Newf News 3rd Quarter 2016 page 3 C E L E B R A T E NEWFS BACK TO BACK REGIONAL SPECIALTIES APRIL 2 AND 3, 2016 On April 2nd and 3rd another successful back to back specialty weekend was hosted by the North Central Newfoundland Club in conjunction with the Northeast Wisconsin Dog Show Classic in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The club also hosted supported entries, Sweepstakes, and Veteran Sweepstakes on Thursday and Friday. Our theme again this year was Celebrate Newfs and we did just that. It was amazing to see so many wonderful and well-bred Newfoundlands displaying their beauty, soundness and wonderful temperaments. Each of our judges commented on how much they enjoyed their judging assignments and it was clear that each was thoroughly pleased with the entries. We couldn t have had a successful show without the efforts of the Northeast Wisconsin Classic Show Chairs, David Osborn, Ellen VandenAvond, Laura VandeVen, Karleen Cole, and Jane Lohmeyer. Their assistance, cooperation and guidance were invaluable. A huge thank you to all of them! Saturday s Sweepstakes judge was Dale Hafner. His Best in Sweepstakes was the lovely 15-18 month puppy bitch Anchorbay s Because She Can. Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes, from the 12-15 month class, was Seabrook s Slam Dunk at Kirenska who was also the Reserve Winner s Dog. Both of these youngsters have very promising futures ahead of them. Best in Veteran Sweepstakes was the Over 8- Under 9 Year class winner, GCh. Brookside s Super Sport Monte Carlo. He showed his heart out and made exhibitors, judges and the audience smile from ear to ear. He s not getting older, he s getting better! The breed classes were judged by Ms. Christie Martinez. She awarded the handsome Shadrack s Aim For the Fences Winner s Dog from the Bred By Exhibitor class. Anchorbay s Because She Can, the Best in Sweepstakes winner, was awarded Winner s Bitch and Best of Winners from the Bred By Exhibitor class.

Newf News 3rd Quarter 2016 page 4 The top prize of the day, Best of Breed was presented to the good looking Seabrook This Is It Pouch Cove and Best of Opposite Sex was presented to GCh. Castanewf s Angels Disguise who along with her handler went on to take a third place in the Working Owner Handler Group --- impressive job for this young lady who just recently returned to the ring from motherhood duties. The AKC Select Dog was Ch. Breakwater s Olde Towne Brew. The AKC Select Bitch was Ch. Sent Djons Zoe My Queen For Seabrook. In addition these two were also the NCA Award of Merit recipients. Veteran Dog went GCh. Timbermist s Jaquist Bosco. He showed like a trooper and we could see how much he enjoyed being back in the ring. He was a pleasure to watch. Sunday we were thrilled to have Cindy Wingfield as our Sweepstakes judge. She awarded Best Puppy in Sweepstakes to Seabrook s Slam Dunk at Kirenska from the 12-15 month class. Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes was presented to Anchorbay s Because She Can from the 15-18 month class. It was a reverse performance from Saturday with both vying for the top honors. Best Veteran in Sweepstakes was again awarded to the Over 8- Under 9 Year class winner GCh. Brookside s Super Sport Monte Carlo. He had a wonderful time in the ring both days. Next up were the breed classes presided over by Ms. Diane Anderson. Winner s Dog was from the Open Black class, Mainland Anchorbay Now I Know My ABC s. Reserve Winner s Dog was Seabrook s Slam Dunk at Kirenska. Both of these young men are wonderful representatives of the breed. Ms. Anderson chose HayTee Journey s Written in the Web from the Open Black class as her Winner s Bitch and Best of Winners. Reserve Winner s Bitch was from the Bred By Exhibitor class, HayTee & Journey s Honesty is the Best Policy Turftide. These girls represented excellent breed type and were both lovely. Ms. Anderson awarded Best of Breed to the impressive Ch. Darbydale s This Is How We Roll and Best of Opposite Sex to the lovely Ch. Sent-Djons Zoe My Queen For Seabrook. The AKC Selects and NCA Award of Merit recipients were Ch. Woodside s Moon Goddess and GCh. Topshelf s Eye of the Hurricane who entered the Breed ring as the winner of the Veteran Dog class. It was great to see the Veteran Dog show lights out and the Select Bitch strut her stuff as she and her handler went on to win the Working Owner Handler Group.

Newf News 3rd Quarter 2016 page 5 Barbara Wagner, and Jenny Thompson for manning the brown bag and silent auction tables. Lastly we would like to thank everyone who donated items that contributed to a very successful and fun fundraiser for the club. All in all it was a very successful four days of shows with majors all four days and of course.snow on Saturday!!! We would like to thank all who entered, worked and supported the events of the weekend to make this a successful specialty. We would especially like to thank Cathy Hartke for her spearheading and coordination of the fabulous and functional trophies. We also want to thank Brooke Beck, Karen Moore, A huge thank you to our Sweepstakes judges, Dale Hafner and Cindy Wingfield. Both did a great job and know that the exhibitors were very appreciative of your soft hands, patience and keen eye for a good dog. We loved having you! Lastly I (Carla) want to thank Julie Siefert. She did the bulk of the organizing, coordinating, ordering, etc., not to mention setting up the raffle and silent auction tables when I was delayed on Saturday morning due to snow. Thank you Julie! Newf News 3rd Quarter 2016 page 7 Newf-Nic Picnic! Newfs and their people spent a summer day at Half Day Forest Preserve in Vernon Hills, Illinois. We were joined by prospective members who seemed peased to meet others who are not at all put off by the size of their dogs or their drool and fur. There was a quorum for the General Membership Meeting. In addition to the usual club business, new board members were elected. More information will be presented to the membership when the minutes become available. Members and their dogs who completed titles during 2015 were congratulated. The handler and dog teams who earn these titles show skill and determination. We had a wonderful pot-luck lunch and raffle. Due to the heat of the day most of our time was spent relaxing in the shade with a little water for wading. Thanks to Al Williams for cooking, to Cissy Sullivan for taking photos and everyone who helped with set up, donating raffle prizes, buying tickets and cleaning up at the end of the day. John Mertens, Picnic Chair

Newf News 3rd Quarter 2016 page 10 Water Practice We are fortunate to have two NCNC members providing other club members with water practice sites. Les Morris writes: I will again be willing to host those interested in water rescue training at "the world's worst beach" this summer in Antioch, IL. The beach is a rip-rap seawall due to wave action on the lake. There are a few tie-outs on the hill retaining wall for when you are stewarding. You can also bring your own crate. There is a community dog wash after swimming. There is parking on the street, just nose into the fence. For those who haven t tried rescue training, it s fun, but it takes patience since we work the pups one at a time with everyone acting as stewards as necessary for each exercise until all dogs have worked the exercises they need that day. The usual start time is about 9:30-10:00 am on Sundays and last as long as needed to give every pup their turn. It takes a minimum of 6 people to make the sessions useful. I have email addresses for those who have trained in the past. If you are new, call or email me so you get the notices. lamorris11@hotmail.com or 847-226-7009. For club members further north there is an excellent site in Shiocton, Wisconsin. Kathy & Steve Van Wie work with the YMCA Camp Shioc to allow training at their facility. The Van Wies can be reached at 920-757-9709 or moonsailnewf@new.rr.com. "Drowning victims" are needed to help with training. Victims wait in the water so the Newfs can practice rescuing them. This is an excellent way for beginners to learn about water work and a fun way to spend time with Newfs and your fellow club members. Remember before planning a practice session please contact the Van Wies or Les to ask about dates available and rules for the sites.
