Ridgeback Rambles Orange Coast Rhodesian Ridgeback Club President s Message Can t attend a Thursday general meeting? You asked for it, you got it! Barbara & Ron Dickson have graciously agreed to host a Saturday evening general meeting and barbeque potluck at their home in Yorba Linda on Saturday, September 13. OCRRC will provide the main course if you plan to attend, please bring a side dish, salad or dessert. With so many great cooks in the club, dinner is guaranteed to be delicious! The focus of the evening will be an informative discussion about dog shows and dog show etiquette inside and outside the ring by noted AKC judge Ms. Dany Canino followed by a question and answer session. Look for more details inside this newsletter. I look forward to seeing some new faces in attendance mixed in with the regulars! Thanks to the outstanding efforts of show chair Catherine Schock, lure coursing chair Debra Driza and the show committee, OCRRC s 17 th Annual Regional Specialty Show and Lure Coursing Test/Trial lived up to its theme A Summer Safari. Our club members outdid themselves in their desire to put on a great event, from morning and evening hospitality, to the beautiful safari-themed trophies and decorations, the bountiful sales table and the gorgeous raffle table laden with magnificent prizes. And, of course, some of the finest Ridgebacks in the country! Look for full details in the specialty wrap up elsewhere in the Rambles and view pictures of the winners at www. ocrrc.org. After much deliberation, the BOD recently voted to hold our 18 th Annual Regional Specialty at the beautiful Oaks/Blenheim Equestrian center in San Juan Capistrano on May 8 th, 2004, followed by the Western Hound Show and the Shoreline all-breed show on May 9 th and 10 th, respectively. After a short break to enjoy the summer, specialty planning will resume all over again in the fall. Hope to see you and your hounds at an upcoming event! No quorum present, so unable to approve last meeting's minutes. Recording Sec. not present, minutes taken by Rebecca Eastman. President's Report: Mike Patterson Congratulations to Linda Robbins on a really successful and fun Spring Match. We are still looking for an Editor for the `Ridgeback Rambles.' Somebody needs to step up to the plate and take on the challenge of editing and publishing our very important newsletter. Vice President's Report: Leslie Walker The Carmen Battaglia article, "Selecting Sires," will be published in our next newsletter. I am looking at having an educational presentation at our September General meeting, maybe in conjunction with a Bar-B-Que/party. Corresponding Secretary's Report: Barbara Rupert Nothing to report at this time Treasurer's Report: Catherine Schock Checking: $5,628.43, Regular Savings: $126.41, CD Savings: $6,294.17 We have received thank you letters for our donations from: AKC Canine Health Foundation - RRDAF, American Dog Owners Association - Educational Fund One check received at the Spring Match included a trophy donation, so the Match income is slightly lower.

Trophies have not all been sponsored, there are $385 worth still available. We will be incurring new expenses this year for ring equipment rental. Pop-up tents will be allowed this year, but NO mats or expens. Specialty Raffle: Debra Drastrap Would the club have any merchandise donations for the raffle? Yes. Lisa Patterson will coordinate with Debra. Specialty Lure Coursing: Leslie Walker We have received 9 entries for tests & trial, as well as 10 lunch reservations. (in favor) Catherine Schock pointed out that there was an error in labeling the OCRRC 2002 Year End Top list in the last newsletter. It was labeled as `OCRRC Top Ten Thru 30 Mar 2003.' We will re-list it in the next newsletter. The copy posted on our website is correct. The AKC Eukanuba Classic will be in Long Beach this December. There will be `Meet The Breed'-type booths. RRCUS wants to work in conjunction with OCRRC to create the booth that will win the `Best Breed Booth' contest! We will need two groups of volunteers: Set-Up and Education. Contact Mike Patterson to be involved in this venture. John Rogers suggested that OCRRC allow Professional Handlers to exhibit in our Veteran Sweeps, in the future. No General Meeting this July. Next Board Meeting will be Thursday, June 12 @ Marie Callendar's in Anahiem. Lisa Patterson moves to adjourn, Leslie Walker seconds. Meeting adjourned at. Page 8 REGIONAL SPECIALTY REPORT OCRRC S 17 th Independent Specialty Show - A Summer Safari was a resounding success despite the rough beginnings the show committee encountered. Our worries about the change of date and venue were allayed when Show Superintendent Jane Garvin reported that 151 Ridgebacks were entered with a total of 223 entries! Thanks to KCBH Show Chair Don Ingamells we had a lovely location for our rings and the exhibitors were able to get comfortable and camp out for the weekend of showing. This year s activities started on Friday with a Lure Coursing Trial and Test held at Irvine Lake in Silverado. Field Trial Chairperson Debra Driza and her committee consisting of Leslie Walker, Linda Cannon, Nancy Brandewie, Deborah Adams and Frank Yeh put on an efficiently run trial that was enjoyed by all in attendance. A special bonus was the lunch offered by Nancy Brandewie and Linda Cannon. Conformation judging commenced bright and early the next