WORLD TYPE STANDARD (As adopted by World Conference held in New Zealand in 1975) General Appearance: The Corriedale should at once give the impression of good constitution. To be of distinctive character and bold outlook with good carriage and walk. The Corriedale being a dual purpose sheep, in judging consideration to be given to both carcass and wool. The sheep should give the impression of being well-balanced animals. Head: Broad and strong: that of the ram of masculine appearance, wide, open nostrils, no horns, but rudimentry horn growth, not attached to the bone structure, shall be a minor defect. Dark nostrils. Black spots on nose and ears a minor defect. Blue or dark colouring on skin round nose, ears, or eyes are defects. A good covering of sound wool, clean face, but not bare, wool blindness a defect. The desired face colour is a dark nostril with soft white hair on nose and round eyes. Ears of medium size, carried gaily and of good texture. Fore-end: Broad strong neck with good scrag. Shoulders well set and level, brisket deep and carried well forward to give a good underline. Middle and Loin: Ribs deep and well sprung and no drop behind the shoulder. The back level with the loin broad. Hindquarter: Thighs well apart and deep giving a large well shaped leg of mutton. Excessively drooped rump a defect. Legs: Legs moderate length, of good bone, set straight and well apart and squarely under the sheep. Hard, well formed feet, dark in colour preferred. The legs must be free from black or brown wool or hair in patches or spots. Wool: The Corriedale should carry a heavy even fleece of bright soft handling wool, showing good staple length and density, with a well defined lock, and even tip, having pronounced and even crimp of a type and standard in keeping with breed spinning quality. The desired quality is a long stapled, bulky 26-32 micron of even density. In males the purse should be covered with wool not too coarse in texture. 449

Faults that will Disqualify a Pedigree Sheep: Marked lack of constitution. Malformed mouth. Shallow bottom jaw. Heavy horn attached to the bone of the skull. Marked divergence from face colour, as laid down in the standard. Excessively pink, light-coloured or pinched nostrils. Excessively bare, thin or badly-coloured ears. Brown or black spots on head or legs. Brown or black fibres on head or legs. Droopy ears. Poor carriage. Malformation of legs or feet. Marked divergence of carcass points, as laid down in standard. Excessive wool blindness. Extremely weak head covering. Marked presence of non-wool fibres in the fleece. Marked degree of weakness in wool on back or belly. Excessive harshness in fleece. Black or brown spots or fibres in any part of the fleece. Marked divergence from wool points as laid down in standard. Judges and Inspectors should examine the breeding organs of sheep to ensure their complete presence. In case of doubt a veterinary opinion should be obtained. And as a guide in judging, the allotment of points should be (1) General appearance and style...15 (2) Form and constitution...40 (3) Wool...45 SHEARING REGULATIONS FOR SHOWS In an effort to project a meaningful profile at leading Corriedale shows, the following regulations will apply :- FOR Royal Shows at Christchurch and at Invercargill, for the. Canterbury A. & P. Show, and for the A. & P. Shows at Ellesmere, Ashburton and Amberley :- 1) All rams & ewes under 18 months exhibited in shorn classes must be machine shorn on or after 20th July in the year of the show. 2) All sheep exhibited in woolly classes must have been machine shorn on or after 1st November in the year preceeding the show. FOR Autumn Shows at Amuri, Cheviot and Hawarden, the entries in the Open Ram Classes must comply with the November machine shearing regulation specified above in Clause 2. Gold Mark - G.M. CORRIEDALE BREED INITIATIVES The aim of the Gold Mark scheme is to identify the top 10% of both rams & ewes, and ram hogget's within participating flocks by doing a cross flock analysis. This will be done by S.I.L. and the rankings will be on the D.P.I. The top 10% will then be inspected to meet breed standards and a gold tag placed in the ear. To qualify for Gold Mark 1) The Stud flock must be recorded on S.I.L. and the sires be in the top 10% for D.P.I. 2) Have enough links with one or more participating flocks 3) Breeders agree to have data analysed by the scheme and accept the results. Silver Mark - S.M. The aim of the Silver Mark scheme is to identify the next top 15% of rams after the top 10% of rams (Gold Mark) have been identified. Silver Mark rams are from the top 25% of rams in participants' flocks. 451
