Character Study Class Checklist, Skills and Strategies to Assess, Unit 2 Name Readers make predictions about character problems and confirm or revise them. Readers know characters will have problems and keep track of action leading up to the problem until the end. Readers make sure details and scenes fit together by rereading if meaning breaks down. Readers use traits and feelings to describe their characters and notice when characters act out of character or in surprising ways. Readers listen to partners and add more or new thinking about characters and ask and answer questions. Readers share their opinions about characters and refer to text that shows why they have that opinion. Readers are prepared for partnerships; jots on feelings; important parts; change; and lessons learned. Readers use read aloud to show the traits and feelings of their characters and role play to show actions. Copyright 2010-2014 by the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators and Oakland Schools. 1

Sample of Possible First Grade Character Traits 2

Disney Pixar's For the Birds Tracking Character Traits and Feelings using Actions Chart Traits typically stay with a character where feelings change throughout the story. The first two rows will be prepared from work the previous day. Or it could have been work from read aloud. Together the last row will be demonstrated in mini lesson. Little Birds Action Little bird on wire poking other little birds Little birds make fun Laugh Little birds squish together Little bird pokes big bird Little birds poke feet of big bird chanting for him to fall Little birds shoot off wire and land without feathers Traits Mean Rude Disrespectful Mean Rude Disrespectful Mean Rude Mean Rude Mean Cruel Fearful Feelings Angry Frustrated Annoyed Happy Silly Annoyed Frustrated Happy Happy Joy Surprised Embarrassed Big Bird Action Big bird honks and waves hello Big Bird flies over and sits in middle Big Bird flips upside down Big Bird sees little birds pecking feet and chanting Chants too Big Bird falls to ground Big Bird hands little bird a leaf for cover Traits Friendly Joyful Friendly Joyful Joyful Joyful Playful Playful Thoughtful Considerate Feelings Happy Happy Surprised Happy Dizzy Happy Silly Sorry It is not intended that second graders produce a chart to this sophistication. This is an example of a chart that could be coconstructed either during read aloud or mini lesson or share time that would help readers see how all of this work looks across a complete story. Readers could map actions, traits and feelings following one character in less complex ways. Using post-its or a simple timeline drawn in a notebook (see lesson 8). 3

Partners Help Build Talk About Character to Think Deeper About Stories Ask who, what, when, where, how and why if needed Why would? and Would you? Share opinions about characters by telling others what they think about your character Jot ideas and gather thoughts before coming to partnerships Talk about the parts with strong emotion and important parts Catch character changes and compare jots Ask, What has my (your) character learned that will help me in my life? Role play scenes from stories Chart is created over the course of the unit, day by day, not at one sitting. 4

Jot Lot A parking lot for lots of jots!
