and Female Sale Saturday, December 3, 2016 1 p.m. At the Farm near Athens, AL With guest consignors McLean Red Angus Forbes Farm Smeenk Livestock

Welcome to our second production sale! After selling bulls and females this past February, Osborn Red Angus made the decision to gather the cattle together for a fall offering. We also decided to bring the sale to the farm outside Athens, AL. Since there are many fall calving herds in the southeast and other parts of the country, we have decided to set our annual sale date for the first weekend of December from now on. We hope that our past customers will continue to have trust in our program to furnish them with the kind of cattle that meet or exceed their expectations and that our new customers will find that our program and animals are the kind that will work for them, too. We are proud to offer a set of bulls and females that have been genetically designed and physically developed for efficiency, fertility and long term profitability with you, the customer in mind. Although the cattle industry is going through some changes, the Red Angus breed is in demand across the country, not only from first time cattle buyers, but also from lifelong cattlemen. Red Angus cattle have proven to be profitable, low maintenance, highly maternal, highly fertile, easy calving animals with quiet dispositions. They have also become a choice in the feedlot for their carcass value and marketability. We have always felt blessed and thankful to our Lord for allowing us to be a part of such a great breed of cattle and people. The sale will be broadcast live on dvauction.com and you will be able to bid from your home if you are unable to attend the sale. If you are unable to attend the sale or watch and bid through dvauction.com, just give us a call ahead of time and we will help you in selecting the best bull or female for your dollar. We thank you for taking time to review the offering in this catalog and we hope to see you at the farm outside of Athens, AL on December 3, 2016. Please do not hesitate to give us a call to answer any questions or help you find the bull or female to meet your needs. Osborn Red Angus Danny Osborn: 256-679-6307 Michael Osborn: 931-993-3654 www.osbornredangus.com Guest Consignors: McLean Red Angus: Jim McLean (770-595-3542) Osborn Red Angus has had the privilege of housing the McLean Red Angus herd here in Alabama for the past three years. The McLean cow herd has been integrated into our breeding program and all of the bulls and heifers offered in this sale under the JEM identification were born and raised here at Osborn Red Angus. McLean Red Angus has been raising Red Angus cattle for many years and the herd is well known, in the southeast and nationally, for breed leading genetics and quality animals. Forbes Farm: Terry Forbes (270-871-2128) The bulls and females offered in this sale under the FOR identification animals were born and weaned at Forbes Farm, Slaughters, KY. After weaning, they were grown at Osborn Red Angus together with the entire offering. Forbes Farm is a long time breeder of Red Angus cattle and is well known at the SERAA Grasstime Auction for the high quality animals that he has always consigned to that sale. Smeenk Livestock: Randy Smeenk (256-777-7257) Lots 10 and 14 are bulls being offered by Smeenk Livestock, a relatively new Red Angus breeder. These bulls were born and weaned at Smeenk Livestock and then delivered to Osborn Red Angus to develop. You will see more of Smeenk Livestock in future years.

Sale Day Vet William Berry, DVM Berry Animal Clinic, Ardmore, AL Catalog by Jane Adolph 815-244-5456 About us In North Alabama, our fall calves and cows have a tough road. The last couple of winters have been colder than average and extremely wet. The grass at this time of year is at its lowest nutritional level and the cows are asked to raise a calf as well as take care of themselves. Our cows winter on available pasture and hay. Our cows are not on a feed program at any time and the calves are not on creep feed at any time. You will find that our fall born calves, therefore, will have lighter weaning weights than you would find in our spring born calves. This does not mean that the fall calves are inferior to the spring born calves in any way. Using EPDs will give you the information to determine the animal s genetic performance potential. The coming two year old bulls were kicked out on grass in April and were then grazed on a small pearl millet lot from June til mid- August. After the middle of August, they were on summer grasses and about the first of October a small feed ration was added to their daily diet. These bulls are hard and strong and ready to go right to the breeding pastures. Our feed program, for developing the yearling bulls and females, consists of a TMR that includes forage material (alfalfa and/or Bermuda hay), mixed grains and a vitamin/mineral package. It is not a maximum growing ration, but rather a ration that allows for proper structural growth while allowing the animals to express growth rate without excess fat. The bulls and heifers are on the same ration, with the heifers receiving less quantity than the bulls. Our goal is to have animals that are fit and ready to enter a program anywhere in the country. Commercial s Lots 61 65 are commercial open Red Angus heifers that are ready to breed. Herd Builder Index (Reprinted with permission from Andras Stock Farm) Lot61 Lot62 Lot63 Lot64 Lot65 Lot 65 Commercial Heifer COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFER COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFER COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFER COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFER COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFER The Red Angus Association of America has always prided itself in providing the most accurate EPDs possible. However, we now find that there are enough problem areas for us, Andras Stock Farm, to not print the HerdBuilder (HB) Index. The basis for the HerdBuilder Index is STAY, HPG, CED, CEM, ADG, mature weight, Marbling, YG, and feed intake. Some causes for our concern with in the HB Index are: (1) The calculations are calculated for progeny that are 75% Red Angus, 25% Simmental...not 100% Red Angus. Some of the most important maternal functions, we depend on Simmental to bring (i.e. Milk production). (2) Feed intake calculation is an arbitrary figure. RAAA is only starting to collect and implement actual feed intake data. (3) (and most critical) CEM, CED, and STAY which are all crucial in formulating the HB Index are most problematic for us. The most affected group are those cattle that have Angus genetics (the foundation of our breed) in their pedigree. The RAAA is no longer able to obtain the necessary data (from the Canadian Angus Association sending down their black Angus animals) to properly evaluate the progeny of many high-use Angus sires, as we did just a couple of years ago. Just one example is an Angus sire that ranks #1 for daughters reported, with over 10,000 daughters on record. He is the Angus breed's #4 Pathfinder sire, and has the second-highest daughter qualification rate in the top 20 Angus sires, according to ABS Global. This particular sire's Stayability EPD is a -1 in the current RAAA EPD run. How can this be? According to Colorado State University, the RAAA can no longer obtain or use approximately 90% of this bull's calving ease observations or approximately 90% of his birth records (This information, in its entirety, was available and utilized in RA calculations just two years ago). This sudden data loss caused this particular bull's birth deviations to be 3 times worse than they originally were. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case for high-accuracy Angus sires. This poses a major problem, as we see it, for the HB Index. It would be logical to conclude that if some sires' HB Index is wrong due to loss of necessary data then the HB Index for all sires must likewise be incorrect. The Red Angus Association of America has acknowledged this data loss and is diligently working to rectify the situation. Obviously, our desire is to see a full correction come quickly. Until then, we have decided to leave the HB Index unpublished in our catalog. We will keep our focus fixed, because we are dedicated to providing our customers with the very best, established, and proven genetics to keep your profitability our top priority. 19
