2 Cathy Blacklock Recording Secretary, WHWTCA 2389 Twin Lakes Dr. Uniontown, OH 44685 Tel: 330-618-7902 cajims@msn.com DELEGATE REPORT The Delegate Meeting was held in Newark, New Jersey September 11 and 12. AKC DELEGATE REPORT President Dennis Sprung announced 120 AKC clubs and 1,250 individuals have raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars to date for disaster relief. The AKC Humane Fund in addition donated $10,000 to the Houston Hurricane Relief Fund and donated an AKC pet disaster relief trailer to Houston. Up until that time Houston didn't have one. Speaking of the trailers, so far AKC hs raised, through the good efforts of all those involved, $1.6 million for trailers. We actually have 63 trailers currently in the field and there are six more in the pipeline. Joseph Baffuto, AKC Chief Financial Officer gave his report. Total year-to-date revenue of $41.5 million has been offset by total expenses of $36.8 million, which reflects an operating income of $4.7, above the operating income of $4.0 million at the same time last year. Revenues are up by $3.8 million dollars, a 10% increase. Litter Volume for the year so far is 140,000, an increase of 7%. Dog Registrations are currently at 335,000 which is also 7% above the period in 2016. Total Pedigree sales are 151,000 which represents a 4% year over year increase. Expenses recorded a grand total of $36.8 million dollars. This is an overall increase from 2016 of $3.1 million dollars or 9%. Payroll and benefits are up by $2.8 million, or 17% as our full time equivalent headcount has increased from 292 to 317.5 over the last 12 months. Investments have yielded a 7% unrealized gain this year. Rule Changes: Championships. A proposed amendment would include the dog awarded Select Dog or Bitch in the calculation of Grand Championship points for that award. Approved. Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedures for Pointing Breeds. This new paragraph would allow for a National Gun Dog Championship for Gordon Setters. The event is limited to walking handlers. Approved. A controversial proposal to change the process and procedures for disqualifying and reinstating a dog for biting at a dog show was withdrawn. It was announced, in 2018, work will begin on a new headquarters for the American Kennel Club at 101 Park Avenue opposite Grand Central Station, a prime location for tourists, visitors and commuters traveling to and from all parts of New York City and beyond. The AKC Museum of the Dog will occupy the first two levels of this imposing

class-a building, including the ground floor, and will welcome the world to America s greatest resource for and about dogs. Building upon thirty years St. Louis, the Museum s mission will remain: the collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of the art, artifacts and literature of the dog for purposes of education, historical perspective, aesthetic enjoyment and enhancement of the human-canine relationship. At the Herding, Earthdog and Coursing Committee, several new events were discussed. Farm Dog is a companion event to CGC for rural environment, with exposure to livestock, and gates. As of September, the sport had drawn over 150 events and 3000 entries. Trick Dog is a formalized demonstration of simple tricks performed on command. Scent Work is an AKC adaptation of Nose work. It involves six types of environment: Container, Exterior, Interior, Buried, Detective, and Handler Discrimination. All but Detective have four levels of competence. Initial competition was held in Ohio in September. The HEC Committee approved and submitted to Staff the Best Practices for Fast Cat. This effort paralleled earlier Best Practices for Cat. At the Parent Club Committee meeting, AKC Librarian and Archivist Brynn White led a discussion on how AKC can support club efforts to establish and maintain archives. Her advice and guidance is no charge to the club. A survey is forthcoming for clubs to respond with questions, problems and needs for archival support. There is a proposal to the AKC Board to make Parent Club Conferences a bi-annual event. Board action is pending. A proposal from the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club would allow neutered dogs and spayed bitches, who are veterans, and who are champions to be entered in Best of Breed competition at Independent Specialties. As your delegate, I stand ready and able to assist with any issues you may be facing with AKC. 7 New advertising details A message from the West Highland White Terrier Club of Northern Ohio.. We ve planned a holiday get together for Friday the 8 th at Bravo restaurant including a gift exchange. Then, once the holidays are over, pretty much everyone in Ohio burrows in for the winter. We re counting on warmer weather to arrive by planning our summer specialty the first weekend in August. You may have heard plans are underway for a LARGE air conditioned arena at Canfield, but that won t be finished for 2018. So come along for a last old fashioned Canfield. The cluster has decided to repeat Christmas at

8 Canfield and we ll need some more decorations for our building. As you re getting out things this month and find something you don t to wish to keep, put it aside to bring along next summer. We have some great sweepstakes judges slated for 2018. Possibly someone you ve never showed to before. Diane Orange and Pat Logan-Hale. And two new pieces for your collection of our exclusive dinnerware will be part of the trophies. Come and see. Chris Schriber. Now that the year 2017 is coming to a close, the WHWTC of Indiana would like you to start thinking about attending our 2018 specialty. It will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 with the Louisville Kennel Club show at the Kentucky Exposition Center, Louisville, KY. Our approved judges are Susan Napady, regular classes, and Jan Parcel, all sweepstakes. It again will be an opportunity for five sets of those elusive majors. Judges for the other shows in the Kentuckiana cluster will be announced in the next UPDATES. Come join us for a fun weekend with our Southern Hospitality! You won't regret it!
