LCKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Officers: LINDA BERGSTROM President JILL OTTO Vice President KRIS SMITH Secretary PATTY MENDES Treasurer Members of the Board: Sara Borok Cathy Wright Debbie Tull Next meeting: Tuesday, March 20th at the the Adorni Center (Address is at bottom of page) The Lost Coast H O W L E R March 2018 Editor: Tina Moulton www.lostcoastkc.org www.facebook.com/lostcoastkennelclub PO Box 6808, Eureka, CA 95502-6808 President s Corner Work continues toward our summer shows, and through the efforts of the Event Team members and other folks (hi! You re the best! You rock!), a lot of things are coming together nicely. We still have some tasks that need volunteers. Wait! Don t run away! The big jobs are covered; you re safe! But if you can spare a bit of time between now and the show and most especially during the show and the days immediately surrounding it we would love to hear from you! To find out more, come to any club meeting, or to any Event Team meeting; or you can contact Show Chair Cathy Wright (cathlynwright@hotmail.com) or myself (lcbergstrom@gmail.com) and we ll hook you up. A few of the awards still need sponsors. Contact Trophy Chair Beverly Chang (707-764- 3146 or redwoodshadows@gmail.com) to find out which are still un-funded and what amounts are associated with each. Or if a personal sponsorship is out of reach or doesn t suit you, you can donate any amount you choose to go toward any awards sponsored by LCKC (rather than by an individual). No amount is too small! The easiest way is to send a check and a note saying what it s for to LCKC at P.O. Box 6808, Eureka, CA 95502-6808. Join Us! Everyone is welcome! BOARD MEETING 6:30 PM REGULAR MEETING 7:OO PM Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, alternating between the Adorni Center in Eureka 1011 Waterfront Drive, in odd numbered months and at The Clubhouse at The Meadows, 2520-90 Hubbard Lane, Eureka in even numbered months. No meeting in December. And as always, keep an eye on LCKC e-mails as they roll into your Inbox for more information, specific updates and requests. Okay! After all that begging and cajoling, I feel like I owe all of you something, so here: Go Google DOGS IN ELK You re welcome. Linda LCKC_March_2018 1

Club Activities The annual HumDog Expo was a success once again. Quite a few LCKC members participated with breed booths, general helping, and a special thank you to Chris Irvin for announcing the Parade of Breeds and Jill Otto for being our ring steward. Thanks also to our members who helped demonstrate some of the fun things that can be done with a dog - Cathy Wright, Beverly Morgan Lewis, Jill Otto, Deb St. Myers, Sara Borok, Pat Johnson, and Tricia Morgan just to name a few! Any names left off are unintentional. If folks have photos to share from the expo, please send them to the LCKC email address and we will get them in the next newsletter.. LCKC_March_2018 2

Have you heard? From Sandra Gould: At Greater Los Angeles Scentwork Club trial, March 10, Tippet entered ten events and qualified in all. He earned his container, advanced title, which earned him his Scentwork Advanced title (meaning he has advanced title in all four elements: container, exterior, interior and buried). He earned his handler discrimination advanced title, too. He is the first PWD in the U.S. to have earned these titles. From Debbie Tull and Beth Rogers: Zip was stylin in her new Iggy Collars coursing lead at the Shasta Kennel Club AKC Fast Cat. Her fastest run of 29.56 mph ranks her currently as #3 All American Dog for 2018! From Roxy Crawford: We would like to introduce 'Aqueus Dancing Pines' aka 'Scout' to the group! She s a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever from Davis, CA and has been a great addition to our family. We look forward to pursuing lots of different performance events in her future! From Beverly Morgan Lewis: On March 10 at the American Bloodhound Club's trial in Santa Rosa, after a bit of a dry spell, Druid finished his PACh2. That means he's completed the requirement for his agility championship twice. He did this in just a little over a year from his first championship. Now we're going to try for a Grand Champion. Have you heard? From Kimber Gradin: Liberty Run's Journey of Zeeva CD RA CGCA TKN NDD earned her 3 qualifying legs, each with a First place, for her CD Title at the Lost Coast Kennel Club Rally Obedience Trials in January. From Rachel Cyr: We finished our AKC Championship with 3 5 point major wins! From Nick and Patty Mendes: Shasta Kennel Club, Anderson, CA LCKC_March_2018 4

Have you heard? From Tina Moulton: At the Shasta Kennel Club Shows in Anderson, CA this month, Raya - GCH Rovente s Ray of Light at Jo-Na-Da went BOB and OHBOB all 4 days, with a OHG4 on Saturday as well. That Bronze Grand is soooo close! Little Bisous - Jo-Na-Da s Black Cat Kisses finally broke her long reserve streak by going Winners Bitch three out of four days. Saturday was vintage dress up day. I took it seriously ;-) From Marilyn Cottrell: Bayley did her first Scentwork trial in Ferndale! We learned a lot. She now has a qualifying leg in Containers and 1 in Exteriors and placed 2nd in Exteriors. We were happy about it, all in all, and plan to do it again! From Susan Hutchison: My golden retrievers, Tessa and Jag, have been recognized by AKC as an "Achiever Dog." Love those Golden Kids! Also, Jag earned his Excellent Fast Title with first place finishes at the MacKenzie Cascade Dog Fanciers Agility Trial in Albany, OR in February LCKC_March_2018 5

Have you heard? From Sara Borok: Hildy got her first BOB and another BOS at the Anderson show. Karma picked up 2 more selects. From Kris and Bayard Smith: People often ask, What do you with Scottish Deerhounds? The answer is, now that they aren t allowed to hunt deer, we race, lure course, and show. We did all three in the last three weekends. On March 10 and 11 we them to Redding for LGRA straight racing one day, and NOTRA oval racing on the next. Opal and Colin participated in a field of five dogs. Opal squeezed out a win for both meets. Next was lure coursing, in Oakley. Opal and Colin ran in a field of three Deerhounds, and came second and third. The winner went on to capture Best in Field. They both had an extra run, as they each went back to run with another Deerhound to qualify them to compete. Last weekend it was conformation showing for Opal and Neida on Saturday and Sunday of the new Shasta Kennel Club cluster. Saturday, Opal took a Best Opposite, and Neida got the bitch point. Sunday, it was Best of Breed for Opal, and another winners point for Neida. Everyone went home happy. LCKC_March_2018 6
