and Robert Newman. The primary responsibilities of the rescue committee are to locate and follow up on reports of any purebred Pharaoh Hound that might find itself displaced or in trouble. Once a report on such a dog is received, the committee shall make arrangements to obtain a definite ID of the dog to insure it is in fact a purebred Pharaoh. If a determination is made that the dog is a Pharaoh, then arrangements will be made through the committee and PHCA members, as required to get the dog picked up and transported to a suitable foster home until a permanent solution can be determined. The committee shall assist in locating potential adoptive homes and make sure these dogs receive a permanent microchip implantation prior to placement in a new home. The committee is also responsible for following up on these placements and being available to mentor the new owners, or provide the new owner with the name of a PHCA member in their area who can help with questions/problems. Health Chairman: Stephen Sipperly Members: Carmen Davis, Julie Gwin and Dr. Thom Haig, DVM Develop and distribute the PHCA health survey to club members every 2-3 years. Evaluate results of previous surveys; identify health areas in need of further research for the breed. Field inquiries from members of the PHCA about health concerns and categorize any articles sent from members about the health concerns. Provide support and articles (on health-related issues affecting Pharaoh Hounds) in each issue of the Scribe for the Health Issues Page. Health committee members, or the general membership, may write articles, but all articles need to be reviewed by the entire health committee prior to publication for content and correctness. Aid in evaluating any research studies which may benefit the health of the Pharaoh hound, and present information to the general membership in the Scribe or a separate mailing (depending on the timelines of the study). Education: Chairman: Rita Sacks Members: Pam Haig, Marie Henke, Sheila Hoffman, Laurie Laventhall, Libby Leone Committee was established in order to educate judges, aspiring judges, PHCA members and the general public. The original Committee formulated first the "PHCA Breed Brochure" and later "The Pharaoh Hound Illustrated Guide". Most of the present Committee put together the scripted slide show presentation that is currently being used for official PHCA approved judges seminars. The purpose of the Committee is to expose as many judges as possible to our presentation. Wherever possible, a Committee member will be a presenter for the host club and if that is not possible, the Chair will select a PHCA member to be a presenter with the approval of the rest of the Committee. It has been difficult to add to the Committee because of the high requirements necessary to meet the responsibility. Very few PHCA members, at this time, have enough experience, knowledge and impartiality to work on a committee that can actually help determine the direction of the breed. It requires someone with a minimum of 15 years, preferably 20, of Pharaoh Hound experience. Someone who has bred, without an outside co-breeder, at least four generations of champions. Also someone who is not heavily campaigning a Specials. This is hard come by, but it is what is needed. The committee members are considered Mentors for the breed and judges have begun to call these Mentors in order to get more breed information and to discuss questions regarding the standard. These consultations in no way replace attending a Breed Seminar, but they often serve to clarify any questionable issues that the judges may have regarding the Standard. Breeder Referral: Chairperson - Rita Laventhall Sacks Committee administers and distributes the PHCA Approved Breeders List. Breeders that are members in good standing with the PHCA should contact Mrs. Sacks for inclusion in the approved breeders list. You must adhere to the PHCA Code of Ethics in your breeding practices, permanently identify all puppies before they leave your home, and provide the rescue committee (Ms. Haig) with the identification numbers for each puppy you produce. Ways & Means: Chairman: Sheila Hoffman Member: Carmen Davis This committee is responsible for recommending items for resale in order to add proceeds for PHCA operation expenses. The committee is also responsible for the sale of these items and financial tracking of these transactions. Awards: Chairman: Sheila Hoffman Members: PHCA board of directors This committee evaluates the qualifications for the PHCA Awards and administration of the annual awards. PHCA Web Site: Chairman: Carmen Davis Members: Cynthia Guinn, Jane Hodnett Propose web content to the PHCA Board and maintain the site.

PHCA 2011 COMMITTEES P A G E 6 Code of Ethics: Chairman: Rita Sacks Members: Pam Haig This committee was established in order to formulate a Code of Ethics for the PHCA and makes any update recommendation to the PHCA board of directors. Challenge & Perpetual Trophy Coordinator: Stephen Sipperly 2004 board-appointed position to keep track of possession of sponsored trophies and club trophies and assist in coordination for deliver to the next specialty. Membership: Chairman: Jane Hodnett Members: current PHCA recording secretary The goal of the membership committee is to identify areas that may be capitalized on to attract interest in PHCA membership. The committee is also involved in recognizing Pharaoh Hounds that are active in service and performance areas and offer encouragement and support to their handlers for their efforts. Current agenda: 1. Draft letter to mail to individuals that are active in other areas of dog activities: therapy, obedience, agility, coursing, fly ball, tracking, etc. 2. Working in conjunction with the Website Committee on adding different areas to the PHCA website which would be more beneficial to members as well as non-members. By-laws: Members: Pam Haig, Sheila Hoffman, Robert Newman This committee reviews and recommends updates on the by-laws to the PHCA Board of Directors as needed.

