Quality of Life for Sedona Residents N e w s l e t t e r - S p r i n g 2 0 1 6 IN THIS ISSUE Community News Class Schedule Pet Project www.sccsedona.org

Sedona Community Center Pet Project In June of 2015, John Tamiazzo told Carolyn Bills about a grant application that had come across his desk from the Banfield Foundation. They were awarding grants for the national Meals on Wheels organization for the pets of people who were on the program. Carolyn liked the idea! She wrote the grant and set about visiting Meals on Wheels recipients who had dogs and cats (no one had birds or guinea pigs or fish). People were enthusiastic a program was born. Since June of 2015, 1,444 pounds of quality dry dog and cat food and 690 assorted cans of dog and cat food has been delivered to happy pets. Some things Carolyn has discovered in her travels: Cats are pickier than dogs and they really like fishy cat food, especially with gravy. Cats are also shyer than Vince and Marie Leonard and Blarney dogs when trying to take pictures of people s pets, cats liked to hide under the bed. Both dogs and cats know when the food lady has arrived. People love, love, love their pets. One comment that was funny was My tuxedo cats have turned into snotty little gourmands. Wait. Maybe you should say they ve become a better class of cat! The program, because of the grant money and people s generous donations, has expanded to include services beyond pet food. One dog needed veterinarian care for a chronic ear infection and will most likely need watching in the future. Two surgeries have been performed and one dog almost needed boarding but didn t. As is always the case, other needs arise and can be addressed it takes a village. When a dog with allergies needed to be bathed twice a month, two groomers stepped up to help. A request has gone out looking for dog walkers to help a woman who has a difficult time getting around but who adores her dog. One man is a veteran and would like to have his dog certified as a service animal. A local dog trainer has offered to help him with the process. Dogs and cats alleviate loneliness, provide comfort, make people laugh, encourage exercise, and create a feeling of safety and protection. Anyone see that video of the cat that attacked the neighbor s dog when he came onto the property? And the love goes both ways; a woman on the program lost her old dog to cancer and adopted a sweet small scared dog from the shelter who needed time to adjust. Now he s a playful, fun loving companion. Hopefully, this program will continue into the distant future. Banfield has opted out of the national Meals on Wheels program but donations have kept Geraldine Bass and Buddy Boy us going. Now that we ve seen first hand the bond between these animals and their people, it ll be a priority. Carolyn Bills, Pet Project Coordinator Michael John Hamil and Zena If you would like to donate to this very important and worthy project please call the Community Center and speak to John Tamiazzo. You can also send a check to the Community Center at 2615 Melody Lane, Sedona, 86336. Make a notation on the check that you want your donation to go to the pet project! Any many thanks to John Tamiazzo for supporting this project from the beginning. Thank You! 4

By John Tamiazzo, PhD, Executive Director We have an amazing group of volunteers who make the Sedona Community Center rock day in and day out! Without them we would not be able to provide the services we offer to our community. Volunteers give of their time, energy and huge hearts to help others. Some volunteers serve lunch Monday through Friday at the Center for our community lunch program. Other volunteers give homebound seniors a daily call to check up on them through our TeleCare program. Volunteers help us with our big mailings, like this spring newsletter. There are volunteers who help pack the bags for our breakfast program. Others set up the food pantry and pack bags for our weekend food program. Caring volunteers deliver food for our three Meals on Wheels programs: lunch Monday thru Friday, the breakfast program on Fridays, and the weekend food program that is delivered once a month. And, other volunteers plant, water and weed to keep our premises looking warm and inviting. We keep a log of how many miles our volunteers drive each year to deliver meals and it is an astounding 18,000 miles! Considering that Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek are just a short distance away from one another and that most of the deliveries are in Sedona, 18,000 miles indicates that we are an organization on the move! On Saturday April 23rd we will celebrate our wonderful volunteers here at the Community Center from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Great music, delicious food, tantalizing refreshments and mouth-watering desserts will be served at this fun-filled event honoring the remarkable work of our dedicated and caring volunteers. 5
