One Health Concept and the OIE AMR strategy World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 6

The One Health Concept A global strategy for managing risks at the Animal - Human - Ecosystems interface Tripartite agreement of 3 Directors General 3 Priorities Zoonotic influenzas OFFLU, OIE/FAO expertise network on animal influenza Antimicrobial resistance The OIE action plan contributes to the achievement of certain issues in the WHO Global Action Plan Rabies Global control of canine rabies WHO-OIE global conference in Dec. 2015 World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 7

The Tripartite united against AMR Effective and accessible antibiotics are as vital for protecting animal health and welfare and good veterinary medicines as they are for human health Dr Monique Eloit, OIE Director General UNGA 71 st Session, New York, September 2016 World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 8 World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 8

Why is antimicrobial resistance (AMR) a concern for the Tripartite? 9 Antimicrobial agents are essential to ensure human health, animal health and welfare, and food security. AMR challenges control of infectious diseases AMR increases care costs AMR compromises health security and damages economies There is a lack of coherent global approaches to prevention and containment The human, animal and plant sectors have a shared responsibility to prevent or minimise the development of antimicrobial resistance by both human and non-human pathogens. World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 9

What is the Tripartite? 10 A strong collaboration between WHO, FAO and OIE Sharing responsibilities and coordinating global activities to address health risks at the animal-human-ecosystems interfaces Antimicrobial resistance is a flagship topic identified by the Tripartite in April 2010 World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 10

Global Action Plan on AMR World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 11

AMR Global Action Plan Endorsed by Three Resolutions May 2015 WHO Resolution 68/20 Antimicrobial resistance: Draft global action plan on antimicrobial resistance May 2015 OIE Resolution No 26 Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Promoting the Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Animals June 2015 FAO Resolution 4/2015 Antimicrobial Resistance in food, agriculture and the environment 12 World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 12

Conclusion World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 17

CONCLUSION Protecting animals, preserving our future Need to work together in collaboration with WHO and FAO for a coordinated and multi-sectoral approach and other alliances; Need National AMR action plans adopted to the local conditions in Member Countries Sustainable actions supported by investments in the animal health system and within a legal framework to minimize counterfeiting and illegal marketing Strong educational campaign and cooperation among all stakeholders We need your commitments as Veterinarians to put it into practice the principle of Prudent and Responsible Use of Antimicrobials since Veterinarians are part of the solution World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 18