From the Cover: DC Kamaraj Al-Dabaran, FCh, ROM DC Kamaraj Al-Dabaran, FCh, ROM was owned and bred by Marilyn Smith at Kamaraj kennels in New Hampshire. Marilyn has been actively involved in Pharaoh Hounds since 1975. Baran was by CH Merymet Achiles, ROM and out of CH Kamaraj Mejju Neves. Baran was a show dog from 11/24/85 thru 10/11/92. He finished his AKC Championship from the puppy dogs class and had his first Best of Breed win under Judge Mrs. G. Wanner from the puppy dog class. Marilyn had the pleasure of getting his first Group placement, 3rd, under Judge Mr R.Ward. She realized that was about all she could do on her own so enlisted the help of professional handler, Fred Olson. Fred and Baran were together for three year and were a great team. During his show career he accumulated-- 10 group 1 s, 20 group 2 s, 32 group 3 s, 23 group 4 s. This was a great accomplishment for the new "kid" or Breed in the Hound Group ring. Baran was the Pedigree Dog of the year in 1987 and 1989. He was number one All-Systems for most of his show days. Baran started Lure coursing after he retired from the show ring at age six. He became an ASFA field champion in April 1991 with a Best In Field and in November 1991 became an AKC Field Champion. Making him the 1st AKC Bench Champion to be an AKC Field Champion. This phase of his adventures was shortened because of a tumor on his front leg which eventually took him from me, despite surgery and chemo. Baran only was bred four times. One litter whelped July,1988 to Kamaraj Alaxandria Roo resulting in 4 males and 1 female. They went on the become Breed and Coursing Champions as well as an Agility Champion. On 9/14/93 Ch Kamaraj Flutterby whelped 4 Males and 2 Females with Baran as the sire. They also earned show and coursing titles including National Specialty Owner Handler winner, Ch Kamaraj Lukor's Karnak. Flutterby was also an Owner Handled National Specialty winner herself. I have truly been blessed with a Pharaoh Hound dog who accomplished everything I asked of him.

P A G E 8 DC Kamaraj Al-Dabaran, FCh, ROM He was also bred to Ch Beltara's Dark Temptation (whelped 9/12/87) and to CH Sakkara's Tirzah of Auten (whelped 11/8/88). Even though he was bred limited times, Baran qualified for his ROM with at least 14 AKC bench champions (5 of which were Dual CH), 6 field champions, two LCM s, one CD, a USDAA agility champion plus some offspring with CGC s and TT s. He was easy going with a sweet temperament. He lived to carry his stuffed bunny around the show sites. Baran was not only a "star" at home but also he co-starred in a video with Rex Trailer. And had a prominent part in the AKC video for the Pharaoh Hound. From Marilyn, Most people will understand when I say in the lifetime of breeding one can only expect a few outstanding puppies to come out of even the best laid plans. I have been truly blessed with a Pharaoh Hound dog who accomplished everything I asked of him. He was a dream to live with and passed these qualities on to his puppies in the show ring, on the coursing field, the obedience ring and the agility course. If it sounds like I am proud of my boy, I am. He was a joy to live with, to show and I still miss him. Thank you for this opportunity to remember a very wonderful time in my life. Marilyn M Smith, Kamaraj Pharaoh Hounds since 1975

