Day 1 Essential Questions: ~What is genetics? Genetics ~What are examples of physical traits? ~What are examples of behavioral adaptations or learned behaviors? ~How are inherited traits different from learned behaviors? ~How are dominant and recessive genes passed down from parents to offspring?
Todays Question? How are inherited traits different from learned behaviors?
How would you describe yourself?? So, before we begin lets make a list of 5 characteristics that describe you on the next page of your notebook. You can take about 5 minutes to do this.
How did you describe yourself? You might have said something like...i have brown eyes and that I like to skateboard. Now look at your list of 5 characteristics. How many of your descriptions could also describe someone else in your family and circle them.
How many of you listed a physical characteristic that both you and a parent share. Well chances are that physical characteristic is an inherited trait. Now, look at your list if any of the characteristics you wrote down are something that you learned to do these are called learned behaviors. All humans and animals are a mix of characteristics from their parents and behaviors they learned from their parents or on their own.
Let's look at a few families that you may recognize. We are going to discuss the characteristics that they share. We can also talk about who looks more like a certain parent. Be sure to look at siblings too! Is this Mrs. Obama's mom or the Obama's mom?
Taylor Swift's Family...with her brother
Now let's pretend that you have brown eyes and you like to skateboard... Your dad also has brown eyes but can't skateboard. Which of these two things is inherited and which is a learned behavior?
September 28, 2017 What is genetics? *Teachers Genetics is the scientific study of heredity. What is a Trait? A trait is a noticeable feature or physical characteristic in a person, animal or plant. "Families" have different combination of traits that make them unique. Traits are passed from generation to generation. An inherited trait is passed from parents to offspring. For example, in many animals, hair color or fur color is an inherited trait. So is eye color. *Students Genetics is the study of heredity Trait is a noticeable feature or physical characteristic Traits are passed from generation to generation Inherited Trait is passed on from parents to offspring
Day 2 Genetics Essential Questions: ~What is genetics? ~What are examples of physical traits? ~What are examples of behavioral adaptations or learned behaviors? ~How are inherited traits different from learned behaviors? ~How are dominant and recessive genes passed down from parents to offspring?
What Are Inherited Traits? An inherited trait/heredity is a trait or characteristic that is genetically inherited or passed down from generation to generation or a trait passed down from parents to their offspring. There are a lot of different inherited traits. Inherited Trait: A trait or characteristic that is genetically inherited or passed down from generation to generation. Example: Eye color Hair type (curly, straight) and color Skin tone and freckles Body build and height (tall, short, etc.) Inherited trait: characteristic passed down from generation to generation Examples: Eye color, hair type, Hair color, Skin tone, freckles, body build & height
September 28, 2017 What Are Some Other Inherited Traits? There are lots of things passed on from your parents that you might not even think of such as... Attached or Unattached earlobes Tongue Rolling Dimples Hitchhikers Thumb
What Are Inherited Traits? Humans are not the only ones who have inherited traits. Plants and animals also inherit traits from their parents as well. Animals also have what is known as instinct. Which is passed down from parents to offspring. Puppy and mother have same coat/fur.
What Are Learned Behaviors? A learned behavior is something that you are taught or have learned to do. We do learn somethings from our parents but other things such as skateboarding we might learn by ourselves. Learned Behavior: Behavior that is taught or acquired through experience. Examples: Playing an instrument Playing sports Style Cooking Learned Behavior: behavior that is taught Examples: Playing sports, playing an instrument, style, cooking
What Are Learned Behaviors? Just like inherited traits animals also have learned behaviors. The majority of them they learn from their parent. Some are acquired traits due to environmental influences. Birds building a nest the same way their parents did. Beavers building a dam to live Animals knowing which kind of plants are poisonous
Day 3 & 4 Essential Questions: ~What is genetics? Genetics ~What are examples of physical traits? ~What are examples of behavioral adaptations or learned behaviors? ~How are inherited traits different from learned behaviors? ~How are dominant and recessive genes passed down from parents to offspring?
Genetics A Recipe for Traits: Today you are going to create a DNA recipe for a dog. You will be using a Traits Key to read your DNA recipe and make a drawing of a dog showing all of it's traits.
Day 3 & 4 Directions: A Recipe for Traits 1. Pull out one slip of paper from your envelope. Each piece of paper represents a different trait. > 1st strip is: Body > 2nd strip is: Head > 3rd: Ears > 4th: Legs > 5th: Eyes > 6th: Tail > 7th: Coat Color > 8th: Hair 2. Use the symbols on the DNA strip you have chosen. Match the pattern to the one you see on the Dog Traits Key. 3. Circle the picture above that matches the DNA piece that you picked. 4. Set the used piece to the side. 5. Continue steps 2-4 until you have all 8 traits circled on the Dog Traits Key. 6. After you have finished, draw your dog with all of its traits (That You Circled) on a separate sheet of paper.
Something Extra Genes are a set of instructions in EACH living cell that determines inherited physical features and other traits. Each person is given one gene from our mom and one from our dad. Of the two genes we get some are dominant and others are recessive. Dominant genes are in control; represented by a capital letter (B). Recessive genes are weaker; can only be seen when you have 2 recessive genes; represented by a lower case letter (b). So the genes you receive are what makes you, you. Now is there anyway you can determine what traits you'll have? Well, actually there is. Scientists use something called...
Something Extra A punnett square is a tool which biologists use to predict the probability of possible genes of offspring. Let's watch a BrainPop on heredity that tells more about the Punnett Square.
