I. Understanding country situation CURRENT SITUATION OIE questionnaire: Section I, point 3, 6 OIE Article 7.7.5. POINT 1 In the development of a dog population control programme it is recommended that the authorities establish an advisory group, which should include veterinarians, experts in dog ecology, dog behaviour and zoonotic diseases, and representatives of relevant stakeholders (local authorities, human health services/authorities, environmental control services?/ authorities, NGOs and the public). The main purpose of this advisory group would be to analyse and quantify the problem, identify the causes, obtain public opinion on dogs and propose the most effective approaches to use in the short and long term. Conclusions and future needs OIE questionnaire: Section IV MAIN WEAK POINTS - Lack of knowledge - Insufficient number of human resources (central level) - Insufficient involvement NGO sector on the proper manner - Hording - Economical factor FUTURE STEPS: - Collection of the data on stray dogs population on central level - Creation of the National Program for the control and reduction of the population of abandoned dogs and cats - Cost-benefit analyses - Joint activities
