AUDIBLE FOR DOGS SUBMITTED BY C. Berger http://ee.usatoday.com/olive/odn/usatsample/shared/showarticle.aspx?doc=usa%2f2017%2f08%2 F06&entity=Ar00601&sk=42DE9BD5&mode=text NEW YORK You think your dog is pretty smart. But is your pet smart enough to digest Leo Tolstoy and Jane Austen? The folks behind Audible, the Amazon-owned company and largest seller of narrated books, want your dog to listen to Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice and other classic literature. The company is teaming up with famed Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan on an aptly named new service called Audible For Dogs. The pitch to pet owners isn t to turn Fido into a canine scholar but rather to keep him calm and happy when you leave for work. I m always looking for ways where people don t feel guilty, worried (or) stressed when they leave their dogs alone, Millan told USA TODAY. Millan said the separation anxiety your pet feels can result in bad behavior: incessant barking that disturbs neighbors, destruction of furniture or peeing in the wrong place. Or you dog could just end up downright depressed. Dogs are social animals, so they need to engage with someone, he said. With Audible, people can feel that the dog has company. While most dog owners will indeed go to great lengths to ensure the happiness of their four-legged family members, you can t help but approach Audible For Dogs with a healthy dose of skepticism. So is Audible barking up the wrong tree? One immediate question: Why not just play music or turn on the radio or TV while you re gone? It s the consistency of a tone that allows the dog to stay in that (relaxed) frame of mind, Millan said. It s why meditation works, he said, and it is why Audible works. Audible cites a 2015 academic study at Hartpury College in the U.K. that showed that listening to audiobooks rather than music reduced stress in the animals. In follow-up research conducted with 100 dog participants through Millan s Dog Psychology Center, 76% of dog owners who played audiobooks for their dogs reported an increase in calm, relaxed behavior in their pets over a four-week period. Millan recommends you exercise your dog and get it in a relaxed state before you play an audiobook. If possible, he also advises owners to listen with their dogs at first and to experiment with different titles. Millan and the team at Audible are curating audiobooks from a catalog with more than 350,000 titles and audio programs. He said you should choose a book narrated by a person of the same gender as the dog s primary master, played at average volume on an in-home listening device such as the Alexa-driven Echo device which, conveniently, Audible s parent Amazon sells. Audible, of course, has additional motivation for the launch: the potential to attract new users. The idea that not only does this introduce dogs to listening but introduces their owners as well is exciting to me, said Audible Chief Content Officer Andy Gaies. Audible doesn t disclose how many millions of subscribers it has, but Gaies said half the people who tried Audible in the past year had never listened to an audiobook before. Though you can purchase Audible titles a la carte, the primary way users tap into the service s content is through a monthly $14.95 subscription, which includes one credit a month that can be applied to any audiobook. Your dog will never wax poetic about Rosamund Pike s nuanced performance of Pride and Prejudice, but you will return home to a calmer, happier best friend, Gaies said. Millan also recorded an original audio book for the service called Cesar Millan s Guide to Bringing a Home a Shelter Dog, which is a free download. Through the end of the year, Audible will donate a dime per download of the title to Long Island s North Shore Animal League America, the world s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization. It s the consistency of a tone that allows the dog to stay in that (relaxed) frame of mind. Dog behaviorist, Cesar Millan 4
VIDEOS NOSE WORK THE REAL THING! https://www.youtube.com/embed/nk-t_t166ty?feature=player_embedded DEMOS OF THE NEW OBEDIENCE RULES https://akcobedrlyjudges.wordpress.com/2018/01/12/akc-obedience-videos-on-youtube/ HOLIDAY PARTY Our annual party was held on Saturday, January 13th at Ike's in Sterling Heights. It was well attended by members and students: Debby and Add Iglehardt, and Amanda and Bruce Watkins. Lots of talking among members about instructors and our classes. As usual, Pat Diefenbach prepared her annual Holiday Trivia. This time is was all about Snoopy. Lucky me. I sat across from winners Tracey Martin and Dena Norton. They both got nice soap for their trivia expertise. We rolled out at almost 9:45 p.m. which indicated to me everyone had a good time. One thing we forgot: Pictures. So, next time someone remind us to take pictures. Thanks, Pat, for your help and to all the members who made our Holiday Party a memorable one. Barbara & Pat Holiday Committee 5
AKC Nose Work Trials are coming and we need help!!!! INEXPERIENCED WORKERS NEEDED!! Enjoy the rewards of being an AKC steward!!! (Food, admiration of your colleagues, eternal gratitude.) AKC Rules do not allow stewards to work in classes where they are entered. Most of our nose work folks will be entered in Novice. Therefore, we need unentered volunteers to work the Novice Classes. (2 days, 1 day, half a day just let us know when you can work.) TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED We will be groveling at your feet! 6
Join us for a SNIFF & GO (Nose Work Fun Match). Each element will have 1-3 hides using the 4 AKC odors. We will always have containers and interiors. The 3rd element will rotate between buried (novice and advanced only), exterior and vehicle (weather permitting). Please share with your nose work friends! 7

CGC AND TRICK DOG TESTING by Chris Wellsandt SDTC sponsored a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test at the Winter Classic "All Breed" show at Novi once again. We have been doing this for 8 or 9 years. When I arrived there wasn't a ring set up for us by the staff. They had the information wrong based on MBF and the premium. Can you imagine us not starting CGC until 3:00? Virginia and Dorothea are the CGC test evaluators. They tactfully interacted with the "powers that be" our function was to run from 10:00 to 3:00 and we needed a ring for Saturday and Sunday! A space was found. Soon dog owners of competing dogs as well as family pets were signing up. I found it delightful, as I am sure others involved in representing SDTC were, to meet/greet people anxious to take this test and prove their dogs worthy of a CGC title. Our evaluators were patient in explaining and clarifying what the routine of each portion of the test was to each applicant. Among the mix of people and dogs that qualified for the CGC title was a young lady with her conformation Golden Retriever; 2 teenage girlfriends with their well loved pets, a top agility competitor, and a young married couple that have a very special story about their two Am Staffs Matt and Jacqui Delvca, of Lake Orion, have two 2 yr. old American Staffordshire Terriers named after the Outer Banks Lighthouses (see note): Bodie and Buxton. These two Am staffs were rescued as puppies from a raid of a "Pit Bull" fighting home in Flint. They were to be used as "bait dogs" to train other dogs for fighting. The Delvca's had been searching to find the right dogs to rescue. When they saw the photos of these two, Matt said their 'smoochy' faces captured their hearts. In the two years they have had them they have done a great job of socializing and training them. The dogs passed their test easily. 10
It was exciting to inform and assure the Delvca's that they could register their dogs with AKC PAL with their correct breed name and be eligible to participate in a variety of dog performance venues. They left excited to become part of a bigger dog community. I personally hope to see them register for classes at SDTC. Note: Maybe this is how the Delvca's looked at the dogs and themselves: The lighthouse symbol can be broken down into two concepts. The first is of the lighthouse itself, which can symbolize salvation and safety, especially in the face of adversity. The second concept is the lighthouse keeper, the person who tends the lighthouse. Common symbols associated with that concept are a figure always remaining vigilant. It can also mean someone keeping alert under the direst of circumstances. =================================== Volunteers: Saturday: Dorthea Burton Rene Sutton Chris Wellsandt Bob Mansell Virginia Smith Beth Widdows Sunday: Dorthea Burton Rene Sutton Barb Popyk Mark Squire Bill Snyder Virginia Smith Cathi Winkles We made about $370 this at $10 a test. 11
