Longest Married Couple It s all coming up hearts this February, but not just in preparation for Cupid s arrival. In efforts to raise awareness about the importance of heart health, February has been designated National Heart Health Month. Heart disease remains a paramount concern, and leading reason of death, for people aged 65 years and older, according to the CDC. It affects 37 percent of men and 26 percent of women 65 and older. In a national effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by 2017, the CDC is encouraging Americans to make blood pressure control their goal. Adults of any age should know their blood pressure, and if it is high focus on controlling their blood pressure through diet, exercise, and in some cases, medication. We aim to encourage our staff, families and residents to focus on their own heart health this month with these five easy steps to a healthy heart: Five Steps to a Healthy Heart 1. Visit your doctor Getting your blood pressure tested and learning what your blood pressure should be is a great first step to a healthy heart. 2. Stop Harmful Behaviors Unhealthy eating habits and smoking are two of the biggest contributors to heart disease. If you struggle with either of these behaviors, take steps to reduce or quit. 2 3. Increase Physical Activity To improve overall cardiovascular health the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. That is about thirty minutes of aerobic activity at least five days a week. Not sure you can give it that much? Something is better than nothing! Try one of our many exercise classes that we offer throughout the week, you can find them in our activity calendar. 4. Improve Diet A healthful diet of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables will go a long way in improving heart health. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to heart health. Avoid foods high in sugar and sodium and increase amounts of vegetables and fruits to easily improve your diet. 5. Get Good Quality Sleep-- Not getting enough sleep or getting too much sleep may put you at risk for heart disease according to researchers at the Center for Cohort Studies at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. Make efforts to get at least six hours of good quality sleep to help reduce your risks. Show yourself some love this February by focusing on your heart health! Behind every great man is a great woman, so the saying goes. But these days, it s Dale who s the engine behind Alice s wheelchair. The Rockeys are each 99 years old. They met, as kids, just after the turn of the last century, in the small town of Hemingford, Nebraska. I didn t pay much attention to him, really. Did he pay attention to her? Not especially, replied Dale. But, by the time high school rolled around Dale looking suave, and Alice the picture of loveliness things had changed a bit. So, what did they do on their first date? Went out on the hill and parked and looked at the town, said Alice You went and parked on your first date? Cowan asked. Oh yes! she laughed. Alice was a good Catholic girl, so no kissing and telling here. Suffice it to say that, as soon as Dale turned 18 he popped the question. How did he propose? I asked her if she had any money! he laughed. They were married December 29th, 1933 a Friday to be exact. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were appearing in their first movie together. FDR was in his first term as President, and Prohibition was just winding down. Cowan asked, Had Prohibition been repealed in time for you guys to go buy a bottle of champagne somewhere? We couldn t afford that! she laughed. Maybe a bottle of pop! Dale added. By 1958 Dale and Alice were already toasting 25 years together. They were still laughing after 40 years in 1973. Pretty good looking couple, he said, looking at photos. They ve now made it to 81 years, married longer than any couple they know. So, is there a secret to how they ve stayed together so long? Uh huh, said Alice. I ve always let him have my way! It s such an achievement, the group Worldwide Marriage Encounter crowned the Rockeys the Longest Married Couple of 2015. The Rockeys were interviewed by Lee Cowan from CBS News 7

Hand sanitizer stations are available at the entrance and exit of each cottage at Farmington Square. Studies show hand sanitizer reduces germs by 99.9% White Giants You don t have to live in the arctic to celebrate International Polar Bear Day on February 27. The polar bear is one of nature s most awesome beasts and is the world s biggest hunter. Polar bears spend much of their time laying in wait outside holes cut in the ice by ringed seals, who must return to the surface for air every five to 15 minutes. A seal s survival depends on maintaining its series of breathing holes. That seal s survival instinct equals lunch for the polar bear at some point in the future. Polar bears are thought to be as smart as some apes, according to research scientist Alison Ames. Their success at hunting seals in such a dynamic environment is a sign of their brain power. Hunting is a learned behavior that reveals their intelligence. As the arctic warms and ice recedes, polar and brown bear habitats have begun to overlap, and hybrid polar-brown bear offspring have appeared. Dubbed nanulaks by Canadian wildlife officials, the hybrid bears are whitish brown with long claws and a humped back. Offspring of a male polar bear and a female grizzly are called pizzlies; reverse the parentage and it s a grolar bear.
