Cam in the Classroom: Mrs. Harris Copeland Middle School Lake Shore Drive, Rockaway, NJ October 24, 2012 Good Morning Amanda...having some technical issues with the computer here but we are ready! Good morning! Glad you have your technical issues ironed out... Our 19 special needs kids are SOOOO excited to be here for class! I have my pencil sharpened for class Mrs. Harris! GM Mrs. Harris and class. Good morning class! Present here in CT Mrs. Harris Good morning class from Canada. Hello all! We have many questions this morning about the Great Horned Owl and the Bald Eagle... Are you ready? I am ready! I hope I can keep up. Good morning Mrs. Harris,Amanda and class!!! Good morning class from Missouri! Classroom: Mrs. Harris 1 10/24/2012

What type of birds and how many birds are predators of the Great Horned Owl???? Great Horned Owls actually don't have any natural predators -- they're really at the top of their food chain! There are several unnatural threats though (like with any raptor). Great Horned Owls are often hit by cars. How do the foxes and the wolves get the Great horned owls? (dan P) Well, we don't have wolves here in VA... and the foxes don't get the GHOWs! That would be a pretty brave fox to try, I think. What is the highest lifespan of a Bald Eagle???? They can live to be 30 years old in the wild... I'm not sure if the very-most top record holder -- but I think there have been cases of Bald Eagles living into their 30's, though that would be pretty rare! Why is the great horned owl called the great horned owl if it doesn't have a horn (Sophia L) Ah, whoever named the Great Horned Owl was referred to the feather tufts on top of their heads -- they look like horns, but they're not! Quinn the Great Horned Owl Classroom: Mrs. Harris 2 10/24/2012

What are some preys of the great horned owl Great Horned Owls have incredibly varied diets -- mice, woodchucks, bats, geese, songbirds, other birds of prey, lizards, snakes, frogs, insects, and worms... but do you guys know what seems to be a particular favorite? (think about the stinkiest animal that no one would want to eat...) I have 3 of them in my yard Quinn can have! Ah, Carolyn knows... Where do great horned owls live (madeline) They are found in the eastern half of the United States and southeastern Canada. Most often found in forests and woodlands, they may also hunt along open country. The Great Horned Owl and Red-tailed Hawk often occupy the same territory. The hawk hunts during the day, the owl at night. Since these two large raptors occupy the same area, there may be confrontations between the two species. Do bald eagles have many predators? No, similar to the Great Horned Owl, not a lot of things want to attack a Bald Eagle! But humaninteractions sometimes affect them... if they are hit by cars, poisoned, shot, etc... Is it a skunk? (Michael) Yes, skunks are a favorite prey of a Great Horned Owl! How does the male bald eagle take care of the kids while the female goes hunting? (Nicolette) He protects them, just like the female would if he was out hunting... watches out for other eagles, birds, anything that might harm the babies. Classroom: Mrs. Harris 3 10/24/2012

Do great horned owls eat mice? Yes, especially at the Wildlife Center! Since x-rays would sensor a metallic or bronze bullet in the birds wing, could I't may it have been shot with a high powered airsoft gun or bb gun with plastic pellets(ben M) The plastic wouldn't show up very well on radiographs, you're right... but it may appear that something "fuzzy" is there. What kind of fish do the great horned owl like (Asha P.) I think that may be one thing that they don t typically eat... at least don't typically hunt for! What kind of fish do bald eagles eat (Michael) I guess it really depends on what sort of fish are around -- where the eagle is! We know that Bald Eagle NX seems to really like hanging out near the water, so I imagine she's fishing... the one place that she's been hanging out most recently, has largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and bluegill. How old is the bald eagle you have there?(matt h) Our education eagle? Buddy is four years old... I guess closer to four and a half now! How is the great Horned owl with the injured wing doing and what do you think happened? (Hannah D) This owl on cam? I forgot he even had some matted feathers on one wing when he came in... he's doing great! Flying very well. Not sure what happened... sometimes it's frustrating that we just can't tell! Perhaps ran into something, or could've been just lightly hit by a car... but it's hard to say. Classroom: Mrs. Harris 4 10/24/2012

What does a Great Horned Owl show when they are about to give birth? (Seth) I imagine they're a lot like the other birds of prey before they lay eggs -- just spending a lot of time in the nest. Where does bald Eagle live? ( Robin G) They seem to prefer living near a body of water -- whether that is the coast, or an inlet, river, etc. Why does the bald eagle only give birth to eggs in the month of February { Mahika Sethi} Well, that's when it's typical for them to lay eggs -- just that time of year, I guess to give their chicks plenty of time to grow up and fledge while food is plentiful. But if they lose that first clutch of eggs for some reason, they will try again -- so they can lay eggs in March as well... and have some later hatches. That was the case with Buddy! Where do Bald Eagles nest? (Katya) Where does the bald eagle nest? Well, we know they like loblolly pines... and they usually return to the same area every year, if not the same nest. How many eggs can a bald eagle lay A typical clutch is two to three eggs. How many eagles do you have the Wildlife Center (Asha P) At the moment, we have four Bald eagle patients, and Buddy. And Junior, the Golden Eagle! Why do the female owl hunts and the male owls protects the nests (Gabrielle) Classroom: Mrs. Harris 5 10/24/2012

Actually in the Great Horned Owl world, the dad does most of the hunting, so the mom can sit on/with the babies and then feed them when he comes back. He doesn't really do much feeding. Why is the bald eagle our national bird (David.J Kilano) I think because of the symbolism of courage and strength... and because it's found in the US (and Canada too) but it's not really found elsewhere in the world. But you know what the 2nd choice was (who Ben Franklin wanted)...? What is buddy's new career?? Mahika Sethi Well, to be an education eagle! He's doing that even in his enclosure, for all of our on-site tours and programs. And wait until Buddy Cam starts going... Do Bald eagles ever attack humans? (Katya) Not generally, though I think if someone was disturbing their nest with babies... you might encounter an attack! What's the most serious injury that a Great Horned owl? (Nicolette) Well, they can have a wide variety of very serious injuries... broken bones... other trauma, big skin wounds... I remember early this year a Great Horned Owl came in with lead poisoning, which isn't typical for a Great Horned Owl, but he was very very sick. How far can a bald eagle fly? (Stephane A) At once? Good question... A wild turkey? Classroom: Mrs. Harris 6 10/24/2012

Waving my hand, Amanda...the Turkey! Turkey! Ben F wanted it to be the turkey -- glad it's an eagle instead Yes, great! How many feathers are on the Bald Eagle it total?? {mahika Sethi} Ohh, where is Congo when you need her... something like 7,000? What varieties differ from the Great horned owl like what colors do they come as They don't have official different varieties (like screech owls) but they definitely do vary!! Some are lighter, some are more reddish... some may even have grey eyes (like we saw earlier this year. Or was that last year?) Almost time for the bell. We have a fabulous time this morning! How many people and where are they from please!!! Wonderful! Thanks for joining us this morning! Michigan Waving from KY 271 on this morning... Great questions this morning class. Southern NJ here.
