PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear All, I hope all of you and your Dutch Shepherds are doing well this fall. I am pleased to announce there are three more Longhaired Dutch Shepherds in the USA, as my bitch Donja just had her last litter of puppies. The reason I bring this up is that; 1) I am very happy about the pups, and 2) More importantly, I will be registering the pups with the AKC and then transferring the pedigrees to the new owners. You may wonder why I am doing the registration and not leaving it to the new owners? Well, the only way to absolutely ensure that all pups get into the FSS is for the breeder to register the pups. If you rely on new owners, some will register and some won t, and we need to show the AKC that there are Dutch Shepherds in the USA through the number of dogs registered in order to continue on the road to full recognition. With the first two litters from my kennel, only a limited number of dogs were entered into the FSS, as I could not locate some owners and others just would not bother to register their puppies even when I filled out all the paper work for them. On a different AKC note, The ADSA has a very good relationship with the AKC, thanks to Carole s communications with the AKC, and as a bonus, I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the AKC has its national headquarters. After going to the AKC to meet with people, I now see them regularly at AKC sponsored events and this is good for our club and the Dutch Shepherd in the USA. Finally, I would encourage everyone to send in pictures for the second annual ADSA calendar, would like to thank Cindy Coombs for joining me at the AKC Meet the Breeds in Raleigh on September 20 th, and also thank Carole for sending out the breed standard to AKC Judges that will be judging Dutch Shepherd. I personally met a judge who had received the standard prior to judging the Dutch Shepherd and she was so appreciative, she also said others don t do this and it was a great help. It s a beautiful time of year, get out and enjoy it with your dog. Kent Rupprecht 2

NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS Bonnie C. McDonald Bonnie Mcdonald is on the list for one of Kent's puppies after a failed attempt to get one from Europe. (Shipping problems.) Here is a summary of her 7 page membership application. If you would like to receive the entire application, let me know and I will email it to you. To summarize, she comes from a dog family. Her mother was a breeder and she has done most everything with dogs, conformation, herding agility obedience and even IPO, scent detection and SAR. Has had several German Shepherds in the past, and several other breeds, and currently has Border Collies and one GSD. Became interested in the Dutch Shepherd 20 years ago through a friendship with Diane San Lorenzo (KNPV DS ). In 2011 had the #1 Border Collie and #1 GSD in AKC Agility, and competes on the national and international level. She is an AKC (and other venues) Agility judge and also active in the Bahamas Kennel Club. She lives in Florida. Kent Rupprecht and Carole Goetzelmann are her sponsors. Comments regarding Bonnie's application can be sent to any board member in the next 60 days. Here is her website. http://sonlightranch.com/ Suzanne Wright and Amanda Smith On September 29 I received membership applications for Suzanne Wright and her daughter, Amanda Smith. They both live in Florida and are very involved in dog activities. Suzanne is a founding member of the Greater Orange Park Dog Club (1978) and has served as show chairman and assistant show chair and judges selection chair. Is a member of too many breed clubs to mention here. Was in Lhasa Apsos for 20 years (15 litters), Kerry Blue Terriers for 43 years. Brought 2 Laekenois from Portugal, but both died from genetic diseases. Add Italian Greyhounds and Papillions to her list of dogs shown in conformation. She is interested in Conformation, Obedience, Rally, maybe Agility and Herding. Is very willing to help the club. She now owns one of Anita's puppies from a prior breeding, Ranchodutchies Ruw, who was rehomed from the original owner. I can email a scanned copy of her application to anybody who is interested. Her sponsors are Anita Arnold, and Cindy Coombs. Pease send any comments regarding her application to any of the board members in the next 60 days. FCI APPROVAL OF INTERVARIETY BREEDING Nellie Nugteren The Raad van Beheer (Dutch Kennel Club) has approved the plan to crossbreed the varieties. It has taken a lot of time, but during the next 20 years we can breed the SH x LH, and the SH x RH. The LH x RH is not allowed by the FCI. It means that this month a SH male will mate to a LH female. All of the pups will have the SH coat and will get SH pedigree papers in the appendix G-0. These offspring are allowed to be used to spread the genes in the SH and LH populations. If one of the G-0 pups is bred to a full bred SH again, those offspring gets the appendix G-1. A mating between a G-1 and a full bred SH will give appendix G-2. And a mating of a G-2 and a full bred SH will give full pedigree again. Now for the LH a different path had to be chosen. Keep in mind that SH is dominant over LH. We have the SH offspring with SH pedigrees. Now I crossbreed this G-0 SH generation with a full bred LH and in the litter we get 50% SH and 50% LH. Since officially this is another variety breeding, this generation gets the G-0 again with SH pedigree papers. Breeding this G-0 generation to a full bred LH will give SH and LH puppies in the same litter again. This generation will get the G-1 SH pedigree papers. After being judged by 2 judges at the Nestendag at the age of at least 12 months the SH pups will stay SH and the LH pups will get LH G-1 pedigree papers. Mating a G-1 with a full bred LH will give G-2 LH pedigree papers. And mating a G-2 with a full bred gives full bred pedigree papers. The decision has been made to crossbreed the SH x RH for spreading genes in the RH population only. So all pups will get G-0 RH pedigree papers. A G-0 mated with a full RH will be G-1. A G-1 mated with a full RH will be G-2. A G-2 mated with a full RH will be full bred. Every SH that will be used for breeding to the RH must have GD-tests done. Every crossbreeding combination must be approved by the Nederlandse Herdershonden Club. Editor s Note: The above system of intervariety breeding has been approved in The Netherlands by the Dutch Kennel Club. Other country s kennel clubs will need to decide if they will also approve intervariety breeding. In the AKC there is no mechanism to prohibit or track intervariety breeding since all three varieties are combined under one breed name. Therefore, it is proposed for discussion that any intervariety breedings in the USA follow the Dutch guidelines and that the puppies names be registered with an annotation of G0, G1, or G2, for reasons of disclosure to puppy buyers. There has been one breeding between a SH and RH in the USA. The puppies were not registered because the SH was never AKC FSS registered. 5

