PawPrints Magazine's Homeless cover Model Photo by: Michael Cline Photography Let s play ball! That s me, Katarina, the Cover Model kitten, on the left. Sitting next to me and doing his best to ignore me is my brother, Mr. Meow-gi. We are medium-haired Tabbies, 7-weeks-old, and we are just two out of almost 100 kittens that Adopt-An-ANGEL is seeking homes for this Kitten Season! Mr. Meow-gi and I are fun, playful, precious kittens with fluffy fur and kissable little faces. We love to be held and purr, purr, purr. Since we re so small, we re looking for adult-only homes or homes with children who are 5-years or older. To adopt one of us, or to inquire about any of the other available kittens, call or text our foster mom Melinda at 910-471-6909. We ll be ready to ride home with our new families by mid to late June, once we have been spayed, neutered and vaccinated. Sandpaper kisses to Michael Cline Photography for our super-fun photo shoot. Now, go adopt a kitten and hit a home run this season!

Hi, I m Danny! I m an older gentleman at 12-years-old but I really want a family of my own! I came into my foster home in really bad shape but I m doing better now. I would do best in a home with mature humans who understand my needs and are willing to work with me. Would you be willing to let me join your family? If so, please contact RescueConnect at 910-302-7290 today! I am sponsored by Mr. Peanut and Ginger Snap. My name is Froggy (38544003) and I m a 1½-year-old girl who is a gorgeous white girl with gorgeous yellow eyes. Here at the shelter, I keep getting passed up for some of the younger kittens, but if you think about it, I m not that far from being a kitten myself. There are so many amazing adult cats at the shelter with me. Please remember that if you are looking for a feline companion, don t overlook us older friends. We have so much love to share! The shelter is located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jacksonville. For more info, call the adoption desk at 910-937-1164 or 910-455-0182. You may also visit us at www.onslowcountync.gov/animalservices. I am sponsored in honor of all the cats who are waiting for homes at the shelter. 4 www.pawprintsmagazine.com June 2018

We are sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund in loving memory of Maryrose Miller. Miss Avis Davis, 1990-2005 Rescue Animals Community Effort Hi everyone! My name is Max and I'm an 11-year-old Malinois mix who is 45 pounds, neutered and blind. I'm in good health except I can't see. I know the word "step" so when going for walks, my foster mom will say "step" and I step down; or step up" and I step up. I like meeting people and I'm fully house-trained. I'm a laid-back dude, but I do like to go on walks and sniff everything. Come on and fill out a no obligation application at www.raceshelter.org and meet me! If you would like more information, please call 910-579-0407. Hi everyone, my name is Montgomery and I'm an 11-year-old, neutered male, Chihuahua mix. I follow my foster mom everywhere and don't even need a leash cause I just want to be with my people. I am house-trained and super loveable. When I first got to R.A.C.E., I had some really itchy skin. R.A.C.E. helped me feel much better! Please fill out a no-obligation application at www.raceshelter.org - and do it quick before I get scooped up by another Chi lover. For more info, please call 910-579-0407. A penny for your thoughts! I am Penny and I hope you're thinking about adding a new family member, mainly me. I am roughly 2-years-old, house-trained, spayed and up to date on vaccinations. As a huge bonus, I get along with everything on two or four legs! Please come see me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Sherry, at 910-523-1254. I am an awesome dog and anyone would be lucky to have me. For more information, give us a call 910-392-0557 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. My name is Trixie. I am a young Lab and Hound mix who weighs about 50 pounds. I am super-playful and I have a lot of energy. I need an active home with people who can be patient with me as I learn how to be a pet. I came out of an overcrowded rural animal shelter where I ran out of time. I seem to do well with other dogs and I am food motivated so that would be a useful tool in training me. Please come see me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. For more info, call 910-392-0557 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. Adopt-An-ANGEL Long Creek Animal Rescue My name might be Alaska but that doesn't mean I'm cold! I'm a fully vetted gray and white girl who's 1-year-old. I was rescued, along with my 5 siblings, from an empty house when I wasn't even weaned yet. Can you believe the owner wanted to put out poison to kill us all? That rocky start left me a little nervous around new people but I promise, once I get to know you, I'm just about the most loving, goofy, laid-back snuggle bug you'll ever meet. I even like dogs! It's not their fault they can't be as pretty as me, right? Please call 910-617-6290 or 704-682-2529 if you're ready to see just how warm Alaska can be! My name's Nevada, but you can call me Nevvy! I'm a little over 1-year-old, and ready to spend the rest of my life with a forever family. I can be a little shy sometimes, but don't let that fool you! I'm anything but demure. As soon as you give me some love you'll get to see the real me: feisty, funny, chatty and sweet as can be. I promise you won't be disappointed! My rescue moms say I've got a TON of personality. My ideal day would be spent playing with you until I'm all tuckered out and then settling down for an evening of snuggles. I just love to be loved. If that's your idea of the perfect day, please call 910-617-6290 or 704-682-2529.

