A big thank you to Varol Tarpis for his contribution this month with reports on last month s Table Show and the recent Northside Annual Show where Hills members did rather well. Also appearing are some great photos and information from Ian Hanington on the Melanistic Spangle, where the markings are dark and prominent, reminiscent of the original mutation. As with many varieties the colour and or markings have disappeared over time, or they are poor in comparison. HILLS BRANCH GRAND CHAMPIONS AT NORTHSIDE ANNUAL SHOW 2012 The Northside Branch held its annual variety bird show on Sunday the 16 th September at the St Ives Showground. Organisers Pam Giles, Paul O Neill and the rest of the Northside members doing a great job with the running of the show. The show attracted exhibitors from as far as Dubbo and a good number from the Central Coast Branch were in attendance. The venue and weather for the show was excellent as the birds were staged in a large pavilion within a bushland setting. Our member Graeme Gordon got up close to the locals with a brave kookaburra swooping down and stealing his half eaten cookie from his very hands. There was close to 300 birds exhibited and good numbers in all status groups. The Hills Branch had a good turnout at the show with not only members exhibiting their birds but 2 of the 3 judges were from our branch ( Peter Dodd and Andre Ozoux). It is great to have so many of our members attending making it a very enjoyable day for all. The Hills Branch members took out the major awards at the show with Kathy and Ian Manton taking out the Grand Champion and Open Champion award. The Branch also took out Champion Open and Novice Opposite Sex along with many of the Variety awards on offer on the day. Hills District Branch August Table Show This months table show was judged by Andre Ozoux with Craig Buckingham and the show assistants helping to stage the birds on the night. A good number of birds were entered in both the Open/intermediate and Novice classes making the table show very competitive. A big thank you for the members for taking the time and effort to bring birds to the show. Our monthly meetings are enhanced with the table shows allowing all members to see a sample of our branches birds. We would still like more members bringing birds to future table shows, If not for any other reason but to train the birds for showing. The following are the winners for the night. Melanistic Spangles By Ian Hanington As you will see, there are quite a number of different colours & varieties that I have mixed in with the dark marked Spangles now. The Cinnamons & the Opalines, as well as the combinations of both, seem to retain the dark markings pretty well, once they have the melanistic colour in them. The Opaline Cinnamon Violet hen at the end is from a pair, where only the mother was a melanistic, & even though the young hen was not carrying the Spangle markings, she certainly retained the deep colour, in both the Cinnamon markings & the body colour. One real problem that I believe exists, is the fact that if there is any flecking in the background of the parents, you can bet it will appear on the young ones. There is a photo of a Yellowface Grey hen (Melanistic) included, & her previous 2 generations have been really clean, but she is a bloody shocker, dirty a buggery. But at the same time, the black markings on her are so much deeper than normally would be seen. Who knows, maybe we will be able to use them to intensify the body colour on some of our varieties which seem to be slowly but surely, losing their depth. I have tried putting 2 Melanistic Cinnamon Spangles together to see what happens with the ensuing young Double Factors, but they look a lot like the Double Factors did 25 years ago, with all the suffused body colour on the lower half of their body. This year I'm putting some dark marked Spangles with Normal Spangles, just to see what happens with the body colour in both the single & double factor young ones. When they are in the nest, it is absolutely impossible to pick some of the young Spangles from the Normals, the tail feathers are the only give away.
