Text A Dogs are they right for your family? One of the most frequent questions sent in to this magazine is: Should my family get a dog? There are many things to take into account when thinking about getting a dog. One consideration is the breed. Not all dogs are naturally good with children. Some dogs, like Pugs, are well-suited to family life. But almost any dog, if properly trained and cared for, can become a perfect companion for a family with young children. The thing to remember is that no dog comes handily pre-packaged. You need to give plenty of time and attention to training your dog, so that it becomes a model canine citizen. It is the responsibility of dog owners to ensure that their dog does not pose a risk to anyone, especially children. Even if your dog is normally well-behaved, you should never leave a dog alone with a child or a visitor whom the dog doesn t know. Should something happen, you will be responsible. You also need to consider whether, as a family, you can afford your new four-legged friend. As well as all the usual costs, there are always teething troubles with puppies, or newly adopted dogs. Your expensive sofa could be chewed and even ruined. When you bring your dog home, it will need a while to get used to its new surroundings. After this, you need to think about training. This can be costly. And what if you want to go on holiday and you can t take your dog? You may have to pay for a pet sitter or to put the dog into kennels. If you pick the right breed and have the time and money to make sure your dog is healthy, happy and well-trained, you may well find that getting a dog is the best decision your family ever makes. *P48988A0312* 3 Turn over

Text B Responsible dog ownership If you want to be a responsible dog owner, you must think about the time and money you will need to spend on raising the new member of your family. This goes beyond the initial cost of buying a dog with some of the more fashionable breeds having a price tag of over 5,000. There are also the costs of dog training classes and vets fees. There are many more things to consider. Food The cost of feeding your dog varies depending on the breed you have chosen to buy. A smaller breed will need less food than a larger dog, such as a Golden Retriever. However, you should also consider the nutritional needs of your dog and this varies from breed to breed. You will need to buy food enriched with calcium for dogs that are likely to suffer from bone problems. Protein-rich foods if you want to keep your dog s coat soft and shiny. Maintenance The most important thing is pet insurance, which every responsible owner should have, as your dog will need treatment at some point in its life. Maintenance includes grooming (more expensive for dogs with longer hair) and clipping your dog s claws. You should also consider the number of leads and toys you are going to need over the course of your dog s lifetime. Training Dogs can be thought of as being like humans; without proper training they find it hard to interact with their surroundings and could become a threat to people. Remember, you have a responsibility for your dog s behaviour and this is enforceable by law. You must keep your dog under control, especially when people are visiting your home. There are different options for training your dog. Some people spend money on a recognised trainer. You could do it yourself provided you have the necessary skills. Whichever option you choose, be prepared to spend plenty of time getting your dog to behave properly. Text C Dog owners warned of jail threat if their pets jump up to greet visitors Dog owners could face prosecution if their pet jumps up at a visitor in their own home, an animal welfare charity has warned. Changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act that came into force last week mean owners will be liable if dogs are dangerously out of control on any private property. Previously the law applied only to public places. Now, allowing a dog to injure a person is punishable by up to five years in prison. The new rules designed to protect postmen mean every owner will need to reassess their dog s behaviour, according to Clare Williams of the National Animal Welfare Trust. Some may even need to bring in a dog whisperer to train their pet to behave at the front door. The problem we now face is how the notion of an out of control dog is interpreted, said Miss Williams. A friendly dog may bark and lunge at someone when they approach the front door. This could be seen as threatening. Even a friendly dog may jump up or even put its teeth around a person s arm, just because it is being playful. The new Act states that a dog does not have to bite to be deemed dangerous a person can simply feel that the dog may injure them. The National Animal Welfare Trust states: This change in legislation should be a wakeup call to all dog owners to ensure their dogs are under control when they open the door, otherwise they risk committing a criminal offence. It is not unusual for a dog to react to any visitor to your door, so you need to decide how you are going to manage that situation. The easiest thing is to shut your dog in another room or in the garden, provided the dog cannot access the front door from the garden. If that is not an option, you will need to seek an experienced or qualified dog trainer. Miss Williams added: Although we would hope that a dog jumping up wouldn t result in prosecution, owners need to be aware of this legislation and not take the risk.
