October -November 2015 Volume 24 ~ No. 07 Page 1 Orlando Dog Training Club Newsletter Updates in the AKC Rally Guidelines Effective December 1, 2015. With the separation of the obedience and rally regulation books, it is necessary to also amend these items in the Rally Regulations. At the September 10, 2015 AKC Board of Directors meeting, the AKC Board approved the following changes to the AKC Rally Regulations. This change is effective for all trials held on or after December 1, 2015. Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 1. Application to Hold a Rally Trial. (Paragraph 4) Require clubs to publish, in the premium list, if two trials in one day will be held concurrently or consecutively. Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 13. Transfers. Clubs may choose to accept transfers prior to the day of the trial and this should be clearly stated in the premium list. Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 20. Judging Program. For all rally classes, the listed start time for each class is the time of the walkthrough and judging of the class will follow. Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 20. Judging Program. Classes scheduled to start at, or after 12:00 noon will be listed to start after noon and must be judged in the order and ring listed in the judging program. Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 20. Judging Program. If the published judge and ring are available prior to the listed start time and all exhibitors have checked in and agree, the judge may start a class earlier than the class time listed in the judging program. (A Club may not start a second trial on the same day before the published start time.) Rally Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 20. Judging Program. No judge will be assigned to judge for more than eight hours in one day. Rally Regulations, Chapter 3, Section 5. Familiarization Time. At the listed start time for the class, a walkthrough of up to 10 minutes will be allowed for handlers without their dogs and judging of the class will follow. After each two-hour period of judging, judges should allow up to an additional 10-minute walkthrough for the next two-hour block of dogs to be judged in the class. Rally Judges Guidelines, Chapter 1, Section 3. Exhibiting. Judges (including provisional) may not handle dogs that are not owned or coowned by themselves or a family member at obedience and or rally trials. Rally Judges Guidelines. Chapter 1, Section 5. Judging Assignments/Assignment Restrictions. A judge may accept an assignment within 30 days and 100 straight line miles of another assignment only on an emergency basis. An emergency basis is defined as an advertised judge notifying a club within 72 hours of an approved trial that they cannot fulfill their assignment. Downloadable PDFs of the new rulebooks can be found at http://www.akc.org/rules/ The new regulation books are $10.00 each if sold individually, and one copy is free to Judges. (Judges should call and give judging number.) If you're ordering them for friends, they still give the quantity discount. If you order 5 or more (of the same book) the cost is only $4.00 each, plus $5.00 flat shipping. **Remember that the Rally book is separate now, so if you need both and you want the discount you will need to order 5 of each. (Total for 5 Obedience and 5 Rally books + shipping comes to $45.00.) Email: orderdesk@akc.org
The Orlando Dog Training Club presented a successful AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day event at the Orlando library in September. Nancy Kelley kicked off the seminar with an introduction to selecting a breeder and the right puppy and informed the more than 120 people watching about conformation. Deb Wood shared with people the option of rescues and how to find the right organization. Robin Hammel discussed what is needed before bringing a puppy or dog home. Theresa Reis presented a session about grooming and care of your dog, ably demonstrating the proper technique. Betty Ann Ogus talked about safety with dogs. She brought Mickey and let the children properly greet him. She also discussed his therapy dog work and how it s another fun thing to do with your dog. Cynthia Margenau and Wanda wowed the crowd with a pet tricks demonstration. Wanda even answered Cynthia s cell phone. Stan Dudek and Robin gave a lively demonstration about obedience and the value of positive reinforcement. Donna McCombs helped with photos, passing out brochures, making discount cards and answering questions. Thank you to all of the participants for a job well done. Page 2
