PINZGAUER & PINZ²YL GENOOTSKAP/SOCIETY Nuusbrief / Newsletter Volume 19 / Issue 19 Oktober / October 2016 B2B Pinzgauer & PinZ²yl Stud Mike and Tshelo Matsimela decided to expand their Jersey dairy in Kalfontein which was established in 2007. Their love for livestock was just so great that they decided to venture into the ZZ2 mentorship program by opening a Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl studs in 2015. They say this was their continuous quest into livestock farming. They say their daughters Tshego and Kholofelo also played a special role in choosing the breeds as they had individual preference for each breed love at first sight. They have always preferred to work with medium framed cattle which are hardy, robust and bring out the best out of the worst situation. The couple say that their objective with the two studs is to further raise the profile of these magnificent breeds that they can continue to take their rightful place in the cattle industry international and locally. They are also participating and competitive breeders of the society as they are currently working on their stock so that in future they can take part in shows in order to learn and improve their infant livestock experience. They are grooming their daughters to know that if they really want to be farmers they must give up to the latest fashions, new cars and all the swag. They want their two daughters to know how to be responsible, to let them literally put food on the table and learn how much effort a life worth entails. They say farming is generally tough and livestock farming has become even tougher enterprise to Tshelo Matsimela posing with their PinZ²yl herd. Mike Matsinela with their Pinzgauer herd. venture into, the severe drought, forever increasing input costs, stock theft, disease and many other challenging factors. However, they say it is exciting to be a livestock farmer as you get to see the new born calf, how nature prepares a heifer to be a mother, the social skills of the cattle and how natures artistry can be life of contradictions, to survive they will have to forge partnership with the gurus of the industries, hence they will continue to be grateful for being part of the ZZ2 Livestock family. B2B Studs is one of the growing studs we have, they are forever willing to learn and rise to the occasion. Even though they haven t been showing they have attended The Bloemfontein Show and The Jacaranda Show 2016 and we appreciate their support and attendance at the Societies events. We are so happy to have member like Mike and Tshelo Matsimela and we wish them all the best in their future plans to expand their studs and dairy business.

He has made us proud, he started working here when he was 21 years in 2004, today he is 33 years old with a wife and two children. What amazed us more is that during his annual leave this year in September, he managed to build himself a good house at Giyani for his family. Unlike others, he has used his leave very fruitful. Congratulations to him and we hope that he continues to progress in life. Thomas Mathebula s new house in Giyani On the 27 th of October 2016 Henk Els and his son, Henco, from the Chenaco Pinzgauer Stud came to Mooketsi from Pretoria to visit their cattle. Even though Henk is most of the time in Saudi Arabia, he always finds time to come and look after his cattle s wellbeing. We have great appreciation for his efforts. NUWE AANSTELLING / NEW APPOINTMENT Frank Seyane, our Head of Livestock Safety & Protection Department, was appointed this year on the 1 st of August 2016 at the Cattle Division. He has been working for 9 years as security personnel for ZZ2. He says he was inspired by the leadership skills and knowledge that the ZZ2 Livestock General Manager possess. We welcome him to the family and wish him all the best. We hope that he continues to add more value to ZZ2, especially ZZ2 Cattle division in particular. COMMUNICATION Working in an environment like ZZ2 Livestock requires extensive and direct command, we find ourselves in an environment with 7 languages i.e. Afrikaans, Sepedi, English, Xitsonga, Tshivenda, Shona and Ndebele; three nations (South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique). This can be an advantage for one to develop as multilingual or equally this can be a communication barrier for effective community. To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. Tony Robbins. Also you find that you have people who understand better and faster than the others. For these reasons one has to ensure clear lines of communication and reporting. This means we have to set out who accounts from who, all the way from a general worker to the General Manager this will ensure progress in performance of work given to all particular employees. Studies have revealed that Workplace communication is very important to companies because it allows companies to be productive and operate effectively. Employees can experience an increase in morale, productivity and commitment if they are able to communicate up and down the communication chain in an organization. Employees feel empowered if they are able to have upward communication. This type of communication is when information flows upward in an organization and usually consists of feedback. If bosses or managers are able to listen to employees and respond, this leads to an increase in employee job satisfaction.
Communication is often given less attention, good communication is essential for success on today s multi-national farms like ZZ2, what we do here on our farm is that if you Afrikaans speaking and want to talk with Tsonga speaking person or Sepedi speaking and want to give orders to a Ndebele speaking; you must call an interpreter to avoid miscommunication as it can affect productivity and lead to a double job. Again all personnel must respect each other, because if you undermine your subordinates you will end up being misled, remember no man knows all as we work together we must share ideas and give reports. One of my managers Jacob Oosthuizen will find himself speaking Sepedi, Tsonga and Shona in one sentence just to get the message through. At some point one can diagnose an individual saying they fail to adhere to orders when in fact the individual didn t understand the command but just said yes from fear. These are some other factors we should look at in our organization to improve effectiveness. Poor communication comes with a high price tag. It can also lead to skilled people leaving the farm. One simple thing that has really makes a big difference is saying good morning and finding out how your team is doing before starting with work of the day; having comfortable and happy team is important. We need to connect and know that it is impossible to multi task; we have to listen to each other s concerns, allow dialogue, and build trust and loyalty. The Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl Society have also played its role in terms of successful communication with stakeholders continuing to strive for highest possible client value, and continuing nurturing and developing interactive and exciting platforms of communication like Facebook, Newsletter, emails and other channels and we hope the society continue to improve communication with members on all facets of the breeds affairs. We are grateful for that. Happy Farming. Masipa Asser Mantsho ZZ2 Livestock Division Email : grootboom@zz2.biz
BREEDERS QUESTIONS / TELERS VRAE: 1. Why is bull selection so important? Bulls have more than 50% of influence on the herds genetics. We should ensure that we don t downgrade our genetics at all times, the bloodline is also important. That is why the Herd Book and Breed Standards in Appendinx B forbid a bull to breed Pinzgauer cows as it will downgrade to the generation below it s mother whilst we are striving for improved and better genetics. 2. Why is my cow s status on Logix NFR (Not for registration)? This might be for various reasons where the breeder violated the rules of the Herd Book and Breed Standards i.e.: o Multi Sire on Pinzgauer o If the first calving for female animal is before 17 months or after 39 months. o If the ICP (Inter Calving Period) exceeds 790 days for a Pinzgauer female and 570 day for a PinZ²yl female the progeny can not be registered. o If the animal is not inspected between 12 and 36 months or accepted into the Breed Standard.