During the same time frame, there were 4 CD titles earned. Big news for Pharaoh Hounds at the time was that Ellen DeWolf and her Pharaoh CH Kamarah Pa-Ser Ramzakh, CD competed in the Eastern Gaines Regional for obedience. Pa-Ser was the first Pharaoh Hound to qualify for this competition. In 1990, we had 24 ASFA Field Champions, 5 ASFA LCMs and one ASFA LCM3. Highest Scoring Pharaoh Hound in obedience was Rohan s Radar of the March, CD owned by Marcia Cavan & James Salois. Kiss of Allah Reprinted from the December 2000 AKC Gazette By Pharaoh Hound Gazette Columnist Rita Laventhall Sacks P A G E 1 0 Just as I felt secure that a particular Bete Noir of mine had been safely laid to rest, never to be heard from again, it sneaked out and shocked me out of my complacency. It reminded me that if you wait long enough, history will, unfortunately, repeat itself. It has been almost 15 years since I first wrote about the expressions Kiss of Allah and Touch of Allah when referring to the markings on a Pharaoh Hound. Someone had used the words Kiss of Allah to describe the small white marking on the center of the dog s skull. I strongly objected to the use of these expressions. Many breeders agreed with me, and within a short time, the expressions were no longer politically correct. The expression resurfaced recently at a dog show, when the breeder/owner proudly referred to the white marking on her Pharaoh Hound puppy s head as the beautiful Kiss of Allah. This may be a proper description of white markings on the heads of dogs of other breeds, but it appears nowhere in the Pharaoh Hound Standard, and its use does not serve our breed well. The Standard reads as follows, with regard to white on the head: Slim white snip on centerline of face permissible. The key word here is permissible. It is not desirable but only permissible. The small white spot, or teardrop, or slim line of white referred to by some as Touch or Kiss of Allah is neither desirable nor undesirable. It is simply permissible. To romanticize this feature by means of a charismatic expression is to actively, though subtly, promote the permissible to become the desirable, particularly in the eyes of the novice. It is just a short road to travel from the breeder who sells the dog with the Kiss of Allah as having greater show potential than those who have not, to the ignorant breeder who attempts to breed such dogs because they have become popular. Can t you almost hear, My dog has the Kiss of Allah. Does yours? We should keep in mind that white markings on the Pharaoh Hound head often accompany excessive white on the rest of the dog, such as too much white on the chest or white on toes creeping up to become socks. I have also seen it accompany flecking, which is undesirable. My advice to breeders who produce a lot of white in their Pharaoh Hounds is that they should avoid getting locked in to these variations of markings to the point where, over the passage of time, they consider anything else to be incorrect. (I suddenly realize I have described kennelblindness, a serious affliction.) We must keep to the Standard in every way possible, and not bend it to suit a particular dog or particular trait that has appeared. We must beware of romantic terminology, which sneaks in to corrupt the Standard and the breed.

Critique from the PHCA Western Regional Specialty By Helen Winski Stein It was a great pleasure to judge the Pharaoh Hound Club of America Western Regional Specialty on April 15, 2011. As a Sighthound breeder, I am looking for a balanced dog with the correct angles, lines and curves for his breed, with no exaggeration in structure or in movement. I want the impression of grace, power and speed in any Sighthound, and your standard calls for this as well. I want to see a Pharaoh Hound with long bladed bone, good balance and symmetry, a long Houndy head with large expressive properly set ears and sound easy movement. I was happy to see that the dogs entered at this specialty fit that description. The Pharaoh Hounds were presented in fit and athletic condition, and even the lovely Veterans were alert and eager to move around the ring. The Dog Classes were quite nice, and I awarded Winners Dog to the BBE Dog, who I thought appeared young but quite together. He had a lovely arch of neck and a beautiful, long expressive head with gorgeous ears. Quite fluid in movement and when he stopped after gaiting, he was very confident and primitive looking. Reserve Winners Dog (I now see from looking at the catalog) was his littermate from the 9-12 Puppy Dog class. Again a dog with beautiful type, sound moving and alert in expression. The WD was also Best of Winners. The class bitches were also very Houndy and elegant, very lovely girls. For Winners Bitch I selected the winner of the 9-12 Puppy class. This classy bitch has a lovely shape with long elegant neck, large beautiful ears and the intelligent expression of a Huntress. In the Winners class she carried herself beautifully in spite of the increasing heat of the day. She stood confidently on her own and moved with happy grace. (A littermate to WD and RWD? I think so). The Reserve Winners Bitch really was also quite competitive nicely balanced, pretty head, ears and eye, and very strong on the move. The five Veterans in their various classes were in great shape and it is gratifying to see that the shape and the look of your breed has not changed much since these Veterans were young. Your breeders seem for the most part to have stayed with the breed standard and rarely given in to exaggeration in shape and shortness of leg. The Best of Breed competition was a great class! There were many strong competitors who didn t receive awards wish I could have given more awards as there were several very nice ones left out of the ribbons. Best of Breed was a bitch who I felt had the proper elegant and strong balance, a lovely long arched neck and a beautiful head. Her large mobile ears were part of the beautiful breed type this bitch exhibited. Best Opposite Sex also was beautiful in type and movement, long neck, lovely head and ears. Both were strong athletic movers with great confidence and pride. I also awarded Select Dog, Select Bitch and one Award of Merit (WISH I could have had 3 AOMs to award!) to Pharaoh Hounds who in my opinion were noble, elegant animals with beautiful lines and proper balance. Thank you for inviting me judge this lovely specialty show. Helen Winski Stein
