SHELTIE WISE The monthly newsletter of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of No. NJ Jan 2006 Club website: www.sscnj.org Pat Marchello, editor --jetsong@comcast.net Meeting Notice February 2006 Please join us at 7:30 pm, Friday, February 3rd at the Westfield Community Center. Guests are welcomed. Directions to the meeting site can be found on the website. We will be talking about our spring specialty among other things. Our spring specialty Sunday, April 9 th Long Hill Community Center Sweepstakes....Louella Eriksen Breed and Jr Show...Janet Turnage Nahikian Jim Rau Dog Shows, LTD., PO Box 6898, Reading, PA 1916 Phone (610) 376-1880. FAX: (610) 376-4939 All catalog ads must be to Irene by February 15 th. The form and cost information are included in this newsletter. Welcome our new member We d like to take this opportunity to welcome our new member, Frank Millata Summary of January meeting. The official minutes will be read at January meeting Minutes for November 4, 2005 were read and corrected. Irene Crum made motion to accept; 2 nd by Lisa Stoddard. President Must do something to get more members and get members we have coming. Suggestion made to put Club info in dog parks, pet shops (non-pet selling), etc. Frank Milatta will get flyer made and send to Elaine. Match Show Bulletin usage discussed again. Use Star- Ledger and other local papers to publicize show. Specialty: Need trophy chair to solicit trophies. Ask Joyce to do inventory of trophies on hand. It is to be remembered that if we solicit $500 does not mean that much need be spent on trophies. A list was passed around and members started signing up for classes to donate trophies. The list would then be emailed to members not in attendance for their contributions. Membership Frank Millata was voted into the Club as a member. Tina will advise Joyce Oscar of Frank s membership. Publicity: Need someone. Herb has been doing. Frank Millata offered. Tina will notify Star-Ledger of show. Sunshine:Nina Levine has passed away. Irene will contact Nina s daughter about planting a tree in Israel or some other donation in her honor. Puppy Referral: ASSA has new puppy referral rules. Specialty Show Issues: Ursula will take position of chair of the judges committee. Everyone will be reminded that they are to stay until after the show for cleanup. New Business: Discussion of money spent on awards. Need to revisit the policy of how we give awards. Over $700 was spent on Club awards. Question whether we should be giving awards for progeny. Thought we should only give awards Sheltie Wise Page 1 of 9

for those dogs that are owned directly by Club members. If you are a co-owner, the dog must physically be in your possession. If a member wants an award for something they bred then that member must pay for it. Also if a trophy is lost or just not liked, member must pay for replacement. One plaque with the sheltie club logo and each time a dog get something, you get an add-on. Alternatively, one plaque for each dog, and then owner responsible for getting add-on. Problem also raised of awards for absentee members. The rule was had to attend meetings or you didn t get award. Tina to tell Joyce to hold up on awards until membership decides exactly what to do. The Board should reinstate the Club policies regarding meeting attendance, active members, etc. concerning Club awards. Irene asked that at the next Board meeting, all policies be spelled out precisely and can get published in the Newsletter the following month; i.e, the Board has reviewed the policy regarding This way issue will not be offensive to anybody because outcome will not be reactionary. Pat Marchello said she believed that once a policy is put in place, it should be part of the website so there is no confusion. Calendars: Under new business, Lisa Stoddard believed we should do our own calendars. She showed examples. She will get info re type, size, costs, etc. for the Club to sell instead of ordering as in the past. Idea is to get member photos and then Club gets together to vote on those pictures to go in calendar. Membership in attendance was very enthusiastic. Brags -- Puppies Don t forget to let me know when you have a litter, puppies or adults available. --Wins/New Titles Buddy and Ursula s tri dog, Marma's Ryan, handled by Nick & Joel, went WD/BW for a 4 pt major yesterday, (1/19) at the Inverness Florida Kennel Club show under Mrs. Lee Canalize. Meera and Ben at 8 weeks (they are now about 3 ½ mos.) I don t know about you, but There are times when I wish they would stay this small and this cute! Buddy and Ursula s puppies taking a rest from play. Advice From Your Dog... If your dog was your teacher, you would learn stuff like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When it's in your best interest, practice obedience. Let others know when they've invaded your territory. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing & pout... Run right back and make friends. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you've had enough. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently. I d like you to meet Meera, Ben and Mickey! Pat Marchello.. Mickey (Tess x Gabe) I d like to put photos of members dogs in each newsletter. Please send me one or two cute photos. Pet Spending: How much is that doggy? From Principal FinaanceGroup s magazine Winter 2006 You can t put a price tag on the emotional value of having a beloved pet in the home. But have you ever wondered about the out-of-pocket cost of Fido and Fluffy? Someone has the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Inc. (APPMA). According to the group, Americans spent an estimated $35.9 billion on their pets in 2005. That s up from 34.4 billion a year earlier. According to the group, 63% of U.S. households own a pet, and 45% own more than one pet. More households own a dog (43.5 million) than a cat (37.7 million) It s been a couple years since I ve had puppies at my house. This year I made up for it by having two litters. Sheltie Wise Page 4 of 9

The APPMA 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Survey lists these basic annual expenses for dog and cat owners: Dog Cat Surgical pet visits $574 $337 Food $241 $185 Kennel boarding $202 $119 Routine vet $211 $179 Groomer/grooming aids $107 $24 Vitamins $123 $3 Treats $68 $43 Toys $45 $29 Irene s puppies enjoy the holidays. Two of these cute puppies are in their new home, and the other two are being grown out by Irene. Sheltie Wise Page 5 of 9
