REU Symposium [Poster Presentation] Research Positions Master s Research 2014-present Dr. Fredric Janzen, PI Laboratory and field experiments to understand: How maternal nest-location choice influences the incubation microhabitats experienced and the resulting offspring phenotypes of developing embryos across a wide geographic range. o Focused on embryonic development and offspring phenotypes across a wide geographic range when incubated at constant temperatures under laboratory conditions. Brooke L. Bodensteiner- Curriculum Vitae Page 2

o o Characterized the microhabitats of maternal nest-site choice between and within study locations. Manipulating maternal nest-site choice to measure phenotypes and performance of offspring in the field. Undergraduate Research Assistant 2011-2014 Dr. Fredric Janzen, PI Monitored nesting habitats of painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and processed nests and eggs. Completed two independent field research projects. o Addressed the effects of altering hydric conditions of nests on embryos and offspring. Experimentally manipulated the hydric conditions of C. picta nests during incubation and measured potential effects on offspring phenotypes and survival. o Addressed the adaptive significance of temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) in the wild. Experimentally manipulated C. picta nests by applying hormones to eggs and relocating nests to different thermal environments during field incubation and measured potential effects on offspring phenotype and survival. Assistant field crew leader; advised graduate student leader in scientific methods and protocol at site, orchestrated multiple research projects. Lab Experience: o Dissections, data analysis (excel, SAS, & gap light analysis), animal care and maintenance. o Quantified measurements of lizard growth during the first month of life. o Quantified measurements of hatchling C. picta. o Performed timed fitness trials with Southern and Northern Alligator Lizards. o Performed timed fitness trials with hatchling C. picta. o Prepared, sliced, mounted, and stained histology slides of lizard gonads. Field Experience: o Daily transects, captured animals (lizards, snakes, and turtles), radio telemetry, aquatic turtle trapping, measured, marked and collected blood samples from turtles. National Science Foundation REU intern 2011 & 2012 Dr. Fredric Janzen, PI; Dr. Dan Warner, Post Doc Participated in long-term field studies of temperature-dependent sex determination in C. picta and other turtles. Developed experimental design and completed independent project. Lab Experience: o Dissections, data analysis (excel, SAS, & gap light analysis), animal care and maintenance. Field Experience: o Daily transects, captured animals (lizards, snakes, and turtles), aquatic turtle trapping, measured, marked and collected blood samples from turtles, quantified important nest and egg variables. Communicating and collaborating are the best ways to move forward in any scientific endeavor. Working with the next generation of scientists is an important part of my motivation in my day to day work. When I help someone better understand the world in which they live, or give them a better appreciation for the amazing, bizarre, and beautiful things that have evolved in nature, I feel fulfilled. This section outlines my outreach experiences. Brooke L. Bodensteiner- Curriculum Vitae Page 5
