At this time of celebration, let us remember that our love of our dogs unites us all. Flat coats do not care about human stress and strife, they just care to be with us and share our lives. That is a blessing that we all should be thankful for. Mary Smith, SSFCR Club President Meet the Breed booth We need volunteers to work in the Meet the Breed booth at the AKC National Championship. The booth will be open December 17 th and 18 th. We need volunteers from 9am until 5pm. We will also need help with set up on Friday, December 16 th and tear down on Sunday evening December 18 th. I m asking people to cover 3 to 4 hour shifts. There will be crating for dogs available. The booth will be closed during Breed judging Jeff Speicher, SSFCRC Vice President

What would happen if you were traveling with your dogs and had an accident or otherwise became incapacitated? What if your dogs got out of your vehicle and ran off? Would emergency personnel or first responders know to look for your dogs? How would they identify them? Would they know who to contact to care for them? include: With Southern Skies new Canine Emergency Tubes, all of that information would be readily accessible to emergency personnel. Put together the documentation, slip the documents into the 12 x 2 clear plastic Canine Emergency Tube, and mount the tube in your vehicle where it is readily visible to first responders when they are attending to your needs (attached to the passenger sun visor, the front or back of the passenger seat head rest or, if there is a clear view to the rear area from the front seat, on the dog crate itself). Some of the documents you might consider carrying in the tube On Board with Me Today one sheet for each of your dogs. Each sheet should contain the name of the dog, pictures of the dog (a head shot and full body shot), breed, sex, color, age, weight, general description, microchip #, AKC #, any identifying markings, medications, temperament (how the dog will respond to strangers), obedience (what commands will the dog respond to), collar color, vet contact information, and list of current immunizations.

A copy of each dog s Rabies Certificate Personal Emergency Contacts your next of kin or other person who should be notified of your situation In Case I Am Incapacitated who to contact to care for you dog. After listing the person who should ultimately be contacted, you might want to list all of the regional Flat Coat Rescue people who could care for the dog in the interim until your primary contact can pick up the dog. Itinerary if you re on an extended trip, list the locations, names, contact information and dates of your anticipated stops Pictures jpegs on a zip drive, to have handy in case you need to make up a Lost poster while you re traveling. The Canine Emergency Tubes come in two styles one with a Flat Coat motif and one with a simple paw print motif. They will sell for $10 each and will be available in December at Southern Skies events or by contacting Susan Klein at sklein1@capecod.net or (508) 776 1457. FUN DAY Thank you all who turned out for the fun day on 16th October 2016 I think everyone had an enjoyable day with their four legged friends and family members, The weather was very kind to us. Robin and I would like to thank all who contributed to the days events including Claire & Marty Koshar for allowing us to use their splendid property, Kelli Riggs for putting together a beautiful raffle basket which as usual raised a significant amount of money for our club, Ahmy Powell for doing an awesome job of photography and sending the pictures to all who attended, the food was catered again and was excellent thanks to Robin & Keith for arranging this. Looking forward to 2017 Robin & Elizabeth Annual Achievement Rosette / FCRSA Donation

It's that time again; time to submit information on all the titles those wonderful Flatcoats earned this year (2016), so they can be awarded their fabulous title rosettes at the 2017 supported entry (Lakeland Winter Haven KC show, February 18, 2017). Just as you could last year, as an alternative you may choose instead of a rosette to have SSFCRC make a donation to the FCRSA Foundation in honor of your dog. The dog s name, owner, and new titles will be announced at the supported entry, and a list of honorees call names (not full registered names) will be sent to the Foundation to be published in the FCRSA newsletter during 2017. If you are a current SSFCRC member and any of your Flat Coated Retrievers earned titles of any kind from any registry or organization during 2016, please email the following information to Carolee Boyles at carolee@caroleeboylesmediagroup.com. Your name Dog's registered name with all titles Dog's call name List of titles earned in 2016 (January 1 to December 31, 2016) Choice of either an annual achievement rosette or a donation to the FCRSA Foundation PLEASE SUBMIT BY TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2016 TO carolee@caroleeboylesmediagroup.com.

Joyce s lovely girl Bette started her career as a special with a bang at the Deland show in September. First time out the gate she took select bitch for a 4 point major. What a way to start out. We just know that Joyce had a very big smile on her face while watching her beloved Bette strut her stuff. Submitted by Kelli Riggs Monty earned his Barn Hunt Senior Title on November 13th at Dare 2 Train in Deland. He achieved this with three consecutive passes in amazingly fast times, 1.07 min. 1.27 min and 2.07 min. He had to find four rats. Hug Your Dogs Yes, we have all heard that phrase. Hopefully we all follow it, too. It means a lot more to us now. The weekend before Thanksgiving our 12+ year old Bunny went with us and Bunny's granddaughter Tori to our remote cabin in Georgia. We woke up on Saturday morning and realized that Bunny hadn't come into our bedroom to wake us up like she and Tori always do at dawn. We went out to her bed and found Tori curled up next to her. Bunny was not moving around. We immediately knew something was wrong. Bunny tried to get up but couldn't. Her head was tilted, her eyes had rapid movement side to side, and she just could not stand. We tried to ascertain the situation and figured she had a stroke. This wasn't fair, it just wasn't her time to leave us. We worked on her and she was awake, and the good thing was that she was hungry and ate her normal breakfast after we brought food and water to her bedside. After she ate her meal I carried her outside so she could do her normal morning routine, but she could barely stand up. She fell over numerous times, including immediately after taking care of her morning business with great difficulty. After carrying her inside we then tried to find a local vet. None were open. So we called upon this wonderful club of ours for help and we received help from both Carol Cassidy and Kathy Leonhardt. After talking with them a vet later returned our call for help. He mentioned a couple of things besides a stroke one being a middle ear infection and the other a disease called "Old Age Vestibular Disease", something we had never heard of. Here is a link: http://thebark.com/content/idiopathic or old dog vestibular disease. I suggest that everyone read this short article to get educated, as the symptoms are just like a stroke. One key difference is the eyes move side to side, not up and down. We took Bunny to our vet first thing on Monday morning. We found that there is hope for improvement! After three days Bunny started to walk, but with difficulty. Our neighbor gave us a sling that we used to help Bunny get outside. But Bunny continued to improve daily. After 5 days she insisted on doing things by herself. She would walk to her eating area. She could get outside by herself. Today as I write this, about ten days after being affected, she still walks like a drunken sailor and her head is tilted. She isn't quite as rambunctious as she was, but she has regained her spot in the kitchen when Donna is preparing a meal. And most importantly, Bunny is still with us. On Thanksgiving with our family we all went around the table and mentioned what we were thankful for. Both Donna and I had to say after being thankful for our family, we were thankful to be spending another day with both of our dogs. We can give them both big hugs each and every day. What a huge blessing it is to be able to do this. The saying to "go hug your dog" has taken on a new, deeper meaning for us. Now, for the rest of you, go hug your dogs. Paul & Donna Kamke