"Budgie News"July-August 1980 Seed Values. by George Mitchell Years ago when seed growers were not so concerned about high production and extra good results from a crop, our birds seemed to give better fertility. In the early 50's we had good strong and robust birds, big nests and our stock birds seemed to last longer as stock birds. These days the high use of D.D.T.'s and special agricultural sprays, has, in my opinion had a detrimental effect on our birds in the breeding cage. I would like to touch on the various seeds we feed these days as food values for our birds. In Plain Canary seed, and for that matter all seeds, the protein content is variable in regard chiefly to the soil in which it was grown. Canary seed is also valuable by reason of its fat content although in that regard it is not quite as valuable as White French Millet. The fat content, carbohydrates and the calorie value which goes hand in hand with them, are higher in the White French Millet than in Canary seed. Calories denote heat energy. Utilisation: - Even though the protein content may vary between 15% and 20% it is the amount of protein actually utilised that must be considered as not all of the protein eaten will be used. Some cannot be absorbed by the body before being passed out. It is the amino-acids which influence the utilisation of protein. All told there are 23 known amino-acids among which are cystine, lysine and methionine, the most important of which to birds is methionine. The prime function of protein in the animal body is to supply the amino-acids Animal protein food is generally of a higher quality than plant protein foods particularly because it contains large amounts of certain essential amino-acids. These essential amino-acids cannot be made by the birds and must therefore be supplied in some form. In the utilisation of grain, fibre plays an important part. For example whole oats is relatively high in fibre. in hulling, the outside skin is taken off and the fibre content greatly reduced. The fibre content is much greater in small grains such as Millets than larger grains like wheat, sorghums and maize mainly because of the greater proportion of skin coating around smaller seeds. Although Millets are slightly higher in fibre than Plain Canary the Canary seed is much higher in protein. The fat content is about the same, however, the Canary seed has a small amount of Calcium and a good amount of Phosphorous which, combined with its high protein content makes it a very valuable (and necessary). Pannicum seed is fairly high in protein (11%-14%) and much of this protein is utilised. The fat content and calorie value of Pannicum are lower than some other grains so you see that the idea of blending these various grains is to balance the ration in regard to protein, fat, oil, vitamin and calorie intake. White Plillet is a grain which has come into prominence over recent years. It is one of the major seeds grown in Queensland and is especially used for stock feeding. It has a high protein content and high energy value. It has a low ash content which denotes very little wastage. It has no Calcium value and very little Phosphorus. Calcium content is very low in most grains and must therefore be given a lot of thought in your feeding as it is essential in the diet of any bird or animal. Calcium is necessary for bone structure and egg shell texture. A deficiency will lead to softened bones, a tendency for the joints to swell and of course poor quality or soft shelled eggs. Calcium has to be related to Phosphorus intake. The grains cannot supply sufficient phosphorus and although these minerals can be obtained from sea grit, cuttlefish or Mt. Gambier limestone I have always supported adding Syrup of Calcium to the drinking water. Breeders should also be feeding Grey Sunflower seed, Safflower seed and crushed Maize in their seed mixtures at this time of year. These seeds are high in protein content (18%-20%) and have great value in the oils they supply. Should breeders wish to use an oil in their breeding mixture any of the following will do - Safflower, Maize, Sunflower and Soya Bean oil with the latter also being high in vitamin content. Do not use Cod Liver Oil in your seed mix as it has been found to be responsible for's enlarging the heart and heart tissues of budgerigars and canaries with fatal results.
Temperament - The Major Show Point of All By Alistair Home In November I judged a show for 'Unbroken Caps' in the north of Tasmania. I think you should always regard these shows as social occasions and pay less attention to the results than you might give to the major open shows. After all, it is a bit of a lottery to see which birds are in condition for the show, and most of us would not spend time preparing babies in the way we would prepare older birds. It did occur to me though that some birds seemed to handle the situation better than others. Generally babies are at their best between forty and fifty days. Their feathers are still in good condition and they haven't learnt the wildness that can come from flying in the aviary. Probably they are still very familiar with their owner's hand and often they are quite tame. They then go into a really scruffy phase, although I will admit that I've seen some babies that seemed to improve just before going into their first moult. People who do not fly their babies early seem to be able to keep the birds in a reasonably quiet frame of mind in the stock cage. Another factor that seems to help the very young is that they naturally puff their feathers out as a way of attracting attention when they want to be fed. This makes their heads seem better than the heads of birds not displaying. I think we often under-estimate the young cock birds because they don't start to show the adult male display patterns until after they moult, and often it takes a second moult to bring them to full display. Young hens show the width of face that is so desirable quite early and often we hear breeders saying that their young hens are better than their young cocks. You will usually find that the story changes as the birds get older. Maybe there is another important feature - temperament. I believe this can be inherited just like other show features, and we should select for that feature just as carefully as we select for show points. The calm bird that is even a little bit bold and ready to come to the front of the cage will give itself every chance of beating other birds with stronger show points. The bird stands straight and shows every feature to advantage. How can a judge award success to a bird running all over the floor, or somersaulting around the perches? Naturally the judge will try to persuade every bird to give of its best, but some birds are determined to conceal their best features. Many exhibitors will tell you about their training methods, and it is certainly true that a couple of our best exhibitors can get the best from every bird. How much easier that is if the bird is a 