As you can see, I m playful, adorable and heart-meltingly sweet! My name Is Rascal and I m an 8 to 10- week-old orange Tabby boy who will give you CUTE- NESS OVER- LOAD! Everyone at SOAR who comes to play with me falls in love. When SOAR took me to the vet for my check-up, I tested positive for FIV. But that does not matter to me! I m happy and active and as long as I have a good home and live as an INDOOR-ONLY kitty, I can enjoy a very long and healthy life! You can find out more about FIV online, from your veterinarian or by contacting SOAR at 910-457-6340. Please consider giving me your heart and welcoming me into your home. I want to grow up as part of a family, YOURS! I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge. Hi there! Black Bear here! I am a 6-year-old Boston Terrier and French Bulldog mix and I am one happy go lucky fella. Even though I have been through a lot, I really enjoy life. You see, I arrived with a very bad cherry eye that I d had most of my life. I had lost most of the vision in that eye, had lots of scar tissue and chronic dry eye. It was very uncomfortable. The eye doctor suggested that we remove my eye. I am now recovered, and I am looking forward to spending the rest of my life with a family who will love and appreciate me. P.S. I don t normally wear frilly collars, but they thought it would make me look better on camera what do you think? Come meet me at Paws Place and call 910-845- 7297 for driving directions or more info. You ve just got to see an adorable lovebug like me in person! I am sponsored in loving memory of Grace Harrington.

Please call 910-392-0557 to adopt us! Adopt-An-ANGEL My name is Sammy and I am an active, energetic pup who weighs about 60 pounds. Are you looking for a running partner? I am playful, funny and can be best described as an overall goof! I do pretty well with other dogs and would benefit from an older, quieter dog who could keep me settled. Do you have an older dog looking for company? I definitely need a fenced-in yard and someone with experience raising a dog. I spent 60 days in an overcrowded rural shelter and have some energy to run off and some learning to do. I am very healthy and drop dead gorgeous. Come meet me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. My name is Piper. I am a 1-year-old kitty who has grown up in foster care. I am the last kitten left in my litter. I am absolutely adorable, sweet and so gentle. I have been exposed to cats, kids and dogs in my foster home, so I d do well in a home with any of them. If you would like to meet me, call Jackie at 910-523-9719. My name is Rosie and I am a sweet, gentle and sensitive Hound. I am large and weigh about 60 pounds. I am shy, and would do best in a quiet home with a fenced-in yard. I would love a home with someone who will give me the time I need to blossom into the fabulous dog I was meant to be. Please give me the reassurance I need to help me build my confidence back up. I absolutely love other animals and would be really happy if I went to a home with another well balanced dog who could teach me the ropes. I am super healthy and crate-trained, too. You can meet me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. Hi, my name is Hemmy! I am as sweet as can be and I m super playful. I need an active family and a fenced in yard. I am a 1 to 2-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. I was found as a stray, ended up at an overcrowded shelter and after 60 days, I ran out of time. Now, I am looking for the perfect home! I seem to do well with everything and everyone I meet and I am sure to put a smile on your face! Please come meet me at Petco (324 South College Road in Wilmington) on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. My name is Bruiser and just look at my smile! I am a young, 35 pound adorable Jack Russell mix. I am house-trained, well-mannered, leash-trained and devoted to my owner - once I find one. I am midsized, come up to your knee and a little on the chubby side. I have a really cute personality. I am homeless because my owner moved and couldn t keep me. I am fearful of kids and their sudden movements so I need a kid-free home. If you would like to meet me, please call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. My name is Hunter and I am a ball obsessed Pit Bull. I LOVE tennis balls and love to fetch. I have the incredible focus of a typical ball crazy Labrador Retriever. I am super affectionate and really well-balanced. I am in perfect health, too. I seem to be housetrained and wellmannered and I get along with other dogs. I have lived with dogs in my previous home. I would make a great family pet. If you would like to meet me, please come see me at Petco on weekends or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. P.O. I may look rough with my missing fur and curled up cauliflower ear (from my life on the streets) but I have adapted to indoor life like you wouldn t believe. I am the ultimate cat for the cat fancier. Remember my name is Charles Norman and I am a conversational piece and life of any party. Come on down to the good old Petco and hang out with a cat who is so versatile that I need no leash in an open pet store. For more info about me or the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or you can visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you! I need a long-term foster or a very special adopter. I have ongoing respiratory issues. I m stable, but we re still trying to find the root cause. I m neutered and Feline Leukemia and FIV negative. I m a love bug and I like small, calm dogs. Hi, I m Lacey and I m 