From our AKC Delegate Reprinted with permission from Perspectives the AKC Delegates' Newsletter that is distributed only to Delegates and Staff at AKC. More Wag - Less Bark // Bark Less - Wag More Remember the old high school cheer: What do we want? What do we need? When it comes to attracting new people into the fancy, the title of this article were it to be followed and practiced, could work wonders toward that end. I felt a palindrome title would catch the eye and hopefully convey the idea in dogdom terms that wagging more and barking less would lead to a warmer and more likeable imagine of dog people, what we believe in and what we do; and therefore be inviting to the possibility of others joining our arena in the world of breeding pedigree dogs, preserving the various breeds, and competing with them in all types of dog-related events. Of course often times when exhibitors and club members are under pressures notably such as: Your dog is slobbering/drooling. (or a similar plea and a polite hint to do something about it immediately), You are next., Hey your number is being called., We need a Steward in Ring 3, Who is the person in charge here?, Where is the Show Chair?, Who hired the village idiot Judge?, How and where do we sign up for the match?, Where is the bathroom?, and all the other various queries of Where is?, Who is?, When is? that transpire at a dog show which are not always conducive to stopping for an introduction and a friendly chat. Perhaps a smile and Let me get back to you later. or I ve got to rush; will chat with you later. would help recruit new individuals into our sport and hobby? No one likes to be put off or ignored. If you must scurry, scurry and check back with anyone you may have had to put on hold. Consider the fact that they are even at a dog show a strong indicator that they could be a candidate to become part of our fold. The fact that someone is in attendance, is an indication of interest in the events taking place. Not to thwart the efforts of august advertising experts but a fortune cookie message I happened upon in last night s take out reads: You can t expect to be a lucky dog if you re always scowling or growling. Good luck in implementing the above suggested methods to help bring new people into our great hobby and sport. Sylvia Arrowwood-Delegate Charleston, SC KC - 4 -

From our AKC Delegate Dear Sylvia Arrowwood, The Event Operations department would like to pass on this information that is of interest to all-breed and group clubs. Questions about this information should be directed to eventnews@akc.org. Conformation Participants Support Starting Group Judging in a Timely Manner We recently conducted a survey of conformation exhibitors, judges, superintendents, and executive field representatives regarding the scheduling of the show day. We found that there is strong support for starting group judging in a timely manner. There are several strategies available to clubs and superintendents to position themselves to meet this goal. There is support for publishing an earlier starting time for groups (e.g.: After the completion of all breed judging for the group and no earlier than noon. ) to provide the clubs greater flexibility if breed judging for all breeds in the group finishes earlier than scheduled. The survey respondents indicated they support changing the published order of the group judging on the day of the show to accommodate the progression of breed judging at the show. There is also support for waiting until the day of the show to post the order of group judging so that it is based on the progression of breed judging. All of these options are available to clubs. When developing your judging schedules please take into account the clear message that was sent to us by our constituents. Once the judging of the breeds within a group is complete, they want the group judging to start very soon afterward. National Owner-Handled Series Optional After January 1, 2016 At their February 2015 meeting, the AKC Board of Directors reviewed the success and increased participation in NOHS. It was voted that the - 5 -

National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) be made an optional program for shows held on or after January 1, 2016. After that date, clubs that hold special attractions with competition will no longer be required to offer the NOHS at at least one-half of their events. Complete details can be found in the February 2015 Board Minutes. Please be prepared to provide your feedback to Sylvia at our meeting on March 24 th or via email to sarrowwood@homesc.com Recipe Corner: Bad Breath Banishers This dog treat helps with doggie breathe. No, this recipe was not taste tested on humans but I received this one from a St. Bernard owner who could pass out from one sniff of her dog s breath. Ingredients 2 cups brown rice flour 1 Tablespoon activated charcoal (find this at drugstores, not the briquettes!) 3 Tablespoons canola oil 1 egg 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 2/3 cup low fat milk Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees 1. Lightly oil a cookie sheet 2. combine flour with charcoal 3. combine well with all other ingredients 4. Drop by teaspoonfuls oiled cookie sheet, one inch apart 5. Bake approximately 15-20 minutes 6. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator 7. Feed 1 per 15 lbs of weight or until you no longer need to hold your breath - 6 -

What made you select your current breed? I was actually looking for a purebred pet and I was tossing between a standard poodle and a Yorkshire Terrier I decide a poodle would require more grooming (silly me). I contacted a local Yorkshire Terrier breeder (looking for a pet) recommended by the National Club, she asked me if I would maybe want to show and the rest is history! I guess I just like long silky hair. I had a pet Afghan Hound a long time ago. Breeder Profile: Barbara Babcock Starstruck Yorkies How long have you been involved in Dog Showing? I bought my first show dog in Dec ember 1998, a 6 mo old male puppy. I was talked into taking him to the Nationals in NYC that February and I was soooo not ready. I had the owner of my puppy's father show him, he placed 3rd in a nice class and it was hook, line, sinker from then on! Have you had more than one breed during your career? I've only had Yorkshire Terriers for show, would love to have a Wire haired Pointing Griffon Do you breed? Yes, maybe 1-2 litters a year. How did you come up with the name of your kennel? It was a spin off of the Kennel name I bought my second show dog from. How many dogs sleep in bed with you? None. I would be too afraid of them jumping off and breaking a leg. If you had to advise a new person how to get involved in dog shows, what would that advice be? Find a respectable mentor! I had two people that helped me get started in showing dogs. One was local and was able to help me with the grooming and got me into handling classes, the other was from KS and she introduced me to others in my breed that were helpful in breed health issues, grooming, supplements, etc. In what, if any, other dog sports do you participate? None at this time. Since my breed are ratters, I would like to try barn hunts. - 7 -