BRAGS! Small Yard's Boaz completed is AKC RAE title on Sunday September 21 at the Columbus Indiana Kennel Club Trial. I am very proud of my little boy! To complete an RAE title, the dog must first complete the Rally Novice, Advanced and Excellent titles. Afterwards, the RAE title is earned when the dog completes 10 Double "Qs", one Advanced level and one Excellent level, with scores of 70 or above. A Dutch Shepherd at the FCI World Championship Agility 2014 in Luxumbourg. Aika's Mystery Devil Hudi #98 handled by Anna Winkel made the 5th spot on the Luxembourg Large Dog team. My understand is that this is the alternate position for the 4 dog team. Photo thanks to Ingmar Pill from Estonia. 6

GONIODYSPLASIA IN THE ROUGH HAIRED DUTCH SHEPHERD Cindy Coombs What on earth is goniodysplasia you might ask? Well, I wondered the same thing. As it turns out, the answer was not that easy to find because it is not a disease that is routinely tested for in the United States. The eyeball contains vitreous fluid, which maintains the shape of the eyeball. This fluid is constantly replaced, and the old fluid is drained off. The pectinate ligament is a fibrous band radiating from the base of the iris and inserting in the inner surface of the eye s cornea. This band is responsible for transporting the fluid out of the eye. When this structure is malformed, the spaces for draining fluids become constricted and the fluid can t drain properly, which causes pressure to build up in the eye. This disease occurs in as many as 60 breeds of dogs, including the Rough Haired Dutch Shepherd. Because this condition is not routinely tested for, dogs often live their lifetime with it and never have a problem. In some dogs, though, the condition can lead to swelling in the eye and glaucoma. A minor trauma to the eye can cause the swelling to become uncontrollable very quickly, causing red blood vessels to become visible and the cornea to look blue. This is an emergency medical condition that requires immediate treatment. There is no cure, but often glaucoma medicine can provide relief. If that effort fails, surgical removal of the eye may be necessary. Examining a dog for the presence of goniodysplasia is not expensive, but it may be hard to find a vet qualified to do it. Start by visiting www.acvo.org. This is the web address for The American Collage of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. In order to become a AVCO specialist, advance training in animal ophthalmology is necessary. As most of you know, you can (and should) get your dog s eyes OFA certified prior to breeding. For the rough hairs, they need more than just the regular OFA eye exam. They will need a gonioscopic exam done as well. The AVCO vet in my area charges $280 for an ophthalmology consult. But for the routine OFA eye exam including the gonioscopy and tonometry, it s a bargain at only $91. If you do choose to have the gonioscopy done in conjunction with an OFA eye exam, the gonioscopy must be done first because no drops can be used. Gonioscopy provides information on how the iridocorneal angle, or ligaments, appears. I was in communication with Kristina Narfström, (DVM, PhD ECVO Professor of Vet Ophthalmology) and she stated that the AVCO eye exam form is very similar to the form used by EVCO (European Collage of Veterinary Ophthalmologists) and will provide us with the same information. Ok so now what do the results tell us? There is speculation that there is a genetic component to goniodysplasia, but there is no hard evidence. Dogs that are dysplasia free can have pups that are affected and affected parents can give birth to non-affected pups. At this time there is no DNA marker for it. The Dutch breed club in The Netherlands (NHC) requires that all rough hairs be tested prior to breeding. And although not required, the breed club also encourage all owners of rough hairs test their dogs so that entire litters can be tracked. A fact sheet about goniodysplasia is given to all new rough hair owners so they can become educated. The more data they have, the better this disease can be monitored. They are studying the results of this testing, looking for clues, trying to solve the mystery. So let s support them in their efforts and test our dogs too. The cost is not great and the benefits could one day prove to be priceless. Editor s note: The gonioscopic exam only needs to be performed once in the life of a dog. OFA eye exams are performed routinely over the course of a dog s life. 7

