Penny M. moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting. The motion was seconded by Julie G. and passed. There were no corrections to the minutes. President s Report Tim reminded everyone that when you are doing a home visit, you are putting your seal of approval on the family that they are a good fit for one of our Goldens. Please make sure you fill out your home visit report accordingly and if you do not feel they are a good match, then please say so on the form. Tim also reported that we received a thank you letter from the Make a Wish Foundation for helping with their Christmas Party. Treasurer s Report Since Beth J. was not present, Tim M. gave her report. Our beginning balance for the month of January was $1,666.39. Income was $2,607.00 ($18.06 came from our Schnucks e-script cards) and our expenses were $2,579.72 leaving us with an ending balance of $1,711.73. Tim also commented that we have received many donations in memory of Shawn Blaes and May Barner and with the passing of member, Ron Graef, we are sure to probably see more in the near future. Membership Report Amy G. reported that we had one membership inquiry and no new members during the previous month. We had two visitors at the meeting that will be new members, Julie M. and Andrea D. Intake Report Penny M. reported that we had four dogs come in in the last month: 011-001 Buddy a 2 year old male, who has not been to the vet since he s been found. 011-002 Ben an almost 2 year meeting, but Tim M. gave her report. No dogs were officially placed during the last month, but Honey will be adopted by her foster family this month. Website Coordinator s Report Paul S. was not at the meeting and his report was not submitted. old male that has seizures. P a g e 2 Dog Joke From doggiesparadise.com As an elderly lady sat on her front porch reflecting on her long life, a Fairy Godmother suddenly appeared and offered to fulfill three wishes for her. "Well," said the woman, "I guess I'd like to be rich." POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned her rocking chair into solid gold. "And I wouldn't mind being a young and beautiful princess." POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned the old woman into an exquisite young princess, with a priceless crown of jewels. "Your third wish?" asked the Fairy Godmother. "Could you possibly turn my wonderful dog into a handsome prince?" POOF: There, in front stood the most handsome young man anyone had ever seen. She stared at him in awe, completely smitten. As he came toward her, her knees weakened. He bent down, brushing his lips across her ear as he whispered, "I bet you are sorry you had me neutered." Our thoughts and prayers are with the following members that have passed away within the last month. Ron Graef and Cheryl Gruber St. Patrick s Day Parade is Saturday, March 12th in Downtown St. Louis! Join GGRR and walk with your dog in the parade! Contact Barb B. for more information or come to our March 10th Meeting. GGRR Events By: Barb Blacksher Our calendar of events for 2011 is attached to this newsletter. Please mark the highlighted events on your personal calendar. There are three events which require a large number of volunteers: The Golden Specialty in April, the Reunion Picnic in May, and the Kirkwood Greentree Festival in September. Please make these three events a top priority. Reunion Picnic Sunday, May 1st Members decided that May 1 st was the best date for our Reunion Picnic, and the Dog Museum is available. We can get into the museum at 11:00 to set up, and our guests can arrive at noon. If you would like to volunteer for the picnic committee, see Amy Gerber. Tri-County Agility Trials Sunday Feb. 20 th The Tri-County Agility Trials will be Feb. 20th from 7:30-2:30 at the National Equestrian Center in Chesterfield Members will be performing several functions running leashes from the start to the end of the course; running score sheets to the secretary s table; and resetting bars that get knocked down during runs or when the height needs to be changed between groups. We still are short some people in both time slots: 7:30-11:00 and 11:00-2:30. Dress warmly, wear something GGRR related if possible, and bring a lawn chair so you don t have to stand the entire time. St. Pat s Parade Saturday, March 12 th The St. Pat s Parade will be downtown at noon. Arrangements will be finalized at the March meeting and through emails to members. Sofar 12 members have signed up to walk, for a total of 27 people and 19 dogs. If you haven t signed up, please contact Barb B. Golden Retriever Dog of the Week April 3 rd at the Dog Museum This year we have invited the Golden Retriever Club and Love a Golden to participate with us from 1:30 4:00 p.m. Having 3 groups will allow visitors to see a larger number of dogs. Last year, it was just Max and Barb and the people who came were quite disappointed. The Golden Club forgot to come, and most of our members were at the Webster Groves Holiday Walk. This event is sponsored and publicized by the Dog Museum so the public can learn more about the various dog breeds. We also need to advertise it on our website. Golden Specialty Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 8, 9, 10 In the past, we have provided breakfast and lunch for the competitors and judges but that will not be necessary now that the arena has a snack bar. Details should be available by the March meeting on what we will be doing. Adoption Day Events Treats Unleashed and Three Dog Bakery in Chesterfield have asked us to hold an adoption day at their locations. We have done little in the Chesterfield or the St. Charles, O Fallon, and Wentzville areas. Not only do these events attract adoptive families, but they also help us bring dogs into our program. This event will be held in the beginning of October. Mike S. will be chairing the rescue parade of 30-50 dogs. He would like to have a memorial wall and sell tags with the family name and dog name and have the wall on display at the specialty. Eventually this wall might be donated to the Dog Museum. More to come on this later. Korisa C. thanked all of the members for supporting our Trivia Night. If anyone has any suggestions for next years Trivia Night event, please let her know. New Business Amy G. asked if our membership records needed to be kept past five years? Tim M. told her that we only need to keep five years worth of records. Amy G. reported that Allstate Insurance approved our grant and they will be making a $1,000.00 donation to GGRR. Tim M. reported that member, Ron Graef, passed away from cancer and the family has requested that donations be made to GGRR. A motion was made by Penny M. and seconded by Pat M. to adjourn the meeting. All were in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

V o l u m e 9, I s s u e 3 P a g e 4 Proper Greetings: Stop Your Dog from Jumping on People From: The Whole Dog Journal (Submitted by Barb B.) There's a common misconception that dogs jump on people to establish dominance. Balderdash! Dogs jump on people because there's something about jumping that is reinforcing for the dog - usually the human attention that results from the jumping. If you want your dog to stop jumping on people, you have to be sure he doesn't get reinforced for it. Here's what you can do to prevent your dog from jumping on people: Educate. Tell friends, family and even temporary acquaintances what you want them to do if your dog starts to jump up. Insist they not reinforce jumping up behavior - even those friends who claim they don't mind! Educational options include telling them to: Greet your dog before he jumps, perhaps even kneeling to greet a small dog. Turn and step away from your dog until he sits, or at least has four feet on the floor, then turn back to greet the dog. Ask your dog to sit and reinforce by petting him if/when he does. Back away from your dog (if you have your dog on leash) and wait for him to sit before greeting or petting him. If he jumps up while you are petting him, simply stop the petting and take a step backward. Resume petting only if he sits. Toss a toy conveniently provided by you to redirect the dog's behavior before the jump happens. Walk away from your dog through a gate or door and close it behind them to keep the dog on the other side.