2-years-old. I want to be Queen Bee. It s kind of a Calico thing. I love attention. My favorite toy is something on the end of a string. I m a big cat, but I m beautiful and my fur is so soft. I love to be brushed (it makes me purr) and I want to be near my people. Please give me a chance at love. Hello! We are Rayne (Tuxedo on bottom) and Stormy (Grey Tabby on top). We promise to bring you feelings of bright skies and sunshine. Our foster mom says I m super-social and loving and Stormy is more reserved (but coming out of his shell more every day). We are very bonded and prefer to go to a home together. We were born late-summer of 2016 and had a nice home for a good long while. But now, through no fault of our own, we are looking for a fresh new start. We are microchipped. We both really like dogs. We are fostered with a moderately calm, medium size, female Lab. We are lap cats but don t like to be held per se, but we love attention and we love to be petted. Please call 910-792-9014 to adopt us! CAT: Cat Adoption Team We re at Petsmart 7 days a week. I m Mommy Cat, a 1-year-old petite girl who is mostly white with gray tabby patches. I have raised my litter of kittens and I m ready for my own home. I can be a little shy at first but I ll soon roll over and beg for you to scratch my belly and ears. Did I tell you that I have the cutest pink belly, ears and nose? I m still a playful young cat who also likes to snuggle with my people and I get along great with other cats. Please come and visit me for yourself. I have my kitty bags packed and I m ready to go to my new home! I m Linda, one of the 26 sweet and adoptable cats Cat Adoption Team saved from a hoarding situation. My housemates and I were losing our home and were in immediate danger of being euthanized. I m spayed, vaccinated and well-loved. Although I m a small cat, I m 2-years-old and I ve got the shiniest black fur with a dab of white on my chest. I am social with people, cats and even dogs. I m also a love bug and I crave attention. I hope you will please consider giving me a home of my own again. I m Andrew and I m the most handsome guy, don t you think? They tell me I m a Tuxedo cat but I m really just wearing my black coat and white socks. Oh, and I may have just dipped my face and whiskers in a bit of cream! I m a young boy at 9-months-old and have been with my Mom (Anita, also pictured) and sisters (Isabelle and Annabelle, also at the Cat Adoption Center) since my mom was abandoned while pregnant. I can be a bit shy at first, but if you bring out a laser pointer I will be your best buddy in a heartbeat! I m Madison, a 5-year-old Tabby girl who is good with kids! I m a bit confused due to losing my family through no fault of my own, but my sweet and gentle nature still shines through. Please adopt me. I promise you will not regret it. I m a great cat! I m Anita, a 1 to 2-year-old Tuxedo girl. I m a gentle soul with a big purr who only needs someone to love, a welcoming lap and I ll be the happiest cat. I can be a little shy but once I get to know you I am awesome. I found myself homeless when I was pregnant but luckily I was recued along with my three kittens. One of them, Andrew, is pictured here. Adult cats often get overlooked with so many kittens stealing the spotlight so if you re thinking about adopting, please consider me and my lovely little family. I m Maisy, a 10-month-old Tortoiseshell (a.k.a. Torti) kitten who was found abandoned under someone s porch. I can be a little reserved at first around new people, but if you talk to me then I ll talk back to you and come over for head scratches. Torti cats like me are incredibly stunning. We re almost always female and in the folklore of many cultures, our coloration is believed to bring good luck! Some folks even refer to us as money cats. I can t really comment on the money part, but I know that anyone would be lucky to have me as part of their family! Hello! We are Brie Brie and Cheese! I am Brie and Cheese is my son. We are 12 and 10-yearsold respectively. We are both small, long-haired black cats that are soft and fluffy. I am a little shyer than Cheese but we are both quiet and loving cats. Cheese has the cutest little face. We came to be homeless, were taken to a shelter and were within hours of being euthanized when, thankfully, two wonderful people Cheese rescued us and brought us to our foster. We would love another home to live out our lives together. We are both spayed and neutered, have all our vaccines and are FIV/FeLk negative. We want to stay together in an indoor home. We are fine with other cats but are not sure about dogs. We would like a quieter home. Won t you consider taking us to live together with you? Please call 910-262-8890 and let s talk! We are sponsored by Sharon Harmon and Barbara Blandine. Thank you! URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! FAMILY DOG ALERT! My name is Sophie (A029190) and I m house-trained, friendly with children and friendly with dogs. How did I come to be in this predicament? I once had a family but they moved away and now I m here. I m an 11- year-old, spayed Boxer/Lab mix with a loveable personality. I m quite bewildered at being here. I hope someone out there will have sympathy for a family dog like me and consider bringing me home. I ll be so very grateful! And in addition, there is NO COST to adopt me thanks to my friends. If you need driving directions, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email jhorton@pendercountync.gov. I am sponsored by PawPrints Magazine in honor of Kathy Lanio, whose compassion for shelter animals has helped save many lives.

Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! Cat Tails My name is Moon and I m an unusual girl. My coat is Calico, my eyes are blue and my feet are polydactyl. I m 3-years-old, but I m sort of cranky and slow to adjust to anything new. I d like to have a home without any kids or other pets because they really make me cranky. Some Tabbies are striped and some are marbled, but not me. I m Lulu and I m a spotted Tabby. I m a little shy until I get to know you, so you might think I m unfriendly. If you give me time to adjust, I can be wonderful. If you have a family with no small children or dogs (they scare me), I d love to join in. KITTENS! It s kitten season and Cat Tails has lots of kittens. We all have been tested for FIV, Feline Leukemia and heartworms, we ve been treated for fleas and worms, we've been given age appropriate vaccinations and we re spayed or neutered. That s means we re ready and waiting to be adopted! We are Dot and Dash. We are 3-month-old Torti girls. We re sisters and we re almost twins! Aren t we beautiful? Now, if we lived at your home, you would get to know our individual personalities and you wouldn t have any trouble telling us apart. Come get us and we ll try it. I am a 7- month-old black and white girl and I m the last cat from a group of ten who all came from the same house. My name is Folly and I have no idea why I m the last one to find a home. I have the cutest three freckles on my nose! Look! Don t you just love those! Wouldn t you like to see those cuties every day? I was picked up by a very nice person on a cold, rainy night at a gas station in Wilmington. I had a bad cold and eye infections. I could hardly see and I hadn t had anything to eat for a while. I m well now, but I sure would like to have a home and family of my own. If you come to meet me, ask for Zandy. Oh, I m a 1-year-old Calico girl. 6622 Beach Drive SW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469 www.cattails.org June 2018 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 19

Hi, I'm Buddy (that's me on the right) and with me is my best buddy, Max (on the left). We're Lab mixes who are 5 to 6-years-old, neutered and up to date on vaccines. We were rescued separately from bad situations. We play, sleep and eat together and it would break our hearts to be separated. We're hoping we can find a new home together because our caregiver's situation has changed. I'm very outgoing and some might say a little goofy, but I love attention and want to be close to humans. My buddy, Max, is a little more laid-back but he's a really good dog, too. We're not house-trained and haven't walked much on a leash, but we're pretty smart and eager to please. To give us a good home, please call Pet Friends of Duplin County at 910-271-3101. We are sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! Hi, my name is Skeeter! I m a petite little Beagle mix girl, already spayed and just 1 to 2-years-old. I m enrolled in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program where I ll learn all kinds of cool stuff to be a better behaved pet. I m really looking forward to graduation at the end of this month and getting into a home with airconditioning! I got to stay in airconditioning for the first time at the vet and wow, is that nice! If you want a cute little bug like me as your very own, contact Laurie at 703-864-5754 or email adopt@montyshome.org. Better yet, fill out an application on the website at www.montyshome.org. My name is Angel. I am a beautiful and sweet senior lady of 12-years who is looking for that special family to take care of me. I have a heart murmur and take medication with meals to keep things in check. My owner became ill and was no longer able to care for me. Another pet in the home is ok with me. I lived in a home with a small dog but never with another cat - perhaps a senior companion would be ok. I prefer a home with no small children as I need my beauty rest and like a quiet environment. Please call April with Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-0287 if you are interested in adopting me. You may also complete an adoption application at fureverfriendsnc.com. Hi, my name is Cassie. I am a 9-year-old, 14 pound domestic short-haired girl with a gorgeous coat and markings. I am super affectionate, love to be handled and enjoy the company of other cats and calm dogs. I did not receive much attention or medical care before now, so I had some urinary issues. I'm all good now but need to remain on a prescription diet to be sure I stay healthy. I am spayed, current on vaccinations and have a microchip. And lucky me, my adoption fee has been paid by an anonymous donor. Please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 to schedule a meet and greet.

