Ohio s Amphibians By; Riley, Jacob, and Chloee Newt One of Ohio s state amphibians is the Newt. The Newt can grow to be from two six inches long. They have long slender bodies with short legs and long tales, and the Newts skin can be toxic when it feels threatened. They only eat insects and larva, but they can lay 400 eggs on submerged plants and rocks. Bullfrog The American Bullfrog is Ohio s state Amphibian. It is a carnivore. It grows 3.6 to 6 in.(9.1 to 15 cm.) in body length and its legs add 7 to 10 in. (18 to 25 cm.). The average life span in the wild for this aquatic Bullfrog is 7 to 9 years. Salamander Salamanders are amphibians and are related to frogs and toads, but they do not make themselves known with loud calling like other amphibians. Because of their secretive nature and nocturnal lifestyle, salamanders do not easily disclose their location. They love dark, wet places, often in deep woods, which is one reason why finding one of these slippery critters can be a real challenge.