morning. But no dog show can begin without the National Anthem and what a special rendition it was! Leila Bicos Jr. Showman extraordinaire performed her acappella version of the Star Spangled Banner to the delight of all in attendance. Mary Lynne Elliott initiated a day of superlative judging with the Veterans and Puppy Sweepstakes classes. Ms. Elliott had a respectable entry in both age groups and thoroughly enjoyed the assignment. At 10:30 Valerie Hamilton-Preston stepped into the ring to begin her full day of regular class judging. Mrs. Hamilton-Preston maintained her cheery demeanor throughout the day giving the exhibitors clear, precise direction in the ring. Both judges benefited from the expertise of Ring Stewards Ron & Jackie Wassenaar who kept things flowing smoothly during yet another specialty. Obedience judging went on simultaneously in an adjacent ring with Mrs. Shirley Indelicato adjudicating the exhibits ranging from Novice to Utility. Thank you to Obedience Show Chairperson Dotty Ambrose and her efficient ring stewards for a job well done. You will find complete judging results published elsewhere in this Rambles. To make this Specialty really special our official show photographer was club member Theresa Lyons the talented and vivacious editor/publisher of The Ridgeback Register. Theresa had a great photo session at the end of judging for posed win pictures and she took several candid photos throughout the day. She was even able to have proofs of her photos available for viewing the next day at the KCBH show. Talk about great delivery! Our show catalog this year turned out especially nice due to the efforts of Lisa Patterson, Theresa Lyons and new Show Superintendent Garvin Show Services. This truly was a winning combination of talents! The Swingin Safari Raffle was totally awesome thanks to Raffle Chair Debbie Drastrup and her assistant Rebecca Eastman. The Grand Raffle prize, theme baskets designed by Debbie and the wonderful product donations enticed many attendees to try their luck and several went away with great stuff! Rebecca Eastman should also be commended for her undaunted work on the OCRRC Commemorative Poster that was such a hit with several of those present. The profits from the sale of these posters will be donated by OCRRC to the Canine Health Foundation. OCRRC club merchandise went like hotcakes thanks to Linda Robbins and her ability to know what s going to sell and to Mindy Smith and Nick McCracken for being great sales people. Linda also demonstrated superior salesmanship by finding a sponsor for every trophy again this year! Thank you Linda and thanks to all who supported the club with a trophy donation. The exhibitor s nourishment needs were looked after throughout the day by Myrna Berger and Lanise McCracken providing a sumptuous morning hospitality spread, Sara and Steve Glasser disbursing box lunches and Nancy Brandewie, Linda Cannon and Debra Driza dishing up a great BBQ meal at the end of the day while Joe Berger proffered his tasty and satisfying margarita s. Many cases of bottled water were donated by members and friends including Karen Brown, Rebecca Eastman, Marco Solorio, Ron Bourguignon, Juan & Lisa Gutierrez, Sara Glasser, John Rodgers, Reza & Lynne Scott so that no exhibitor would go thirsty. Thanks to all that contributed. (I hope I didn t forget anyone.) Regional Specialties always require hours and hours of preparation in order to be successful, Lisa and Mike Patterson can attest to that. Acting as Assistant Show Chairs this year their experience and guidance was invaluable to me in the planning stages, during and after the show. Dick Rupert s help with logistical grounds issues the day before and during the event was a great relief. Thanks to Barbara Rupert for helping set up the trophy table, to Joe Berger for preparing and passing out the exhibitor date pins and to Kathy Main for her unexpected contribution that will help to defray specialty expenses again this year. The team effort by club members helping with set up and take down included: Mike & Lisa Patterson, Jay Schock, Juan & Lisa Gutierrez, Loraine Mendoza and her golf cart, John Rodgers, Linda Robbins, Lee Nudo, Mike & Suzanne Miller and Vickie Marx. Your hard work and support are greatly appreciated. Specialties would not exist without exhibitors and spectators and OCRRC is truly blessed to have such loyal supporters. I m pleased that our Club s team spirit enabled us to offer another truly special Orange Coast Regional. Please plan to join us next year. Plans are already underway for a very exciting 18 th. OCRRC Specialty Lure Coursing A big thanks to all who came out and participated on Friday in OCRRC s coursing test and trial. We had a great turnout! After a little bit of a rough start, the trial seemed to flow pretty smoothly (well, except for those huge trucks that kept trying to come on the field. Who invited them, anyway?) We got to witness the entire spectrum of RR runs, from the beautiful follow of the first time trial-ers to the..er more creative coursing of the seasoned hounds. Thanks to our field secretary, Leslie Walker, our judges and lure operator, and also to our dedicated volunteers, without which there would be no trial. Also, a special thanks to Nancy Brandewie for donating the morning hospitality and to Linda Cannon for putting together the great lunch. Hope to see everyone next year!
