Apivar Effective tool specially designed for Varroa Mite management in honeybee colonies Controlled-release strips formulated with 3.3% Amitraz (0.5g active per 15g strip)

Apivar : a new toolto relyon Continuously released amitraz in the colony over a six-week treatment, ensuring healthy and productive colonies Kills up to 99% of mites in one application Proven safe and effective for more than 15 years Leaves no significant residues in hive products Convenient and easy to use

Amitraz : Miticidewell-known for its effectiveness AMITRAZ Contact DEATH DUE TO STARVATION DROP FROM BEE BACK MOVEMENT DIFFICULTIES PARALYSIS No immediate knock-down. Gradual reduction of mites over extended period

Continuously-released in the colony over a six-week period Contact action only = no vaporization into the atmosphere of the hives. High importance of positioning into the colony for a high level of efficacy

Apivar interrupts the mite reproduction cycle Apivar kills the phoreticmites, as well as successive generations, leaving the bees mite-free. A fertilized female Varroa mite enters the cell. The young bee leaves the cell carrying two fertilized female mites. The cell is sealed and the fertilized Varroa mite enclosed feeds on haemolymph from the bee larva. The female mite continues to lay eggs. When the female offspring reach sexual maturity, they are fertilized by the one male mite in the cell. The female mite lays an egg every 30 hours. The first offspring is a male; the subsequent offspring are all female.

Advantage of long release technology Theoretical modeling of the effects of 2 types of treatments Repeated short-acting treatment or single-shot controlled-released treatment

Kills up to 99% of mites in one application

Effective to control Varroa mite infestation High level of effectiveness of amitraz + High quality standard of amitraz + Long release technology More than 15 years of effectiveness of Apivar Many effectiveness studies performed in numerous countries under different environmental conditions (France, New-Zealand, Canada, USA, Japan, Turkey )

Field effectiveness study USA -2009 Compared to control colonies, Apivar reduced mite loads significantly (P < 0,0001) Jeff Pettis, Denis vanengelsdorp 2009

Proven safe for more than 15 years Perfectly safe for bees and beekeepers No significant residues in hive products

Safefor beesand queens Harmlessto beesand queensatup to 5 times recommendeddose The product had no effect on bee mortality, size of the brood-comb, hive activity, hive weight or the size of the honey harvest when used at twice the indicated dose. 10 strips per [Dadant] hive would not cause side effects Apivar product therefore has a considerable safety margin particularly if we consider its very low risk in the case of overdose Source:http://www.emea.europa.eu/docs/en_GB/document_library/Maximu m_residue_limits_-_report/2009/11/wc500010373.pdf Source: T.M. Trower et al, amitraz residues in honeyand beewax, 2002

High level of safety in comparison with illegal treatment No direct contact with the active No vaporization in the hive atmosphere Wearing of chemical-resistant gloves is recommended Controlled-released disposal Residues in hive products, and particularly in honey, are insignificant regardless of when the product is used 1. Refer to instruction for use on the label as US Sect 18 authorization adds restrictions for the timing of use. No excipients introduced that may interact or potentialize other stressors 1: http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/apido:2007038 Martel et al, Acaricideresidues in honey and wax after treatment of honey bee colonies with Apivar or Asuntol 50, Apidologie 38 (2007) 534 544

Instructions for use

Easyto use

Instructions for use 1-Use 2 Apivar stripsper broodchamber Separate the double rigid strips. 2-Use the strip's die-cut triangle as a hanging hook, or insert a toothpick or hook in the hole provided. 3-Hang each strip between two comb frames inside the brood area or the bee cluster, with a minimum distance of two frames between strips.

Instructions for use

Instructions for use Insertions of Strips End of treatment Insert honey supers 6 weeks = one full treatment 2 weeks after treatment 2 strips per brood chamber Inside the brood area Treat all colonies at the same time Wear protective gloves Remove after a maximum of 56 days Do not re-use the strips If the bee cluster moves away from the strips, reposition the strips into the bee cluster, and leave them in place for 14 more days before removal.

Timing recommendations 2 applications per year are possible (if required) Goal: lowerthe infestation rate to secure honey yield Goal: lowerthe infestation rate to secure wintering

Practical information #1 Treatment effectiveness depends of the position of the strips Mode of action: The distribution of amitraz in the colony results from the bees coming into contact with the strips. Recommended positioning: Place the strips in the brood area (2 strips per brood chamber) to ensure the highest frequency of contact of the bees with the strips

Practical information #2 Treatment effectiveness can be increased by feeding bees Feeding bees stimulates the colony, which increases the activity of the honey bees. Advice : feeding bees while the Apivar strips are installed will improve the colony s health by: Enhancing contact with Apivar strips, thereby improving distribution of the active ingredient inside the colony Stimulating new brood development with fewer mites.

Practical information #3 Treatment effectiveness can be increased by treating all the colonies of the apiary at the same time In the colony: Adult varroa are present on the back of the foragers High frequency of robbing and drifting Many exchanges between honeybees and colonies including parasitic ones! Varroa treatment : If all colonies are not treated at the same time, there is high risk of re-infestation after the removal of the strips in the treated hives.

Practical information #4 Treatment effectiveness can be increased by repositioning the strips In the colony Frequent movements of the brood inside the hive --> Strips no longer in the area of high activity --> Less effective distribution of amitraz in the colony Recommendation for Apivar treatment: Check the position of the strips during the treatment or at the end. In case of movement of bees inside the beehive away from the strips, reposition the strips into the bee cluster and leave in place for 14 days.

Apivar : a new toolto relyon CONVENIENT ONLY 1 TREATMENT REQUIRED FOR 6 WEEKS OF PROTECTION USABLE INSPRINGAND IN FALL PROVEN EFFECTIVENESS UP TO 99% REDUCTION IN MITES IN BROOD SAFE RESIDUES LEVELS VERY LOW AND CONTROLLED NO ACCUMULATION OF RESIDUES IN BEESWAX SAFE FORYOUR BEES, BROOD, QUEENS...

CAUTION Apivar has been approved under Section 18 emergency use exemptions in select states. Apivar does not have Section 18 approval in all states. Prior to using this product, contact your local Department of Agriculture or your Apivar distributor to determine the status of Section 18 authorization in your state.
