Dog Daily The health app for your dog. Email Allows you to track your dog s weight, poop, Password and quality of life. Login Sign Up Giving you piece of mind, knowing that your dog is not only happy, but healthy. Forgot Password?

THE BEGINNING People love their dogs. They treat them like children. They spoil them. They are patient with them through potty-training. They care for them in their old age. But a dog can t tell you how he feels or what he needs. He can t open the door and take himself for a walk. Having a dog is a huge responsibility. So I started wondering how people manage this responsibility. How do people handle all the information relating to their dogs. With so much attention and priority put on their dogs, there is a lot of information to keep track of. While these people are busy with daily commitments and with the growth of accessible technology, one can assume that dog owners would want all their dog s information in one place, at their fingertips; making it easier to best manage their dog s life, health, and overall well-being. ASSUMED NEEDS weight tracking medications contacts allergies poop tracker medication reminders vet visits food quality of life scale vaccine records vet bills schedule

THE INTERVIEWS - 7 DOG OWNERS I love my dog and taking care of her is part of [the responsibility]. Part of the family. How do I know if my dog is healthy?...like having a baby The vet said [my dog] was gaining weight. Unconditional love

AFFINITY MAPPING COMMONALITIES AMONG INTERVIEWS Growing up, had family dog, but with minimal responsibility See dog as part of the family Bigger responsibility than expected Defensive when questioned about frustrations - dog is worth it Made life adjustments or changes to best care for dog Want the best for their dog Weight Gain Anxiety about dog s health. Unexpected illness. Willingness to care for dog despite any medical issues Keep information in file folder Keep related reminders on phone Often forget to give medications

PERSONA - PRIMARY Katrina 8 years old Divorced Seattle, Washington Design Director BEHAVIORS & HABITS -Very passionate about her job. -Lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment which she owns. -Likes to travel and see the world. -Has two small dogs named Bobby and Bandit, which she adopted from rescue organizations. -Occassionally fosters dogs. SCENARIOS & FRUSTRATIONS -Adopted her first dog with her ex-husband. Adopted second dog after their divorce. -Wanted a dog because she felt like it would help her and her ex get ready to have a baby. -First dog, Bandit is now years old and has to take medication daily. -Second dog, Bobby is 6 years old and has food allergies, so he has a special diet. -Did a lot of reserch before adopting first dog. Wanted a slightly older dog who was house-trained. -Wanted to adopt from a rescue because it was important to her to give a dog who had a hard beginning of life, a good end of life. NEEDS & GOALS -People often tell Katrina to put-down Bandit, but the vet thinks Bandit is still a happy dog, despite his health problems. -She consults the scale when he s having a bad day, but doesn t have an easy way to keep track of it. -Because of Bobby s food allergies, she worries about his health and making sure he doesn t eat anything that could make him sick.

PERSONA - SECONDARY Tyler 7 years old Single Chicago, Illinois Ad Sales BEHAVIORS & HABITS -Lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment, which he rents. -Works a 9-5p job that he enjoys, but it is not his dream job. -Passionate about music. Plays the guitar for fun. -Has a dog named Ralph, who he got from a shelter on a whim. -Loves playing soccer and being outdoors. Very social and outgoing. SCENARIOS & FRUSTRATIONS -Had a fmaily dog growing up, but had minimal responsibility. -Always wanted a dog of his own and recently decided that he was ready for the responsibility. -Impulsive decision. Did not do much research. -Stable in his job and comfortable with himself and where he is in his life. -He still goes out after work and on weekends, but less often. and he doesn t stay out as late. He prefers activities outdoors, where he can bring Ralph. -Having a dog is more responsibility than he anticipated, but he thinks Ralph is worth it. -He worries about leaving Ralph at home alone for long periods of time, but the cost of regular dog day care and dog walkers add s up quickly. NEEDS & GOALS -He often forgets to give him monthly medications like Heartworm and Flea & Tick. Doesn t have a good way to remind himself. -Keeps Raph s records in a file folder that the vet gave him, but he s not sure where to keep it since he doesn t need to access it regularly. -The vet told him that Ralph was gaining weight, because Tyler was feeding him too much. -He worries about his ability to keep Ralph healthy.

