Specialty Animal By Andree Earley There is a new Veterinary Science Contest at the national level that is somewhat similar to the specialty animal contest. I would like to see us move to parallel this contest so that we could have a team represent us at the National Contest. I will be at the CATA meeting to discuss this.
VETERINARY SCIENCE SPECIALTY ANIMAL JUDGING Revised 6/2008 Purpose and Standards The Specialty Animal Veterinary Science event seeks to effectively prepare the students for the expectations of the animal health care and services (Veterinary Hospitals/Clinics, Grooming Facilities, Pet Stores, Kennels/Boarding Facilities, Feed Stores) workplace. Workers seeking careers in the animal health care field must develop a high degree of knowledge, skill and ability to solve difficult problems. This event blends the testing of skills and knowledge required for careers in the animal science career pathway. Participants will demonstrate technical competency with small and large animals in the areas of: Anatomy and physiology Clinical procedures Identification Health and safety Medical terminology California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards addressed by this event include: Foundation Standards: Listening and Speaking 1.1, 2.2c, 2.2f, 1.8, Technology 4.2, 4.6, Health and Safety 6.2, 6.5, Ethics and Legal Responsibilities 8.3, Leadership and Teamwork 9.1, 9.2, 9.3. Handling and Restraining Practicum participants will be given one handling/restraint activity to complete. Participants are expected to talk through the handling and restraining steps to a judge as they are being scored. Judges may speak and ask questions to the participant at the end of each activity, if time allows. All handling and restraining scorecards can be found in the National FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event. C. Clinical Procedure Practicum participants will be given one clinical procedure activity to complete.. Participants are expected to talk through the clinical procedure steps to a judge as they are being scored. Judges may speak and ask questions to the participant at the end of each activity, if time allows. All clinical procedure scorecards can be found in the National FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event. VII Reasons on Scenario Question the questions associated with the scenarios will allow students to utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills. Participants will be given one scenario based on the topic rotation listed below: 2013 and 2017: Clinical/wellness 2014: Communication/customer education 2015: Behavior/husbandry 2016: Future of veterinary profession and welfare/ethics Sample Scenario give oral reasons on the issue below to portray your point of view with the provided resource. VI. In 2006, a nationwide ruling was established banning the slaughter of horses. Since the ruling, there have been serious growing concerns with the welfare and high number of unwanted/neglected horses in the United States. Currently several states are considering reversing the 2006 ban. What are the pros o and cons of the original ban and the proposal to reverse it? The Contestants will be allowed 45 30 minutes at each judging site to complete that section. (Oral Reasons until completed.) VII. General Knowledge Test (Time: 45 30 minutes) A. There will be a general knowledge test to cover body temperatures, gestation, respiration, heart rates for goats, dogs, cats, rabbits, cavies, rats, and mice. The addendum will still be used. (Addendum: To be created by the Specialty Animals Committee to set definitive values for body temperature (in Fahrenheit), gestation, heart rate and respiration for goats, dogs, rats, cats, mice, cavies, and rabbits). Tool use (from the tool ID list) and the seven dog group classifications (from the AKC). A. The objective multiple choice exam is designed to determine team members broad understanding of the veterinary science field. The written exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions drawn from a compiled test bank of 250 which will be made available to teams no more than 120 days prior to state finals. B. Test will be generated in scantron form including multiple choice, true/false and/or matching. C. The test will be 50 questions in length with each question being worth 1 point each.