'natural shower' with an in- built steadiness. I had the best demonstration of how behaviour can be inherited years ago when I owned two springer spaniels. They had never been outside a suburban backyard, but when I took them for their first walk in the bush you would have sworn that I had trained them as gun dogs. They ran fifty metres in front, moving in sweeps from side to side, returning to me every few minutes, exactly as though they knew that their job was to startle prey out of hiding. Some months later I bought three pheasants and installed them in a run. My dogs, who were familiar with ordinary domestic fowls, went into fits of excitement at the smell, again as though they knew that these strong smelling birds were game to be hunted, not just feathered creatures of mild interest and amusement. These features must have been inherited as a result of long and careful selective breeding carried out by skilful dog breeders. It seems that we have the opportunity to develop strains of birds with very definite character traits. I for one will be attempting to do so, not only for showing purposes, but because I believe calm, bold birds are also the best breeders; the ones that tend their chicks most carefully, and almost have to be lifted off their chicks and eggs. These are the birds that can hatch out five and six chicks and will feed them all with enthusiasm. So, if I am right and these two things go together, temperament is the most important show feature for us to breed for, because it gives a foundation on which everything else can be built. Some Matings I'll start by quickly reiterating the main points of my first two sections of this article. Initially I presented a point of view that the pursuit of birds just because they were "English" in the hope that there was an easy way to breed winners would be a sure way to disappointment. If the birds do not carry the desired features
they will be no use to you whether they are "English" or not. Selection and planning will still be the only reliable way forward, and even then you need a fair slice of luck. I went on to say that features may be carried visibly or in a hidden form. I illustrated my explanation with examples from colour breeding. The inheritance of show features is determined in just the same way as the inheritance of colour. If you can understand colour inheritance you are on the way to understanding the inheritance of show features. The conclusion I would draw from all of this is that you should plan the whole of your breeding program basing your matings on close observation of your birds, good records concerning the breeding of your birds (and that doesn't mean having a few ring numbers. You need to know what features the parents had) and some idea of how the various show features may be inherited. You will not have any birds that carry all of the desired features, but you should set out a breeding plan so that wherever possible a desired feature is carried either visibly or in hidden form on both sides of each mating, and every feature is carried somewhere in the overall breeding plan. You won't be able to avoid having some matings that are not visually ideal, but every mating should be for a purpose. This article sets out to illustrate this idea using my own birds as examples. I can also give some indication of whether my plans have worked out as I hoped. One thing I am sure of is that it is better to have a plan than to try to breed winners without one. Pair Number One.. This pair set out to add greater length to an imported cock bird which was very strong in feather quality but short in body. He was mated to a greygreen hen which is very long and solid in body, but very poor in spots. Her mother was very well spotted and I know that she produces a number of off- spring carrying her body shape. She is also split for greywing and I know that the cock carried English clearwing. The mating resulted in six chicks; two greywing greygreen cocks and four normal light green hens. All of the chicks show the desired solid body shape and one of the hens has excellent feather around the head. The overall standard of the chicks is very high. Pair Number Two: This pairing set out to give greater impact to the family of birds descended from an imported Erie Lane bird. This bird is very stylish and has everything in proportion. He is what the English call a 'yellow feathered' bird. He was mated to an opaline skyblue hen with very strong spots and head features. The results have shown that the Lane bird produces chicks which are very like their father in stylishness. It remains to be seen if they will moult out with greater impact in feather, mask and spots. Pair Number Three: The imported birds from Mrs Angela Moss have produced a number of outstanding descendants. Last year the best daughter was mated back to her father and two outstanding cock birds were bred. The cock in pair three is one of those cocks. He has length, substance and balance, but he lacks showi-ness in his deportment. He was mated to a hen which had won best young normal in an open show and had all the presence and impact you would hope for. The young appear to have com- bined the best from both sides, but I'll have to wait until they moult through to judge their feather quality. I could go on to cover all my matings, but you will see what I mean when I say each mating has a purpose. I am always thinking of the potential for next breeding season. Other Matings Other matings this season have included two half brother / half sister matings from Eric Lane birds aimed at bringing to the surface any recessive features that may be carried in this family. I have also mated the Lane cock to his best daughter in the hope of breeding something even better. Most of the other matings have been aimed to combine more impact in the feather around the head, mask and spot areas of the birds with the style that the best birds have. It was obvious that the winning birds at national level are high impact birds and our best Tasmanian show birds did not have the necessary power in comparison.

MINUTES OF THE COMMITTEE MEETING HILLS BRANCH - B.S.N.S.W. (Inc.) Meeting held at Dural Country Club, Dural on Tuesday 14 th August 2012. MEETING OPENED: 8.04 pm Harry Charalambous presided. PRESENT: Ian Manton, Kathy Manton, Craig Buckingham, Ray Galbraith, Richard Abraham, Paul Brett, Santo Calabrese, Stuart Williams, Ross Selig, Peter Dodd and Harry Charalambous. VISITORS: Robert Mead Harry thanked the members for giving him the opportunity to be Chairman, and thanked and acknowledged Peter Dodd for the huge contribution he has made to the Branch over the past several years. Stuart accredited the success of Hills Branch to the work and commitment Peter has given to the Branch and its members. Suggested moving to 2 x 107cm LCD TVs with full HDMI on either side of stage, 2 x monitors (for auctioneer and computer personnel), speaker, cabling, headset & microphone, incl transport cases would cost $5.6k.
