Their mother passed away when they were very young. Pak Mat remarried Mak Nora. Every day, Mak Nora ordered Rani and Amin to do all the housework. They were not allowed to eat if they did not finish all the housework. Sometimes, they had to starve until late evening. One night, Amin overheard Pak Mat and Mak Nora talking.
