REPORT MANDATORY 08 TINA MARIE SANDBÆK https://tinadesignweb.wordpress.com/blog/
INTRO The Intention for this assignment, where to understand the reality of using creativity in a progress. The assignment was to develop a new dog food product which could be: dogfood, treats or something new. To design a logo which included both symbol and typography. Where all the four steps where divided into weeks with individual steps each week. I started the week with developing new names and researched if the names already existed. After feedback from classmates and teachers. I landed on the Latin name for dogs (Canine) Added Nutrition, and ended up with creating my Canis Nutrition brand.
Research and work progress. I always start my assignments or design projects with researching existing products in the same category as I m going to design. I always want to design something that doesn t exist already. I search on the assignment name to get inspiration from earlier students, and to see if the design I have in my head already exist, I Don t know of any dogfood producer that have their dry food in tin boxes. My target audience will be people that have dogs. As a dog owner and trainer, I know if my dog shall preform its best he needs the best. This means that my product must look professional and have good quality.
DESIGN OPTIONS After researching I was finally ready to start designing the product. I had some ideas that was unique at the same time as this assignment, I was designing a logo for the local dog club. I used some of the inspiration I had on that logo, and created the logo for the dogfood. I wanted the product to have an active look. Compared to the products that is in sale these days, my product does stand out. The packaging I have chosen is not regular at all, specially thinking about dry food. In week two I was supposed to do some research, and design a brochure. I m tired of ordinary brochures, that half folds or trifolds. I wanted to design a single-gate fold brochure. I don t see them so often as the others, so it become more interesting. They are great to use when you want your reader to look straight to the most important elements, and information you have. The layout and structure of the brochure is very clean and organized. I have used guidance lines to make sure it fits proportionally and visually.
Packaging and point of sale. For my packaging, I wanted it to have a professional look, good quality food and not a childish look. I don t know of any dry food producers that uses tins as a packaging. It is recyclable and it is good for the nature, the design is very simple and clean. It contains information about the food and everything you need to know about it. For the point of sale design, I was clear of that I didn t want a cardboard. They are unstable and easily collapse, they also look like low budget. I wanted the material to be wood, easily because it is more stable and tolerate that carts crash into them without collapsing. I sketched some different solutions, posted them on the forum and on our Facebook group to get some feedbacks. I ended up with the sketch 3 of 8 samples. Pulled it into Photoshop and placed my products on it. Got some more feedbacks and got very satisfied. For my typography, I have done some research, I used some time on adobe fonts to find the font that fitted my logo the most. I tried some different fonts as you can see on the scamps. I published it for some feedbacks and ended up with this one: Beyond the Mountains. Which I think fits my logo very well. The Quote used on the front of the brochure Acier BAT Text Noir breaks the smooth logo font with texture and stricter look. The typography layout inside the brochure melts nicely together. The fonts I have used inside is: Adobe Caslon Pro, Acumin Pro Condensed, Azote and Acumin Pro. On the black text on the infographic I have used the standard InDesign font Minion pro, because it is easy to read and it suits the other fonts very well. Colors: I decided to use calm colors on the large spaces, I used Adobe Color to make my color scheme. I chose black for the logo, because it makes it neutral and it fits to most of the colors. For the infographic, I wanted it to stand out and to be a good contrast to the cold blue. I decided to use a strong orange, it gives that eye-catching effect and almost compels you to read the infographic.
Illustrations: All my graphics is in vector format, which means that they can be in any sizes without getting pixlar. To make my brochure more alive I made an illustration of my own dog, to have blurred in the back. A tray to symbolize the amount of dogfood. I used the figures in photoshop to make the dog, that symbolize the different dog weights. I also designed the NO GRAIN, to symbolize that my dog food was grain free. In the infographic, I illustrated a dog with its organs, and the nutrition to show what my brand was giving the dogs who ate it. I illustrated the heart, stomach, bowels, bones, and joints. Self-evaluation: These four weeks just slipped through my fingers, but I was able do a lot of research and I liked the way this assignment was structured. I learned a lot of brands and how packaging works out. I got a lot of great feedback and guidance. The most challenging was to make this design manual in only a week. Ordinary I use the whole assignment time to design and redesign my design manual. But I managed to finish it and I m satisfied with the result of this assignment!