HELP!!! It's Kitten Season! Each year too many unwanted kittens are born outside in the rain and cruelty of their surroundings, and each year Friends of Felines (FOF) volunteers and caregivers are out in force trying to prevent these unwanted births through a managed trap/neuter/vaccinate and return program. For years, FOF has teamed up with local adoption groups to try to get these young feral kittens out of colonies and into foster care, but there are just not enough homes for everyone. Please support us on our mission to reduce unwanted births so no kitten has to survive outside, dodging cars and wondering where its next meal is coming from. Please send your tax-deductible donation to: Friends of Felines P.O. Box 475 Castle Hayne, NC 28429 For more info, visit www.friendsofelines.org or email friendsofelines@aol.com. I was adopted but recently returned when my family could no longer keep me. I seem to do well with older kids and settled animals. I m spayed and current on vacations so we can immediately start our life together (please keep me indoors only). Come see me at Petco or call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783. Onslow County Animal Services Call 910-937-1164 or 910-455-0182 or email animalcontrol@onslowcountync.gov to adopt! My name is Apollo (38508177) and despite this happy look on my face, I might be the saddest pup the shelter workers have ever met. I have been waiting so patiently for a family of my own and am still hoping for a second chance at happiness. I try so hard at adoption events, sitting with my favorite squeaky toy in my mouth and ready to meet everyone. I tend to talk to everyone as well, which may be why people pass me by. But I am such a good boy. I love to run and I m a terrific fetch partner. My ideal home will have a big fenced yard where I can stretch my paws and chase a ball. My ideal human(s) will need to share in my love of adventure and have lots of time for exercise and play. I love to be with my people, so a home where I will be alone often would not be a good fit. A home with a stay-at-home human would be best. I m a sweet, 4-year-old boy who is so deserving of happiness. If you have room in your heart and home, come out and meet me. My name is Tilapia (383254495) and no one can understand how I m still at the shelter. I m an 8-month-old beauty who would love to love you. I m a gorgeous dilute Tortie. I have a quiet nature here at the shelter, which is why I may be getting overlooked. I just know my personality will start to shine when I am out of a kennel and into a loving home. If you are looking for a feline friend, I may be the girl for you. Where are the Boxer lovers? The shelter knows Boxer people are fanatically devoted to their breed and I m in need of a family to share all my love and wiggles with. My name is Doc Holiday (38575305) and I m a 4-year-old boy whose tail is always wagging. I m happy-go-lucky and super friendly. I am great with other dogs, have never met a stranger and would make a terrific companion for any home. My name is Rorschach (38454690) and I m a 2½-year-old boy with interesting markings. They remind the staff of the ink blot tests, and hence my name Rorschach. I m a handsome fella who is looking for a home where I can stretch out and nap, curl up and nap, and maybe get a few scratches and rubs in between. I m a terrific boy who is more than ready to find a forever family. 244 Georgetown Rd., Jacksonville, NC www.onslowcountync.gov/animalservices June 2018 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 29

I m learning how to play so I m not sure why humans are watching me. My name is Benson and I m quite shy, but I am coming out of my shell. I like to run around the kennel and play with several other dogs. If you already have a dog who could help me adjust to living in a new home, that would be great! Of course, another option is to adopt two of us from Paws Place! I am a 1½-year-old, male Black Mouth Cur mix and just as cute as they come. Come get to know me, please! Hey everyone! My name is Dodger and I am a sweet and very handsome Pit Bull/ Terrier mix boy who loves to play! I came to Paws Place with an old injury and a skin condition. The good news is that I can live just fine with the old injury. Since I m getting good food and special baths my skin is well on its way to healing. My 1st birthday is coming up soon, June 17th to be exact, and there is nothing more in this whole entire world that I want more than a forever home! Will you please grant me my one birthday wish and come out to visit me? I know if you do, you will fall in love with me! Hey everyone, we are Pippa and Paris, come and see how cute we look! We two sisters were pulled from Columbus County Animal Shelter. We are so excited to be here and we re making all sorts of friends. We Pippa also learned we love to play fetch. We will pick up the ball and carry it around, even though we each only weigh 5 pounds! By the time you read this, we will be spayed, up to date on all of our vaccinations, microchipped and ready to go. We think we will stay small, probably less than 20 Paris pounds, since we are Chihuahua/ Feist mixes. At just 10-weeks-old, we are adorable, playful, loveable puppies who will bring lots of happiness to our new families! Hurry on out and meet us today! Cute as a button, that is ME! My name is Bandit and I m a 5-month-old puppy boy who is ready to go home with you! Although we are not sure what breed I am, we can be pretty sure that I will be big when I grow up! I love to play and I am already getting used to walking on a leash. I have all my vaccinations and I am microchipped and neutered. I am such a loving pup and I give the greatest kisses, too! And as you can see, I sure do love playing with toys. If you d like to make your life a whole lot happier, hurry on over to the shelter. We can play with my toys, snuggle and get to know each other! 242 George II Hwy, Winnabow, NC 28479 www.pawsplace.org June 2018 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 31

