By Joe Ziino As another year passes into the history books, it's always good to take a moment to reflect back and take stock of where we've been in order to plan for where we're going. We had another full year of community service in 2011 and from the participation level at our events; I believe it was also a lot of fun for everyone. I would like to thank all members of the G.S.D.C.W. for the support and participation this past year. Additionally I would like to encourage those members who did not participate to give us a try. Often I am asked, "How can I join P.E.T.S." My standard answer is YOU ARE already a member of P.E.T.S., come and join us at any of our events. Our requirements are simple. We are very informal, we like to have fun at our events and we like to party! Come as often or as little as you wish; everyone is welcome. We try to schedule at least one event per month consisting of some form of community service or promotion of the G.S.D.C.W. Since we do interact with the public, dogs must be of sound temperament. What is Schutzhund!? Captain Max von Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsches Schäferhunde (SV) in 1899. The Deutsche Schäferhunde, or German Shepherd Dog, was developed through thoughtful selection of a combination of the several types of herding dogs present in Germany: the coarse and wiry dogs from Thuringia and Frankonia (small stocky sables with erect ears but a tendency toward hooked tails) and the Wurttemberg dogs which were larger, heavier boned with better movement but poor ear carriage. Horand von Grafrath, a sable male, was the first registered German Shepherd Dog and served as prototype for the breed to come. Extremely focused early inbreeding and selective culling created the wonderful breed we see today. The breed was developed from herding stock as a utilitarian working dog. Almost immediately concern arose that the dogs while demonstrating some improvement in certain structural aspects, were becoming diminished in their working qualities. As a result, Schutzhund, meaning quite literally, protection dog, was developed as a test of the working ability, intelligence and endurance of the German Shepherd Dog. All aspects of this sport were developed specifically to enhance the quality of the breed! The only German Shepherds that were (and are in Germany) allowed to reproduce and maintain registration with the SV were animals that had been tested and titled in Schutzhund, titled at least with a "G" or Gut in conformation and Breed Surveyed or evaluation to be either recommended for breeding or acceptable for breeding. An endurance test is also part of this requirement. Schutzhund itself consists of three phases: tracking, obedience and protection. It is tested at three levels, Schutzhund One, Schutzhund Two and Schutzhund Three. The sport and the preparation training is time consuming and grueling. For an animal to succeed in the sport of schutzhund requires intelligence, strong natural drives, strength, courage and physical presence and endurance. The dog faces stressors on every level that evaluate its natural working tendencies with the end result optimally being that the dog is titled and absolutely correct and appropriate to reproduce physically and mentally sound future generations of German Shepherd Dogs. This sport was created specifically for our breed!! The tracking phase also includes a temperament test to exhibit the dog's mental soundness. The dog may not be shy nor aggressive on a loose leash. The track is laid by the handler in the Schutzhund One, by a stranger in the Schutzhund Two and Three and in the extremely difficult and coveted FH (advanced tracking ) title. The track itself is laid either on dirt or a grassy type substrate. There are increasing numbers of turns and small objects of leather, wood or cloth that the dog must indicate. The dog may track freely or at the end of a 33 foot leash. The dog must stay true to the track and not follow the wind scent. This phase tests trainability, the ability to scent, mental and physical endurance and the ability to problem solve without handler input (which is NOT allowed). The obedience phase consists of heeling exercises, including heeling through a group and a gun-shot test performed during the heeling pattern. If the dog has reaction to the gun-shots he/she is disqualified from the competition and this is noted in the scorebook of the dog for lifetime notation. In the field exercises the dog is required to sit, down and stand out of motion while the handler either continues to walk (Schutzhund One) or run (Schutzhund Three). From various positions the dog is recalled to the handler. The dog must also retrieve dumbbells of various weights up to five pounds. The dog must retrieve over the flat, over a one meter hurdle also over a very steep slightly slanted six foot wall. The dog is asked also to do a send out, going straight out at a fast run for 40-60 paces, and then is required to drop immediately on command. The dog must also do a down with distraction away from its handler despite significant distraction on the field from another dog and handler team. These exercises test the dog's temperament, structural efficiency and durability, working drives and its willingness to serve its handler with happiness and enthusiasm. The protection phase is perhaps the most misunderstood phase. This phase absolutely mandates the GSD's courage, strength and agility. In additional, it demonstrates the bond between handler and dog in the absolute control that is required in extreme stress and while in extreme drive!!! The exercises consist of a blind search that requires a directed search (for the bad guy) of a progressing number of blinds (two to six) or hiding places eventually revealing the decoy who must be guarded with absolute control and power (no contact) until the handler approaches. The dog is then called

