Please remember not everyone suggested can be placed on a panel due to a variety of reasons however club member input is given priority. We do work with our sister cluster clubs and also have a policy not to hire the same judge for the same show 2 years in a row. Since we do share judges with the other cluster clubs, we tend to try to hire judges approved for several groups, if possible, to control expenses through judge sharing. Members provisional for any breeds are also given a priority as well as suggestions from specialty clubs for their supported entries. AKC News Scent Work! The American Kennel Club, the leading authority on dogs, is pleased to announce the launch of its newest sport, AKC Scent Work. Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working Detection Dogs - such as narcotics dogs or explosives dogs - to find a specific scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. It is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and the dog. In AKC Scent Work the dog is searching in a pre-defined search area for the hidden odor, which is either an essential oil or handler scent, depending on the class. Searches take place in a variety of environments, including an area with Containers, Interior, Exterior, and Buried. There are four difficulty levels for each element Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Master and factors such as the size of the search area, the number of hides, whether the number of hides is known or unknown to the handler, and the maximum height of the hides will change with the difficulty level. The most accomplished dogs will also be eligible for The Detective Class, which contains many hides in a variety of environments. All dogs (purebred and mixed breeds) can participate provided they are AKC-registered, enrolled with AKC Canine Partners, listed in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program or recorded in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program. We have already received significant interest from clubs, participants, and potential judges, said Stephanie Kennerley, Sports and Events Project Coordinator in charge of Scent Work. Scent Work provides a stimulating activity for dogs. Owners will enjoy watching their dogs use their nose to solve these unique puzzles. We are excited to make this activity a new AKC sport. Because of the tremendous interest, the sport will be ramped up in phases. The AKC is currently accepting applications from existing and new clubs seeking to become licensed to hold Scent Work trials. Approved clubs are being notified and Scent Work will be added to their club profiles beginning May 1. Applications are also being accepted for Scent Work judges. A judge s education class is under development and is tentatively scheduled to be available by May 1. A list of approved judges will be available on the AKC website after June 1. Processing of event applications will begin on August 1. Scent Work trials can be held on or after October 1, 2017. AKC Scent Work is a modern day performance event in which bred-for traits like working drive, concentration and response to distractions are redeployed into roles relevant for the twenty-first century, said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Sports and Events. While the sport of Scent Work will not prepare your dog to be a working detection dog, we hope it serves to demonstrate to the public the value that these purpose-bred dogs can provide to the security of our nation. AKC News Trick Dog Program! The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce the launch of the AKC Trick Dog program. The program will include four levels allowing dogs with any amount of experience the ability to participate. Teaching their dog tricks is enjoyable for owners, mentally stimulating for their dogs and can take place at any time or place that fits their lifestyle. It is easy to see why trick training is becoming so popular, said Dr. Mary Burch, AKC Canine Good Citizen and Trick Dog Director. The primary characteristic of trick dog training is having fun. Tricks can be both entertaining and practical, such as teaching a dog paws up for a therapy setting. Trick dog training makes a team out of the handler and dog. We hope this exciting new program will encourage more dogs and owners to become involved in training. All dogs (purebred and mixed breeds), can earn Trick Dog titles provided the dog is AKC-registered, enrolled with AKC Canine Partners, or enrolled in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program. The titles will be listed on the dog s AKC record and will appear on pedigrees. Trick titles can be awarded by AKC approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluators, and the AKC will also recognize trick titles earned through the Do More With Your Dog (DMWYD) organization. The AKC is proud to partner with DMWYD. Founded in 2005 by Kyra Sundance, DMWYD has introduced trick dog training to thousands of owners and their dogs, said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Sports and Events. By providing basic training to our dogs, whether through CGC training, trick training or in preparation for AKC sports, we prepare our dogs to participate in more areas of our life. Together we encourage all owners to join the fun. To learn more about the AKC Trick Dog program and access the title application form, please visit www.akc.org/trick-dog. The AKC will begin processing Trick Dog title applications on May 1, 2017. Does anyone know a trainer of Trick Dogs in Atlanta area? Let us know! 8

Castle s Capers by Cheryl Lynn West Castle is her Samoyed Puppy He is hilarious and he has lots of fun adventures. I hope everyone will enjoy Castles Capers as much as our Facebook friends do! Castle s Capers: This is Castle. I haven t been having any Capers lately as I have been sick okay, are you ready? as a dog. Mommy is telling people some nasty bug bit me at the doggie shows. I didn t see any bugs and I know I don t have any fleabies as Mommy takes good care of me. That meanie bug must have snuck up on me when I was flirting with the Frenchie Poodles. Hubba-hubba. ACHOO! Now I want to be a hot dude but not this way. I am not allowed to go to class or anywhere else, not even for walks around the block. I even have to be home schooled. That isn t really all that bad as Mommy is a softie. She grades on the cuteness curve so I always get A++. That bug must have followed me home. Loxley and Gwen are now sick. When Loxley sneezes, I tell him Dog bless you. I think that is what I am supposed to say, isn t it? People say something different to me, Bless your heart, Castle. I think that sounds pretty but Gwen said it is Southern for What did you do bad now, Castle? I think I should get a break, being so forlorn. Maybe I will get some get-well treats and new stuffies. I should be cuddling with something soft as I lay on the cool marble hearth. Mommy even put me in solitary confinement, away from Gwen and Loxley. Woe is me, locked in a dark room, all by myself. Okay, Mommy was there with me, feeding me ice cubes and cooling my little pads. Still, it wasn t fun being alone, except that Gwen couldn t bite my butt. Speaking of butts, would someone please tell Mommy that Loxley, Gwen and I do not have a bullseye painted on our butts? Stop with the sneak attacks from behind. Mommy is going to see a temper-tantrum if she keeps taking our temper-tures. Good thing Daddy feeds us cheese when Mommy has the temper-stick. I m going back to sleep now. That makes me feel better. Mommy will watch out for those nasty bugs and keep Gwen, Loxley and me safe. I love my Mommy and my Daddy, too. Cheryl Lynn West, printed with her permission. 9