Hello! My name is Veronica, and I am a very sweet, but shy, young lady. I was rescued from a dog-fighting ring, so hopefully you can understand why I am a little fearful of humans. My friends at C.A.R.E. and Atlantic Animal Hospital are helping me get over my fear by being very patient with me and rewarding me with lots of treats! I'm hoping to find a family that is willing to continue working with me to help me get over my fear. I am very interested in other dogs, although, due to my heartworm treatments, I haven't had the opportunity to play in a large group setting yet. Once I'm finished with my treatments, I want to be able to run and play with new doggy friends! I am very loving, and I'm approximately 2-years-old, so I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with a family of my very own! Call 910-256-2624 or email carewilmington@yahoo.com for more info or to submit an application for my adoption. Me, I m a little more laid-back and calm. Don t get me wrong, though. I love to play with toys and with him! But my idea of fun is more cuddling and snuggling. Max and I would love to be adopted together (even though he gets on my nerves sometimes) but we don't mind being adopted separately! Come see us soon! Hey, you! Wanna chase a string? How about a toy mouse? Or maybe anything that moves? I'm ready! My name is Max and I m at SOAR with my brother Lou. He s pictured on this page, too! We are about 8-weeks-old, we ve had our first round of kitten shots and we tested negative for FIV and FeLV. We ll be neutered before we go to our new families. We are so cute and we won t be here long, so hurry up and visit! I seeeee you! Hi - my name is Tommy and I love to have fun! I'm a little over a year old, so I am not super-spazzy like some of the silly kittens you will see on this page - I have calmed down a little - but I still have a lot of youngster in me, too! Everyone at SOAR says they love my colors and that I am very handsome and super-sweet. I would love for you to come out and meet me! Check the SOAR website for adoption times! SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) They say these flowers bring out my eyes! And my eyes are very beautiful as is my sleek and silver coat! I m Phoebe, a sweet girl who was found on Oak Island as a stray. The vet guesses that I m about 1½years-old. I tested NEGA- TIVE for FIV and FeLV and am spayed. The volunteers at SOAR agree that my personality is calm and laid-back. I love to be snuggled and would like nothing better than to curl up with you and a good book or movie! Please stop by for a visit soon. My name is Flynn and I m an adorable mixture of Lab, Beagle and perhaps even Pug! I m about 40 pounds and will be 4-years-old in August. I still look like a puppy and mostly act like one, too! The vet said I am in good shape - I have been neutered and vaccinated. I'm doing well with my leash walking and all signs so far point to my having been house-trained. I would love to hang out with you at the beach, or if you would just rather chill in the AC - that works for me, too! Hi - I'm baby Uno. They think I got my name from being the first born of a litter. I'm a 5-month-old, sweet Hound mix boy with lots of energy. I have been hanging out a lot with my sister and we just love to play together! She has already been adopted, though - but that's ok! I am happy for her and I know my furever family will come to meet me soon! I would love to have another dog to play with as well as a fenced-in yard. If you think you would like to meet me, call SOAR today. See you soon! 3376 St. Charles Place Southport, NC 28461 www.soar-nc.org June 2018 www.facebook.com/pawprintsmagazine 39

Feature Story PawPrints Magazine s 16th Annual Cover Model Search The Judges Decisions Are In: Honorable Mentions Foster to Family Member Biggie Submitted by: Eden Macemore Biggie was rescued from Wake County Animal Shelter by Merit Pit Bull Foundation. He originally came to us as a foster dog. He had been hit by a car and had pretty bad head trauma that was causing seizures. Shortly after taking him in, our bratty only fur child decided that although she doesn t get along with most, she LOVED Biggie. I had never imagined her tolerating and playing with another dog so well in her territory but once Biggie had given her a kiss through the baby gate, it was all over. He is the best little brother to her and he lets her bully him around most of the time and doesn t put up too much of a fuss when she steals his toys or is playing too rough. We had to keep him. Biggie is almost a perfect breed ambassador. He is so sweet out in public and he makes friends with everyone he meets (humans and other furry creatures). I have had people say to me on multiple occasions, He s a Pit Bull? I thought they were supposed to be mean? and he proves them wrong every time. He sleeps on his back in his Tooth & Honey pajamas and snores the whole time. He follows me around everywhere I go. He kisses babies and is sweet to puppies. He is also the most handsome little guy you ve ever seen. He would make the perfect model. 40 www.pawprintsmagazine.com June 2018 Misunderstood Princess Whisper Submitted by: Eden Macemore Whisper was rescued as a pup by Merit Pit Bull Foundation a couple of years ago. She was very malnourished when she was taken in and resembled a baby deer because she was all legs and ears. Her ears immediately caught the attention of many people on social media causing her to have lots of interested adopters. She was actually adopted out once but returned shortly after because the adopter could not handle her energy. Whisper has always been a one of a kind girl. She loves to work / play, she has an enormous attitude problem at times, and at one point obsessively chased her tail if she was left alone for any period of time. If she doesn t have an outlet for her energy it only makes everything worse. My fiancé (boyfriend at the time) and I fell in love with her despite her flaws. We have spent countless hours working on her training and playing fetch. Whisper deserves to be on the cover because she is a misunderstood girl - by humans and other animals. She has one of the biggest personalities of any animal I ve ever met. You can see all of her emotions in pictures which makes her the best model. She had a rough start at life but is a rotten princess now and nothing would suit her better than being a cover model.