PERSONA - LATER Sarah 4 years old Married Los Angeles, California High School Teacher BEHAVIORS & HABITS -Mom to young kids. Ned is year old and Amelia is 4 years old. -Husband works in the film industry with an unpredictable schedule. -Has a large labradoodle named Bumble Bee. Named by daughter, Amelia. -Her and husband have a weekly date night. -She likes to take the dog on long walks with her husband and kids. SCENARIOS & FRUSTRATIONS -Wanted a dog because she felt like a dog was an important part of having a family. -Bought house with yard after daughter was born, so chose a big dog. -Did a lot of research and wanted a breed that was hypo-allergenic. Went to a breeder. -Sarah and her husband share the responsibility, but his schedule changes often so sometimes she handles most or all of the responsibility; and vice versa. -Can become easily overwhelmed with kids and a dog. NEEDS & GOALS -Husband keeps reminders on his phone for giving Bumble Bee her medications, but sometimes isn t around or available, so it gets forgotten or done late. -Keeps vet information and dog-related contacts in phone, but can be hard to find among other contacts and in multiple apps. -Likes having all information for the dog on her phone, but wants it to be easier to find and more readily available. Currently all paperwork kept in file folder in home office. -Sarah wants an easier way to share, update, and delegate the responsibility of Bumble Bee depending on her and her husband s schedules.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS Overall, there are no apps that truly meet the user s need to track their dog s health. There are some pet apps that address the need to store information, set reminders, and track weight, but these have not been updated in years and lack sophistication in design. As a secondary analysis, I looked at apps for new moms to track the health of their baby. Multiple Profiles Multiple Photos Reminders Schedule Store Information Health Tracking Comments Pet Phone (ios) Track vet appointments. User can store information relating to vet contacts, appointments, medications, and allergies Weight tracking with graph. Design is simple and clear. This app seems to best address user needs, but is limited in it s features. No option to set reminders. Pet Minder (ios) User can add custom categories and add photo with a note - Very limited. Daycare category. Input date and description. No calendar. User can add custom categories and add photo with a note - Very limited. Heartworm and Flea & Tick categories. Simple text log of date last given with option to add reminder. Design is unsophisticated. App has simple user flow: add date, description, photo and reminder. Info can be stored in categories. Listed by date, similar to Notes app Pet Diary (ios) Memories feature: Add photo and description. With paid upgrade. Only medications with frequency, start date, and additional notes. Add weight, listed by date. Design is very cheesy. Very limited features. Reminders require paid upgrade. Pet Diary (Android) Alarm feature: add any event with reminder. No calendar. Diary feature. Add any notes. Diary entry listed by date. Diary feature. Option to input weight. Diary entries listed by date. Design is simple, but layout has odd proportions. Positve user reviews. Only features: Alarms and Diary. Sprout (ios) Memories feature: Select from list of milestones and add photo Store medical records, vaccinations, and doctor visits. Track feeding/nursing/pumping, sleeping/napping, diapers, and growth. All health categories are charted on individual graphs. Design is simple and profile page layout like a newspaper. Charted information is very clear. Does not appear to offer option for reminders. Baby Bundle (ios) Doctor check-ups and vaccination schedule. Store medical records, vaccinations, and doctor visits. Track feeding/nursing/pumping, sleeping/napping, and diapers Simple log with entries sorted by date. Growth tracker with graph. Design is clean and easy to navigate. Focus seems to be primarily on tracking growth and health. Does not appear to offer option for reminders.

