BRISTOL & NORFOLK COUNTY 400 MAIN STREET, WALPOLE, MA 02081 (P) 508-668-9793 MASSACHUSETTS 4-H NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2017 Regional County Advisory 4-H Club Grants The Bristol County 4-H Advisory Council and the Norfolk County 4-H Advisory Council are pleased to be able to provide direct support to enrolled 4-H clubs in the form of club grants. These grants are available for special projects or needs that the 4-H club has which support the educational program and 4-H priorities. Grants are not meant to be used for member awards, travel expenses, t-shirts, etc. Some examples of the types of grants clubs might want to consider applying for would be to purchase specific equipment to assist club members in preparing their animals to show at fairs, to buy resource curriculum to prepare club members for county and state educational competitions, or to request funds to purchase materials or supplies for a club community service project. The amount of each grant awarded will be based on the merit of the grant proposed, how many people it will impact, and the number of overall applications that are received. Clubs should complete the grant application provided with this newsletter and mail it to the county 4- H Office by October 1. We highly encourage, if you have any teen leaders in your club, that they take an active role in putting the club application together. Enjoy the Summer! Hope everyone has a happy and safe summer. We are looking forward to seeing you at local events throughout the summer or in the fall as we start a new 4-H year. Theme Gift Baskets Needed for 4-H Tent at Cracker Barrel Fair We are asking our Norfolk County 4-H clubs to donate some type of theme gift basket to raffle off at the Cracker Barrel Fair to raise campership funds for our county Advisory Council. Possible theme basket ideas could be movies, candy, toys, technology (ipod accessories, itunes gift cards), and ice cream baskets. Gift baskets can be dropped off at the 4-H Office up until September 13 or brought directly to the Cracker Barrel Fairgrounds on the weekend of the fair. Thank you for your support! Cracker Barrel Food Booth Verna Gurwitz, Norfolk County Advisory Council member, will be coordinating the food booth at the Cracker Barrel Fair this year as a fundraiser for the 4-H program. If you can help her out during the fair, September 15-17, please email Verna at Vernamg@msn.com. Correction In the spring 4-H newsletter, Eva Hourigan was omitted from the list of Norfolk County 4-H ers who received a Big E Quality ribbon at the County VP Day. Eva will be invited to do a visual presentation, stage performance or action exhibit at the Big E in September. Congratulations, Eva! 17 th ANNUAL FALL OPEN HOUSE September 15-17, 2017 Cracker Barrel Fairgrounds, Wrentham The Norfolk County 4-H Program will be holding its 17 th Annual Fall Open House as part of the Cracker Barrel Fair located at the Wrentham Developmental Center Cracker Barrel Fairgrounds, Emerald Street, Wrentham, on the weekend of September 15-17. The purpose of our involvement will be to promote the 4-H program to the general public in order to recruit new members and volunteers, provide opportunities for our 4-H members to exhibit, and to raise money to support the 4-H program! The 4-H program s involvement at the Cracker Barrel Fair will include animal exhibits, 4-H program promotional exhibits and various fundraisers. The Thunder Hill Canine Encounters 4- H Club will be running a costume pet parade and a 4-H dog show on Sunday, September 17. Information for both events is included with this newsletter. Once again, we will be offering a 4-H photography contest for interested 4-H members (including Cloverbuds!). Details are included with this newsletter. A rabbit show is planned for Sunday, September 17. Information on this event is also included in the newsletter. A sign-up sheet for 4-H members, volunteers and parents to help out at the Open House is included. We are hoping that every 4-H club in Norfolk County will help out at the fair by having several of their members, leaders and parents sign up to assist the 4-H program in some way for a couple of hours. In past years, the Cracker Barrel Fair has included attractions such as a road race, carnival rides, hayrides, antique auto parade, flea market, fireworks display, several musical bands, and other entertainment groups. We hope that you will plan to support 4-H by participating in some way. Feel free to contact the 4-H Office at (508) 668-9793 if you have any questions about this event or need any additional information.