Feature Story Master of the House Toby Submitted by: Roberta Painter This is Toby who was adopted 4-years ago from Adopt-An-ANGEL. We had just lost our German Shepherd and my grandson wanted to adopt Toby. So, Grandma said all right. Toby was just 1-year old and we were told he was very destructive. Well, they were right. We had a meeting 1 week after we adopted him to decide what to do. The decision was made to keep him, even after he had snapped at us several times and our life certainly did change. Toby the Terror is very strong and active. He has a mischievous side to him where everything is a game. He has destroyed 25 remote controls for the TV, torn up 3 bed skirts, he likes the way they tear all around the bed. Towels, drapes, clothing, they are all a challenge to him. Oh, and I believe pillowcases and the pillows are his favorite? The most important change we made was trying to remember to pick up items like phones and remote controls. He likes his yard and has caught a bird, a few moles and bees, lots of frogs and lizards. If anything moves, he sees it. He insists that he can dig his way to China so he keeps on trying. We fill in the hole, he empties it. Remember, we decided to keep him. He s very protective of his family and has us all trained very well. So, after 4-years with Toby the house is his and he lets us live here as long as we continue to feed him. Peanut Butter, which is his favorite, along with beef, chicken, tuna, etc. etc. He is not too fussy but does not like onions or hot peppers. Of course, he sleeps in the bed with us and has his own pillow. He unmakes the bed each evening, pulls all the blankets and sometimes pillows down and fixes his spot the way he likes it. It took awhile but we all manage to get along and understand each other and have now added a kitten to the family who is well on her way to learning the ins and outs of a furever home. Truck Stop Treasure Latta Submitted by: Paulette Lewis I first met Latta at the Best Western, Exit 181A, I-95 in Latta, SC. I was working in the area and that hotel would be my home for the next 10 days. There was a stray German Shepherd running around the hotel property and the field between there and the truck stop. The hotel staff said she had been abandoned. I went and got some dog food but she wouldn t touch it. She stayed away from everybody never getting close enough to be petted. I sat and talked with her that first day and then went to my room. When I looked out the window, she was lying down in front of my truck. The next day when I came back, she ran to greet me tail wagging but not close enough to be petted. She would do this every day when I returned. Animal Control placed a trap in order to catch her but she was too smart. After about 6 days, I finally got to pet her and feed her. I knew she was coming home with me when I left. I was able to place a collar on her and took her home to Leland, NC. We went to the vet the next morning and the rest is history. When I pull up in the driveway, Latta is barking and carrying on until I get in the house. She always acts excited to see me if I m gone for 2 weeks or 2 hours. She greets me with such love that I am always looking forward to getting home. She gets along with the cats that I have rescued also. Sometimes I think she believes she is a cat by the way she sits on the couch and looks out the front window to see who/what is going down the road. The older cats (12 & 14) will put her in her place. She even tries to fit in the cat bed that we have. When Latta comes and sleeps with me at night, I sleep better. The staff at the Vet love it when we bring her in to be boarded for a weekend. She is always spoiled rotten. She is a very sweet girl even though she is picky in who she allows to pet her. I think she would look great on the cover of PawPrints Magazine. Latta is not the only dog that I have rescued while on the road but she is definitely my favorite. Thank you to everyone who saved a life and entered this year s Cover Model Contest! Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! GREAT DANE FRIENDS OF RUFF LOVE Hi, my name is Teague and I am a 2-year-old male Great Dane. I was found as a stray by a local shelter before my foster mom brought me home. She thinks that I previously lived in a home as I know what couches and beds are for me! I am very comfortable inside and am house-trained and cratetrained. I am working on my basic obedience and leash skills. I love car rides and playing with my foster sisters. For an adoption application, email greatdanefriend@yahoo.com or call 704-584-9257. You can check out some of our other Great Danes available for adoption at www.greatdanefriends.com. CAROLINA BOXER RESCUE Hello future forever family, I'm Monk. I'm a pretty cool guy, if I do say so myself. I was picked up roaming the streets and it had been a very long time since I had a decent meal. My foster Mom and Dad have fixed that. I've learned to do "business outside, and I also learned how to use the doggy door so I don't have to wait on my peeps to get home. I've never jumped on anyone or gotten on the furniture. In my foster home, I quickly became part of the herd with the four other Boxers. I like all of them and think it's cool to lay in