2018 Dog Guidelines: 201 Dog Project and Record Book: Complete this project and record book every year a dog project is taken. Get to know all aspects of dog care and welfare while keeping complete records of your experience as a dog owner. Use one project book each year, even if your dog is involved in more than one project and even if you have more than one dog. Appropriate for dogs that are family pets and for dogs that are used for show. Use this book with 201R Dog Resource Handbook. 201D You and Your Dog: Recommended as a first-year dog project and also as a complement to other dog projects. (Considered a General Project; will not take dog to the fair or have to do Skillathon on Super Saturday; but will have to have book graded on Super Saturday.) 201O Obedience: Covers beginning and advanced obedience training. 201S Showmanship: Learn the basics of dog showmanship. 201P Performance: Includes agility, drill team, and other performance events; like rally. 201W Working Dogs: Includes assistance dogs such as Pilot Dogs, Inc., Canine Companions for Independence, and other service dog organizations. All projects are included in one book; a Dog Resource Handbook is needed to complete each project listed. (At least one Resource Handbook is needed per family) General Guidelines for the Dog Project: 2018 Dog Registration and the 2018 Ashtabula County Dog Project Identification Form (side filled out by parent and member) and Vaccination/Health Certificate side must be filled out by the vet and be turned in by May 1, 2018 to the OSU Extension Office. On March 24, 2018 at 2:00pm at OSU Ext. Office there will an informational meeting for any members and parents, information about the 4-H Dog Project will be discussed. All dogs must be current on Vaccinations until August 11, 2018 and must have their rabies shot by May 1, 2018. The committee recommends the Kennel Cough Vaccine because your animal will be around others. Dogs must be six months old by Aug. 1 st 2018. 2

NO WOLF OF WOLF HYBRID WILL BE ALLOWED All Dog 4-H project members must take Obedience. All Dog projects will go through the Dog Skillathon on Saturday, July 14 th (except for 201D; which will be judged at general judging in the Expo Building). Please see Skillathon Sample Score Card for information on what to expect. Show levels: Obedience, Showmanship, Rally, and Agility (performance). - Beginner: first or second year showing a dog. - Intermediate: third and fourth year showing a dog. - Advanced: five or more years showing a dog. Clinics are for all dog project members. All 4-H Members must attend seven (7) of the dog clinics with their dogs. The first and third clinics are mandatory to attend, if a member does not attended they will not be eligible for Best Total Score awards (awards in each class will still be given). All clinics will be held at the fairgrounds in the Open Dairy Barn and will start at 6:30pm. All dog and handler teams will be evaluated at the first clinic. The evaluation will consist of several exercises to be performed by the team. These exercises will allow the species chair and trainers to determine if the member can safely handle the dog. If it is determined that a team cannot safely work together they may be dismissed from clinics. A dog which displays signs of aggression at any point throughout the clinics may be asked to leave for the day; repeat offenders* will be dismissed from clinics. *a dog displaying serious aggression may be dismissed from clinics for only one offence, as deemed appropriate by the species chair and trainers. DRESS CODE No flip flops or sandals, closed toe shoes must be worn. Shorts are permitted but must be no shorter than three inches above the knee. Shirts cannot be low cut. Long hair should be pulled back so as not to interfere with normal handling of the dogs. Any member or adult using foul language will be dismissed. 3

Equipment: Leash: a six foot leash made of leather or nylon is to be used in obedience and rally (no chain leashes or flexi leashes will be permitted) Collar: A chain slip collar is to be used for dogs training/showing in obedience and rally Under extreme circumstances, such as a medical problem, an alternative maybe requested. The final decision and approval is determined by the species chair and Extension Educator. For Agility: a tab lead or short leash and flat buckle collar are to be used during agility training. For the safety of the dogs, no dog shall be permitted on the agility course while being handled on a metal training collar or any other slip collar. For Showmanship: an appropriate show lead for the breed of dog (or breed which the dog most resembles). OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION 2018 Permission to Participate in Ohio 4-H Dog Activities Disclosure and Release of Claims I,, have chosen to participate in the Ohio 4-H Dog Program and its related dog activities. I understand that this participation will involve contact with dogs and may give rise to a risk of physical injury. I understand that participation in the 4-H Dog Program is strictly voluntary and is not a requirement for 4-H membership. I am aware that: 1. Dogs have a tendency to behave in ways that may result in injury to me or other persons in the immediate vicinity; 2. Dogs may react in an unpredictable way to unfamiliar environments, sounds, strange odors, sudden movements, unfamiliar objects, persons, dogs, or other animals; 3. I am to listen to adult volunteers, trainers, coaches, and judges when working with my dog(s) in group settings, and when around other dogs and 4-H members, and people; 4. Other participants in the 4-H Dog Program may fail to maintain control over their dogs or fail to act within their abilities, thus causing harm to me, my dog(s), other participants, volunteers, or spectators; 5. Other participants in an activity, event, or program may act in a negligent manner which otherwise may result in harm to me and/or my dog(s); 6. I should be aware of my dog s body language and stress indicators at all times while we are participating in 4-H activities; 7. I should be able to remove my dog from situations where he/she may respond in a reactive or aggressive manner; 8. If I cannot maintain control over a dog I am using for a 4-H project, I understand that I will not be able to use this dog for a 4-H project; and 9. If a dog I am using for a 4-H project has been or becomes aggressive toward other people and/or other dogs, I will not be able to continue to use this dog for a 4-H project. As a parent or guardian, I have discussed with my child the need to follow all safety procedures, behavior guidelines, and other protocols set forth by adult volunteers, and 4-H dog rules and regulations. I understand that my child will receive assistance from a 4-H volunteer leader when engaged in 4-H club workouts and other similar programs and activities involving 4-H members and dogs. I understand the importance of my child belonging to a 4-H dog club or seeking other socialization and training opportunities for my child s 4-H dog if not enrolled in a 4-H dog club. In consideration for the opportunity to participate in club, county, regional, and state 4-H dog activities, and the use of services and facilities made available through these 4-H dog activities, I do release and forever discharge for myself and my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, the Ohio 4-H Dog Program professional and volunteer leaders, educators, The Ohio State University and its Board of Trustees, its administrators, faculty and staff, from all claims, demands, and causes of action for personal injury or any other damage which may arise out of or be in any way related to my participation in this activity or program. I understand and agree that my child is capable of being in control of his/her dog(s) at all times. I understand and agree that if a dog my child is currently using, or plans to use, has been or becomes aggressive toward other people and/or dogs I will not allow my child to use this dog as a 4-H project. I understand that my child is not required to participate in any 4-H dog activity, but grant permission for him/her to do so, despite the possible risks. I recognize that by participating in this activity, as with any activity involving live animals, my child, my child s dog(s), other people and/or dogs may risk injury. I hereby attest and verify I have been advised of the potential risks, have sought clarification if I have not understood, that I have full knowledge of the risks involved in these activities, and that I assume any expense that may be incurred in the event of an accident, illness, or other incapacity, regardless of whether I have authorized such expenses.
