Closing of Entries/Alternates and Move-Ups (AKC Herding Rules & Regulations, Section 13): Whenever trial entry limits have been reached all additional entries that are received prior to the closing date shall be added to an alternate s list for each level that exceeds the published limit (s). This trial will keep an alternate list of five (5) runs per stock/course. Entrants on the alternates list must check in with the Herding Secretary on the grounds no later than 30 minutes before the commencement of their class. Entry fee will be refunded to the alternates whose dogs do not have an opportunity to run. Requests for move-up must be given to the Herding Secretary at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Herding Instinct Test A Herding Instinct Test introduces Collies and their handlers to herding at the basic level. It is designed to show whether or not a Collie, who may have never had any exposure to livestock, still has the natural instinct to perform the function for which the breed was initially created. It is a non-competitive introduction to carefully selected and easily handled livestock under favorably controlled conditions. At a Herding Instinct Test, a person experienced with stockdog training supervises the introduction of individual dogs to livestock, usually ducks or sheep, to ascertain the dog's reaction. The tester guides the approach of the dog to the stock and encourages the dog to herd the stock. The owner stays near the tester, but usually does not take an active part unless experienced with stockdog training. The dogs are typically tested first with lead dragging and then may be let off lead. A dog who, after a period of introduction, shows sustained interest in herding livestock, either circling or attempting to gather it, or following it about to drive it, will pass. A dog who works quietly, who barks (either a little or a great deal), or who may feint as though to nip is acceptable. A dog may be loose-eyed or may show some degree of eye. A variety of approaches and styles is acceptable. Collie Club of America Herding Instinct Test Form This form is used by the tester to record herding instinct evaluations. A copy of the completed form is given to the owner of dog. The owner of a Collie that passes should send a copy of this form, signed by the tester, to the chairman of the CCA Versatility and HIC Committee along with the appropriate processing fee to receive a CCA Herding Instinct Certification certificate. The Trial Secretary will have this form onsite. The owner will send the completed form and a check to cover processing: $5 for CCA members and $10 for non-cca members, to: Jim Smotrel, HIC Chairman 2575 Hawkins Mill Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24503-4968 Phone (434) 384-3177 :: jsmotrel@jetbroadband.com Refund Policy Entry fees will not be refunded in the event that a dog is absent, disqualified, or excused by the Judge or Veterinarian, or barred from competition by action of the Show Committee. If because of riots, civil disturbances, or other acts beyond the control of the show giving club, it is impossible to open or complete the show, no refunds will be made. Refunds of entries pulled after closing date will be made as long as an alternate is available to replace the run; if no alternate runs, no refund will be given. No refund for duplicate entries or any other cause beyond the control of the CCA after the closing date (Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Chapter 11, Section 6) including injured or sick dogs or handlers. In the event of a spouse, sibling, parent or entered dog s untimely death, an event committee decision will be made. Declination of entries: The CCA may decline any entries for cause and may remove any dog on account of disease, viciousness, or other cause and no one shall have any claim or recourse against the CCA or any official thereof. In this case, no refund will be made. Follow * directions above. Non-Regular Classes Non-regular classes will be held on Saturday only. Scores earned in these classes will not count for regular class awards, including High In Trial, Reserve High In Trial, or High Combined. There is no minimum qualifying score, all scores will count for placements, unless the handler retires or is excused. Awards: Rosettes (non-regular placement colors as set forth in the AKC rules) for first through fourth place. First place will receive a goody bag. Pre-Started B Pre-Started B will be run immediately after the Course B runs and will be limited to a maximum of 10 runs. This is a non-titling class, open to collies who have not, at the time of the show s closing, obtained a qualifying score on an AKC B Sheep course. The class will be run on the AKC Started B course using the AKC Started B rules, except for the following modifications. Except for the modifications noted here, the judge will score each run in the same manner as Started B, and all AKC rules will apply. Handlers may take dogs to the handler s post on-leash and may keep the dog on leash until the stock are set. The outrun length will be 80 feet. While the dog must start at the handler s post, handlers may position themselves on the centerline up to halfway (40 feet) between the dog and the stock. (Consistent with the AKC rules for the Pretrial class, the dog must demonstrate a controlled pause before the handler sends it.) After the lift, handlers may move freely about the course. After the dog has gathered the stock, the handler will drive or fetch the stock to the handler s post in as efficient a manner as possible and will then continue along the course in the same manner as for Started B. The handler may walk through Gates 1 and 2. The freestanding pen is not used on this course. After the stock pass through Gate 2, the handler will drive or fetch the stock to the holding ring and will attempt a hold as indicated in the rules for Started B. Since this is a non-titling, non-regular class, there is no minimum qualifying score. However, no score will be awarded if the handler calls time prior to completing the run or if the judge removes or excuses the dog. Placements will be awarded for first through fourth place based on score, with ties broken by the score on the outrun, followed by time.
