July 30, 2008 tideline aquatics Newsletter Tideline Aquatics Store Hours Monday Friday 11am-7pm Saturday 10am-6pm Sundays 1pm-5pm POND OWNERS WARNING!! The water in your pond is HOT! Warmer water holds less oxygen. The ponds surface should be agitated heavily this time of year to prevent the suffocation of your fish from an oxygen crash. Consider also adding an airstone driven by a simple air pump for increasing the oxygen levels in your pond. A PEACEFUL NEW BARB FOR THE COMMUNITY FRESHWATER AQUARIUM PLANT SAFE TOO!! So often barbs get a bad rap as being fin nipping terrors when actually there are many peaceful barbs for the community aquarium. Another consideration this time of year especially is ph. Have you tested the ph in your pond water lately? With heavy afternoon thunderstorms comes a deluge of acidic rainwater. Have you tested the ph of the rainwater? The ph in our rainwater has been running around 6.0 with ZERO carbonate hardness (KH). This means that if enough of this acidic rainwater accumulates in your pond, the ph can suddenly crash leading to the death of all of your beautiful pond fish! Test the ph on your pond water TODAY and buffer it up if needed. Use a buffer product that will also raise the carbonate hardness (KH). A strong carbonate hardness accompanied with good aeration will get your fish through this tough time of year. For best results, test the pond water ph about once per week and buffer it if needed. FALSE EIGHT-BANDED BARB / OCTOZONA BARB (EIRMOTUS OCTOZONA) The Octozona Barb is another example of an extremely peaceful barb species. This wild collected barb from Thailand is even safe for aquarium with live plants. As a matter of fact, they prefer a well planted tank as this fish is easily intimidated by large and/or bold aquarium companions. Preferring soft water with a ph of 6.5-7.5 and a temperature in the range of 75-84 degrees, the Octozona Barb is not too picky. This fish will accept dry foods but the addition of either frozen or freeze-dried food is suggested to keep this fish fat and healthy. As with most schooling fish, we suggest purchasing at least three or more of these fish. This fish is a rare find in the aquarium hobby.

QUICK ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS Do I have to test the aquarium water? The only way you will know if the aquarium water is safe for aquarium fish is by testing the water. You can test it yourself or you can bring it to the store for testing. With the inexpensive cost of test kits compared with the investment you have made in your aquarium, testing the water at home at least once per month is suggested. Do I have to do water changes? The good news is that you do not have to break down the entire aquarium to consider it a water change. But, you should remove about 25% of the aquarium water at least once per month to reduce organic levels that accumulate in the aquarium. This is true of both fresh and saltwater aquarium. Remember, evaporation does not replace a partial water change. Only the water evaporates, all of the organics remain concentrated in the aquarium. Do I have to treat the tap water? There was a time when letting the aquarium water sit overnight made it safe for using in the aquarium. That is no longer the case! Tap water is now treated with Chloramines at the treatment facility. This is a bond of chlorine and ammonia that is more stable. Any water used in your aquarium or pond that is tap water must be treated with a conditioner that removes chlorine AND ammonia. Even simple top-off water should be treated before adding it to your aquarium. Why do I need an aquarium heater? Aquarium heaters are completely necessary unless you are keeping goldfish. An aquarium heater is needed to keep the water temperature stable. Fluctuations in temperature stress freshwater tropical fish and marine fish. When stressed, parasite diseases like ich and oodinium become active and will kill your fish! If you house temperature varies rapidly, the use of two aquarium heaters may be required. How long should my aquarium lights be on? First, aquarium lights should never be left on all the time! On average, running the aquarium lights 8-10 hours per day is suggested. This is also true in reef and planted aquariums. Have the light schedule match your schedule. Instead of having the lights on all day while you are at work, place the lights on a timer and have them come on an hour or two before you get home. The timer will then turn the lights off after 8-10 hours. This will also keep your fish, plants and invertebrates on a regular lighting schedule. Running the aquarium lights over 10 hours per day will cause outbreaks of problem algae like hair algae, diatom algae and green water. DON T MISS OUT ON THESE!! The hardy, brilliantly colored and usually expensive blue spotted jawfish have once again arrived at Tideline. If you have a peaceful marine aquarium, reef aquarium or even a nano aquarium, the blue spotted jawfish is the perfect addition. We usually have to sell this fish for $159.00 but we were able to get special pricing on a group of these fish allowing us to sell them for only $69.00!! Just print off the website coupon and bring home one of the most incredible jawfish available in our hobby!! Provide this fish with plenty of cover as they love to dig holes in and out of the rockwork and coral. Also, you will want your aquarium to be covered as jawfish are notorious jumpers!! JUST IN!!