to handler and mandated to pursue and stop the decoy when an escape is attempted. The grips must be held calmly and firmly and the dog must release instantly on command. The decoy then directly attacks the dog and handler and the dog must immediately stop the attack with a calm and powerful grip, outing on command. At the Schutzhund Two and Three levels the dog and handler follow or transport the decoy and must fend off a direct attack. The dog must also show absolute control but intensity on a side transport to the judge. The most dramatic part of this phase is no doubt the courage test which tests the dogs ability to run directly into a fiercely threatening decoy, as he comes out of a hiding place in a blind. The dog must come down the entire length of the field and not deviate but go directly into a grip on the sleeve. The grips must be full and calm and stop immediately when the fight desists or when commanded. In addition the dog must endure visible stick hits (padded stick) and not show stress. Once again absolute control is necessary, without which a passing score is impossible. These test must reveal that the dog is courageous and responsive to handler command. *Each phase receives 100pts for a total of 300pts (for a perfect score) for the title. The scores are in graded from Insufficient(209-0), to Satisfactory(239-210), to Good(269-240), to Very Good(285-270), to Excellent (300-286). (With similar breakdown for scoring in the individual exercises and phases!!) TSB In the protection phase a further desired grading is bestowed if the dog demonstrates "pronounced" courage and drives or "TSB". The TSB -Evaluation should serve the purpose of describing a dog s character trades if the dog should be used for breeding purposes. The TSB -Evaluation does neither influence the trial result nor does it influence a formation. A dog must complete at least one protection exercise to receive a TSB -Evaluation. The ratings pronounced (a), present (vh) and not sufficient (ng) describe the following characteristics: Triebveranlagung = instinctive behaviour, Selbstsicherheit = self-confidence, Belastbarkeit = ability to cope with stress. TSB pronounced : Is given to a dog that shows strong willingness to work, clear instinctive behavior, determination in its performance, presents itself in a self-confident manner, pays undivided attention and is capable to cope with a severe amount of stress. TSB present : Is given to a dog that has limitations concerning its willingness to work, instinctive behavior, selfconfidence, attentiveness and ability to cope with stress. TSB not sufficient : Is given to a dog with insufficient willingness to work, insufficient instinctive behavior, missing self-confidence and insufficient ability to cope with stress. **This grading is required for breeding. In summary, however, this sport was designed, "specifically" to evaluate the breed worthiness of the German Shepherd Dog. Outside of the sport itself, as in the AKC venues, the dog must also be evaluated for correctness of structure. Importantly though, this venue evaluates the intelligence, character, strength (both physical and mental) and working character of the breed. The training alone requires commitment and many hours, weeks, months and years of preparation. The dog, to really excel in this venue, must be absolutely correct in temperament and character, not aggressive, not shy, not weak, not apathetic. The end result, however, displays our breed at its very best. This is an animal, when correct in character and physicality, that can survive the extreme mental and physical stressors of this sport and be trusted in any situation. It is an animal, as Max von Stephanitz intended, that is prepared to be placed in any working or performance situation and excel. It is our family companion and guardian, our military dog, our police dog, seeing eye dog our dual titled show dog. It is that extra something we all see in the German Shepherd Dog at its very best--foremost, this is the background--the earth--that helped to form the quality breed we see today!! TIME TO SPARE? DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SPARE TO MAKE A LONESOME PERSON HAPPY? ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO A GROUP OF US RESPONDED TO A CALL FROM HERITAGE AT DEER CREEK IN NEW BER- LIN TO COME AND ENTERTAIN THE RESIDENTS. Santana s Black Magic CGC OA OAJ OAP OJP 01/13/1999 01/17/2012 When I adopted Santana from a breed rescue, I couldn t imagine the challenges ahead. With the help and patience of our friends at the GSD Club, I was able to help Santana find her place in the world. Along the way, Santana not only earned her CGC, but we found the sport for her -- agility! I can t thank the GSD Club enough for helping me to rehabilitate Santana from a nervous dog with a short fuse to a happy, confident agility dog with a box full of ribbons, toys and plaques. A loving family, wonderful friends, delicious food and a great job what more could a dog ask for? Loyal friend Companion Protector Agility partner Family member Santana, thank you for filling our hearts and home with fun, love and furballs! It was an honor to share our lives with you. - The Antony Family Cheri, Scott and Taylor