CARD SORTING

CARD SORTING Card Sorting was very informative and helped to steer the MVP in the right direction. I made a lot of assumptions after interviews about which pain points were most important, so the initial MVP features focused on setting reminders for medications and storing records, for vet visits, vaccinations, etc. In addition to a very basic weight tracker. Prior to card sorting, I was concerned that this MVP didn t offer enough unique features which would give the app a reason for being or encourage users to regularly return to the app. My concerns were proved correct during card sorting. When discussing the overall concept of the app with users, it seemed they were less frustrated with using the default Reminders app or setting reminders through their calendar than I anticipated. Of the intial MVP, users seemed most interested in the weight tracker. As I explained all of the features I had considered, users appeared most interested in the features related to tracking their dog s health. They felt there were no defaul apps that allowed them to easily track and manage this information. It was after this stage of the research and development process that I shifted the MVP to focus on the health tracking features.

THE PROBLEM Dog owners need an easy, accesible way to track their dog s health because they have difficulty managing or worry about their ability to maintain their dog s health and well-being. USER GOALS WEIGHT TRACKER: Track and manage dog s weight. Easily look back on weight entry log in order to share with vet. POOP LOG: Worried about what your dog s poop means in relation to their health? Log poop based on size, color, and consistency. Add photos in order to share with vet, at times of concern. QUALITY OF LIFE Track your dog s quality of life, in the event of teriminal illness, long-term medical issues, or old age. Set recurring reminders for all features.

MVP None of the users had an easy way to manage and track their dog s health. Common pain points expressed by users related to weight gain and anxiety over their dog s health. The MVP would have a simple profile with name, age, breed and multiple photos. The dog s name would be the only information required to create a profile. Dog s profile page would feature graphs with charted information each relating to the following: : Add weight, set healthy weight range, and set recurring reminders to add to log. Poop log: Add poop information based on size, shape, consistency, and color, with option to add a photo. Set recurring reminders to add to log. scale: Add score and set recurring reminders to add to log. Later features could include setting medication reminders, adding records such as vet visits and vaccinnation records; managing schedule with multiple users, storing related contacts such as vet, dogwalker and ER. In addition to a more in-depth profile.

Overall look is easy to understand. User s asked questions and wanted confirmation about missing visual designs, but seemed to understand regardless of missing graphics and photos. CHALLENGES One user questioned the need to show multiple photos on profile page. I removed this scroll through photo feature and updated the main photo with the option to click through multiple photos, like Profile photos in Facebook. Some users questioned the need for all the information requested in the Add Dog page did not relate or apply to features. I removed much of this, keeping it very simple. One user felt the ADD DOG box on the profile menu was distracting and could be more subtle. I removed this design and added a simple + in the lower right corner.

One user questioned the need for the icon buttons on the profile page and felt this was confusing. User suggested having the graphed carts directly on the Profile page. This would eliminate one step for the user.

USABILITY TESTING Task Scenario: Your dog is getting old and having difficulty getting around, people are telling you to put him down, but you re sure that is the right decision, use Dog Daily to help you make the best decision for your dog s well-being. add to log bad good Hurt 4 5 Hunger Hydration Hygiene Happiness Mobility More Good Days than Bad cancel Version Version 4 5 4 5 4 5 4 5 4 5 4 5 save Hurt Hunger Hydration Hygiene Happiness Mobility More Good Days than Bad Notes Add Hurt Hunger Hydration Hygiene Happiness Mobility More Good Days than Bad Notes Add Adequate pain control & breathing ability is of top concern. Trouble breathing outweighs all concerns. Is the pet s pain well managed? Can the pet breathe properly? Is oxygen supplementation necessary? SUCCESSES Users successfully accomplished task, once they had better understanding of the scale being used. Users seemed intrigued by this feature. CHALLENGES Some users were unclear or unfamiliar with the Scale and wanted more information or initial explanation. I was concerned about adding too much text to this page and therefore left out explanations of different categories. Expecially because once users understood the purpose of this, they would unlikely need explanation of the categories more than a few times. As a solution, I added an information icon to each category to explain if need be. Also shown on main page. Some users thought the boxes for scale may be hard to click. I updated this to a slider function.
