CASE STUDY JULY 2016 Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council Working in partnership with LitterGram www.littergram.co.uk Snap it. Share it. Sort it.
The Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC) and LitterGram partnership was born out of sheer determination and persistence. Talking about Danny Lucas persistence, Dennis Gardner from TMBC said Danny just wasn t going to go away, he had a brilliant idea and just wouldn t take I ll think about it, as an answer. Dennis was determined that if TMBC was going to take on this new initiative it needed to work for them. Together LitterGram and TMBC refined the App and Council Portal to be an absolute fit for the council s use. Then we tested it to see if we could break it, said Dennis and we couldn t. The collaboration has proved to be exceptionally successful, with LitterGram being incorporated into TMBC s waste team and wider suppliers. TMBC waste team continue to share the development of both the LitterGram App and Council Portal. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive from the waste team. It is now seen as an extra resource rather than a waste of it. I was a little sceptical about the App initially and the potential impact on our resources, but having worked with LitterGram to develop the Council Portal I am delighted with the results. This is not only simple for the public to use, but is a very useful tool for council staff as well. I would urge all Councils to embrace LitterGram and at least give it a go! Dennis Gardner, Head of Waste & Street Scene Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council Gaining statistics through the LitterGram KPI dashboard on the council portal has helped measure and evidence the litter issues throughout the county in the last six months. 9 Categories of incident that can be reported using LitterGram, including litter, fly tipping, dog mess and overflowing bins. 4% Of all LitterGram reports in the borough relate to incidents of fly tipping. 5 Average number of incidents reported by each Tonbridge and Malling user (representing 0.01% of the population). It is now seen as an extra resource rather than a waste of it.

This is an excellent tool that is helping the Council to receive, action and record reports in a simple and user friendly way. Our residents are providing extra eyes and ears within their local communities and are assisting us in dealing with littering and fly tipping incidents in an efficient and timely way. Councillor David Lettington Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Environment Services As someone who has reported fly-tipping in the past, this app makes it so much easier. I do not have to explain where the litter has been left nor what it is comprised of a simple photo and GPS location does that. I really appreciate the feedback that clearance has happened: it makes it seem worthwhile. LitterGram app user Margaret Wood This is an excellent initiative and is already helping to raise awareness of the issues and assist the Council in its battle against littering and fly tipping. Nicolas Heslop, Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council The close partnership between TMBC and LitterGram continues, following a presentation to the Kent Resource Partnership (KRP), an introduction afforded by Dennis Gardner, more Kent councils have adopted LitterGram.
