We just had the National Dog show in Oaks, with 9 Newf s entered. We would like to congratulate Diane Webber and Quinn on winning Best of Breed. I want to thank John Affel and his crew for doing a great job with lunch on Saturday. In 2017 we will be having both a Draft and Water test, both have been approved by the NCA. More information will be coming. Anyone who would like to help with these events, please contact Joan Fenwick for the Draft Test or Andi Ottey for the Water Test. These are both a good chance for anyone thinking of getting into Draft or Water work to see how they take place and the work necessary to be ready to test. This is your club and the more people that help, the better the event. The annual meeting and Fall Fun Fest, held on October 8, were well attended and lunch was great. I would like to thank Diane Weber, Kat Lynn and their crew for making this event one that all will want to come back to next year. In closing Andi and I want to wish all a Merry Christmas and a very New Year for 2017. Gary

BEAR FACTS PAGE Plow Farms Tree Pull December 10, 2016. Weather conditions were perfect for Newfs but a bit chilly for their human companions for our first annual Pennsylvania Christmas Tree Pull at beautiful Plow Farms in Plowville, PA. Our hosts Brenda and Greg Eshelman, the owners of Plow Farms, welcomed us on a chilly December Greg Eshelman welcoming our morning, and our Newfs Newfs to Plow Farms. welcomed all the families who came out to the farm. Quite a few of our Newfs (along with their moms and dads) spent the day meeting and greeting as Newf Ambassadors while others worked hard Brenda+Eshelman+and+her+ pulling in trees for the families who cut granddaughter+in+their+awesome+ down their trees. Philo, Atlas, Millie, Glory Tree+Pull+Sweatshirts and Jonah helped folks pull their trees in and the customers were thrilled to have their help! Thank you to Sarah Ivy with Gunther, Jamie Jay Rothstein with Millie, Glenn Lesher with Glory, Amy and Dave Supko with Philo and Philo Buford, Karin Bystol with Atlas, Kathy Weber with Ellie, Andi and Gary Ottey with Jonah, Dawn and Tom Hockman with Chase and Betsy and Joan and Doug Fenwick with Bess, who spent the day Jonah spreading Newfie cheer to all the people who came to the farm. Thank you also to friends who stopped in during the day to say hello and share their Newfs with everyone: Larry Smoker with Bentley, Kim with Coco, Preston and Cortney with Matilda (Newf puppy) and several others over the course of the Betsy+and+Chase day. Folks were very interested in our Newfoundland dogs and wanted to learn more about the breed. We collected $186 in contributions for Newf Rescue. Millie Glory 4

BEAR FACTS PAGE 5 New Jersey Tree Pull We had another great event this year for the third annual NJ Tree Pull at Country Heritage Farm in Augusta, NJ. We had 7 carting dogs pulling in 80 trees. We raised $491.00 for NewPenDel Rescue. This year one of the highlights was that the NJ Herald newspaper was on the scene and covered the tree pull in a local article that was printed on the front page of the NJ Herald on Nov. 29th. We had some new carting members join us this year and we look forward to an even better turnout next year! We are hoping to have a dozen carting dogs for next year s tree pull. Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie and joined in in celebrating the season together.

BEAR FACTS PAGE 10 Winter Training Do you have the winter time blues? Remember that winter is the perfect time to brush up on your obedience skills! Obedience is the foundation of both water and draft training as well as being a fun way to bond with your dog. It improves condition and helps develop teamwork with your dog. Train at home or in groups. Set training play dates with your friends. Attend obedience Fun Matches to brush up on your competition skills. Find a training club near you and attend classes. There are even on-line obedience classes! You (or your dog) are never too old or too young to polish foundation skills or learn new ones - and all fitness levels can participate! Remember, water training season will be here before you know it! Now is the time to work on your retrieve, take, hold and carry, lefts, rights, halts and recalls. Obedience is great fun and is the absolute foundation of successful water and draft training. Spend some time this winter on your obedience skills! Your dog will thank you!
