CASE STUDY JULY 2016 Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council Working in partnership with LitterGram www.littergram.co.uk Snap it. Share it. Sort it.

The Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC) and LitterGram partnership was born out of sheer determination and persistence. Talking about Danny Lucas persistence, Dennis Gardner from TMBC said Danny just wasn t going to go away, he had a brilliant idea and just wouldn t take I ll think about it, as an answer. Dennis was determined that if TMBC was going to take on this new initiative it needed to work for them. Together LitterGram and TMBC refined the App and Council Portal to be an absolute fit for the council s use. Then we tested it to see if we could break it, said Dennis and we couldn t. The collaboration has proved to be exceptionally successful, with LitterGram being incorporated into TMBC s waste team and wider suppliers. TMBC waste team continue to share the development of both the LitterGram App and Council Portal. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive from the waste team. It is now seen as an extra resource rather than a waste of it. I was a little sceptical about the App initially and the potential impact on our resources, but having worked with LitterGram to develop the Council Portal I am delighted with the results. This is not only simple for the public to use, but is a very useful tool for council staff as well. I would urge all Councils to embrace LitterGram and at least give it a go! Dennis Gardner, Head of Waste & Street Scene Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council Gaining statistics through the LitterGram KPI dashboard on the council portal has helped measure and evidence the litter issues throughout the county in the last six months. 9 Categories of incident that can be reported using LitterGram, including litter, fly tipping, dog mess and overflowing bins. 4% Of all LitterGram reports in the borough relate to incidents of fly tipping. 5 Average number of incidents reported by each Tonbridge and Malling user (representing 0.01% of the population). It is now seen as an extra resource rather than a waste of it.

So what is LitterGram? LitterGram is a free, user friendly app for reporting litter and fly tipping direct to local Councils or via social media sharing. LitterGram is also at the forefront of litter education offering a tool for highlighting the UK litter crisis and working to drive a change in attitude and behaviour. TMBC has been an advocate of LitterGram almost since its inception in 2015. What does this mean in terms of functionality? LitterGram includes a fully developed interface, user management and audit trail tools as well as a KPI dashboard and a mobile version for out in the field. The close partnership between TMBC and LitterGram has seen education initiatives, events and a joined up approach in dealing with litter in the borough with a positive outcome for both public and council alike. Internal management is simple and easily incorporated. Learn more about LitterGram at; www.littergram.co.uk/local-councils An official partnership launch introduced a joint branding partnership logo for use on posters, literature and the email signatures of the whole Waste & Street Scene team. The well-publicised Clean for the Queen campaign, of which LitterGram was a partner, was also an opportunity for TMBC and LitterGram to continue the partnership by supporting the borough with public signage, litter-pickers and hi-vis jackets.

This is an excellent tool that is helping the Council to receive, action and record reports in a simple and user friendly way. Our residents are providing extra eyes and ears within their local communities and are assisting us in dealing with littering and fly tipping incidents in an efficient and timely way. Councillor David Lettington Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Environment Services As someone who has reported fly-tipping in the past, this app makes it so much easier. I do not have to explain where the litter has been left nor what it is comprised of a simple photo and GPS location does that. I really appreciate the feedback that clearance has happened: it makes it seem worthwhile. LitterGram app user Margaret Wood This is an excellent initiative and is already helping to raise awareness of the issues and assist the Council in its battle against littering and fly tipping. Nicolas Heslop, Leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council The close partnership between TMBC and LitterGram continues, following a presentation to the Kent Resource Partnership (KRP), an introduction afforded by Dennis Gardner, more Kent councils have adopted LitterGram. This has culminated in LitterGram working with councils across Kent through July 2016 in a joint campaign supported financially by local businesses as well as the KRP. The #LoveKent, Hate Litter Campaign Powered by LitterGram, involved county wide media engagement, from editorial to radio, TV and local press coverage. The #LoveKent, Hate Litter Campaign was launched at the Kent County Show on 8th, 9th and 10th of July with the media campaign continuing throughout July 2016. www.littergram.co.uk Download your free app for capturing images of litter, fly tipping and other related items using GPS to locate it. Reports are shared with councils, and via social media allowing them to sort it! #LoveKent #LOVEKENT HATE LITTER POWERED BY LitterGram is a driver for change in the fight against litter in Kent. Working together with LitterGram the Kent Resource Partnership and Councils across Kent are, through the #LoveKent, Hate Litter campaign in July 2016, creating a blueprint with captured KPI data of how litter can be addressed in partnership with the community in the 21st Century.
