Name Want to Be President? Read the selection. Then answer the questions that follow. On Top of the News Do you like learning new things? Do you enjoy meeting new people and finding out about their lives? Do you like to discover surprising facts? Do you think that writing is fun? If you answered yes to these questions, you might make a great newspaper reporter. A reporter writes stories for newspapers. Most reporters cover a beat, such as sports, crime, or local news. Local news stories tell readers what is happening in their town. A flood, a train accident, or a new movie could be the subject of a story. Other stories cover news in other parts of the state, country, or world. How does a reporter get the facts for a news story? By talking to many people, on the phone or in person, and by doing research in the library or on the Internet. Reporting a story takes time and hard work. Reporters must find out whether their sources are reliable. They have to be careful and double-check their work. They have to make sure that their facts are correct. Finally, a reporter has to write the story. The opening, or lead, must be catchy to get the reader s attention. The body of the story must answer questions about the topic.