a pile with them! Call 910-799-5638 or email carolinaboxer@gmail.com to adopt me or visit www.carolinaboxerrescue.org for info. CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE My name is Elvis and I am a happy-go-lucky guy! I am 11-years young, crate-trained, house-trained and my ears perk up every time I hear my name! I love to take walks with my foster mom any time she will go and I would even like to run with someone who jogs! I am a very spunky Basset Hound! I LOVE humans and I will immediately roll over for a belly rub any chance I can get! If you are looking for a low-key Basset Hound who can be a couch potato when you want to relax but also play and go for walks - I m your guy! If you are interested in meeting me or hearing more, contact my foster mom, Leslie, at 910-352-5150 visit www.cbhr.com. CHIHUAHUA RESCUE & TRANSPORT - SOUTHEAST I m a sweet Chihuahua girl named Joy. I m 4-years-old and 8 to 10 pounds. When I came into rescue, I was pregnant with 4 puppies. After the puppies were born and on their own, I was fully vetted and prepared for my new life. The name Joy was assigned to me because I have a perfect white J on my chest and because I m such a joy to have in your home. Once I get to know you, I love to snuggle and have my belly rubbed. I am spayed, house-trained, vaccinated and on heartworm preventative. To adopt me, please call 910-297-6874, send an email to carolinascoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com, or visit us at www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/. MERIT PIT BULL FOUNDATION My name is Wallace and I m a 1½year-old boy who is seeking an active companion committed to a lifetime relationship. I live with my foster mom. I get along with my canine and feline foster siblings. I don't chew on the furniture or eat shoes. I love naps as much as I love a good run. I prefer hockey over football. Movies: Goonies, The Godfather, Spaceballs, Anything Mel Brooks, really. Food: I love food. Period. Especially peanut butter. Oh, and bacon. Bacon on chicken is better. Hamburgers are good, too. Need I go on? Hobbies: Running, hiking, Tug o' War, Zoomies. To learn more about me or the adoption process, application, and fees, please visit mpbf.org, email info@mpbf.org or call 336-618-PITT. SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS I m Ashur, a purebred male Standard Schnauzer. I was born on November 8, 2017 and weigh 34 pounds. I am microchipped, vaccinated and learning my potty skills and manners but improving every day. My adopter must have experience with my breed and have another canine for me to play with. I am sweet, playful and all puppy! I am a work in progress and the family who adopts me needs to be active with lots of energy! To adopt me, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. You can email adoptions@schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org or call 919-723-7145 for an application. P.S. Mention this PawPrints ad for a $50 discount on my adoption donation! Adoption Celebration 46 www.pawprintsmagazine.com June 2018

My name is Reya! My foster mom named me that because it means 'queen' or 'graceful'. After getting to know me, I'm more of a jester and quite clumsy, but it's ok! Mom is teaching me the 'rules of the house' - which were all new to me, but I'm doing great! During my previous life, I was chained outside so I didn't have many cool things to play with and investigate. So far I've learned to sit and lay down when asked, wait for stuff like goodies and food, peeing and pooping outside only, stopping when I really want to play with something, and chilling out when I get too anxious to play with my foster sisters. I also listen to mom when the fuzzy little cat creature and my foster sisters aren't interested in me loving them so much. We've become pretty good friends and we love to play together. I love those little snacks she gives me when teaching me how to be a good girl. I get a lot of them! She laughs a lot at my silly antics and calls me a goofball a lot. I've only been living in this thing called a house and she already lets me walk around on my own. She knows I run to her whenever she calls me!! She says I listen better than her kids! I also love to cuddle, lay in laps, and give tons of kisses. I love car rides and going new places. Everyone says that I'm the happiest dog ever - and they're right! For an explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees, email info@mpbf.org, visit mpbf.org, or call Merit Pit Bull Foundation at 336-618-PITT. Kitty-Kitty is my name and I am no Scaredy Kat! Instead I am playful and love to be held. They say I am a soft and furry bundle of hugs. I can tell you that I am a healthy, neutered young boy. I am up to date on my vaccinations and my house manners are impeccable. I love human attention and don t mind other kitties. I like toys - both to play with and to cuddle with when I sleep. To meet me, call 910-862-3000 and ask for Katelyn or Jennifer. Add loads of love and sweetness to your home, adopt a kitty today! For more info, visit us online at www.ashelterfriend.org and www.facebook.com/ashelterfriend. I am sponsored by ECM Corporation. Thank you! I am sponsored by Robyn Davis in loving memory of Duncan.
