Thorny bushes in work areas. Irritant and poisonous plants such as berries and fungi. Litter/fly tipping. Water bodies. Pond is temporary and seasonal and is very shallow Stings from bees, wasps or hornets. Who is affected? Public Typical outcome Bruises, sprains, minor cuts and grazes. Cuts and grazes. Infections. Puncture wounds, eye damage. Spores are carcinogenic. Poisoning from ingestion. Cuts, infections. Drowning. Allergic reaction to stings. Precautions Maintain path surface. Be aware of uneven surface when working on allotments. Provide safety glasses if working in thorny area. Do not work in bracken infested areas in July/August/September. Do not eat fungi, berries or other plant material. Wash hands after handling such material. Use gloves/litter-pickers when collecting rubbish and strong bags. Do not overfill. Contact staff if needles or syringes found, for advice on disposal in sharps containers. Access to water bodies to be discouraged. Pond in fenced enclosure Be aware of any nests close by and do not get too close. All volunteers / staff should declare any known allergic reactions. Toxocariasis (an infection of the round worm Toxocara canis). Young children are at particular risk due to their weaker immune systems and greater chance of exposure. Falling and Drowning. Weil s disease (Leptospirosis). Electrocution. Dehydration and sunburn. Blisters from a photosensitive skin reaction to plant phyto-toxins. Wear gloves if likely to come in contact with faeces. Wash hands before eating. Dogs discouraged from being taken to allotment area with signage. Agreed that allotment holders can take dogs but to closely supervise and remove any faeces. Keep cover on and locked. Check cover regularly Cover cuts and abrasions with water-proof dressing and wash hands after contact with water. If flu like symptoms develop within 3-19 days after contact with water visit doctor and inform of the possibility of Weils disease. Inform of the presence of overhead service lines. Use sun cream, drink plenty of fluids and protect skin by covering with light clothing. Avoid contact with plant especially when cutting. Wear gloves. Keep paths clear of the plant. Infected bites or at worst Lyme s Disease Be extra vigilant when entering or exiting the site. There is a risk to drivers/other road users when leaving the site as there are bends in the road, reducing visibility. Be aware of vehicles accessing Thames Water treatment works. Long trousers and sleeves should be worn in season, check body after visit esp waist, legs, armpits. Remove with a twist, but ensure all mouthparts come free, if in doubt visit GP. Advise groups.
