Background Information Veterinary physician or Veterinarian - A vet is a person who is qualified to treat diseases or injured animals. - vets typically work in a hospitality specifically meant for animals. They can also work in zoos depending on the type of vet. - the interesting thing about this career is that it can fall into many health care pathways. - Pharmaceutical: relating to drugs, the preparation, use, and sale - Biotechnology: the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to improve health care - Animal food industry: different foods for different animals and pets - University Laboratories: labs used for colleges and their teachers, sometimes used for training future teachers - Private research laboratories: labs used for the private research of teachers and scientists - The reason we chose this career was because kianoosh really wants to be a vet. By:Kianoosh,Eduardo,Noah and Dani Job Responsibilities -Veterinarians usually work about 50 or more hours every week on nights and weekends - ⅕ work 40 hours every week - A vet does: health checkups Clean teeth fix broken bones do vaccines perform surgeries -Also, they inspect some animal s living spaces (farms, ranches, etc.) to make sure there s no source of infection for the animals -A Vet needs to have many good characteristics including: Compassion to get along with the animals Communication skills to discuss with the animal s owners Passion for helping animals in need Be caring towards the animal's needs Have responsibility as they make decisions that involve the animals health Required Education - One must complete undergraduate school. - Most colleges require 45-90 hours of undergraduate work. - Most students enter veterinary school with a bachelor degree(whatever undergraduate degree they choose).course work should focus on biological and physical sciences. - Everyone who applies to Veterinarian school must take a college admissions test. - Must take 4 years of veterinary school to earn a degree in veterinary medicine. - Some veterinarians choose to specialize in certain things such as dentistry,medicine and surgery. This takes 3-4 years in an approved residency program to be eligible for certification. - Two of the top Veterinary Medicine schools in America: 1.UC Davis (Davis, California) 2. Licences and Certifications - Bachelor s degree; Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree - Someone who wants to be a doctor must earn a license in a Doctor of veterinary Medicine. This is a four year degree which is earned after completing the bachelor's degree - You must be a College senior and you have to take the exam called the NAVLE or the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. - When applying for the NAVLE graduates must also apply for licensure. They must apply through the state board. This is because they determine the eligibility of the person. - Licensing is the same in California. You need to be approved by the state board as in other states. - Additional training includes certifications and classes to do with science. Courses in high school include trigonometry, biology, calculus, statistics. It's important to take the highest level courses that your school offers. - Certifications aren't required, however they necessary to work with a variety of animals. These animals include dogs, cats, rodents, horses, amphibians, pigs, and cows. This certification is called the ABVP or American Board of Veterinary Employment Statistics The starting salary for a veterinarian is around 65,000 dollars per year, this can vary depending on the state you live in. The average salary for a veterinarian is 98,000 dollars, as of 2014. There are approximately 105,000 people in the United States who are employed as a veterinarian. In California alone there are more than 6,000 vets, which is the most out of any state in the whole country. Second behind California is New York. 58% of veterinarians are female, and 42% are male. Practice. - Someone who wants to be a vet must show the tests they have taken, as well as the species they often work with. - Most of the certifications for vets are orientated towards specific group types - There's the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, the American College of Animal Medicine, and the American college of Zoological Medicine. - There's other certifications for the type of medicine. There's The American College of Veterinary surgeons, Dental, Behaviorists, and etc. - There is many organizations that could represent this profession since there are many different topics in this career.