OFA EYE EXAMS (FORMERLY CERF) Carole Goetzelmann The purpose of regular OFA eye exams, especially for breeding dogs, is to monitor the eyes health and provide information regarding canine eye diseases, some of which are hereditary. Since some hereditary eye diseases do not present until the dog is older, it is normal to take a dog in for an eye exam on a regular basis. Some breed clubs recommend the exam be performed every two years, some clubs indicate that the eyes should be tested before breeding, and again at a later age, for example, at age 7. The OFA exam is usually inexpensive, and available during advertised clinics, or at large dog show clusters for about $40. The ACVO Veterinarian conducting the exam is looking for indications of cataracts, PRA, CEA and many other disorders of diseases of the eye (see form below). The dogs eyes are dilated about 30 minutes prior to the test, and the test is performed in a darkened room with indirect ophthalmoscopy and slit lamp biomicroscopy. The test is not invasive in any way, and even my Malinois sat still while the doctor looked into her eyes with his equipment. The results of the test may be registered in the OFA database. There are 10 disorders for which there is an unequivocal recommendation against breeding in all breeds. Dogs diagnosed with any of these 10 conditions are not eligible for OFA Eye Registry certifications. 1. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) 2. Cataract - unless the examiner has also checked the space for significance of above cataract unknown or unless specified otherwise for the particular breed. 3. Lens luxation or subluxation 4. Glaucoma 5. Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) 6. Retinal detachment 7. Retinal dysplasia 8. Optic nerve coloboma 9. Optic nerve hypoplasia 10. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) For more information on OFA Eye Tests, visit www.offa.org. 8

WHEN IS YOUR DOG NOT YOUR DOG? Carole Goetzelmann On April 17, 2014, a Champion Shetland Sheepdog was lost. The owner who lives in Pennsylvania, took a trip to Missouri for the Sheltie National Dog show. She left her dog, Piper, at a friend's house in Franklin County, Ohio, on the way. Piper bolted from the fenced yard, and was picked up a few blocks from where she escaped and taken to the Franklin County animal shelter while her caretakers were frantically searching for her. Luckily Piper had a microchip. So on April 18 (Good Friday) the shelter got the contact information from the microchip company, which was the veterinarian who implanted the chip, and phoned them that afternoon. The veterinarians office told the shelter they would call back after retrieving the owner information. But sometime during the weekend, the shelter decided to give the dog to a local Sheltie rescue rather than follow up with the veterinarian's office for the owner information. The shelter clearly violated the county rules to hold a dog for 3 days, which should not have become an issue since the dog was microchipped and a phone call on Monday morning would have revealed the owner s name and contact information. The owner tried to convince the Sheltie rescue to release the dog to her, but the rescue refused citing that by law, the dog was theirs now. And after a judge ruled the dog should be returned, the rescue opted to fight in court to keep the dog. The court date is set for later this month and everybody is eagerly awaiting the outcome. Laws vary by state, but microchipping your dog, and insuring that the microchip is registered, is the effective way to prove ownership of your dog if it should become lost. In addition to all the companies that sell microchips and their services, the AKC also sells microchips that can be implanted by your dog s veterinarian. The cost for a single chip including registration is $24.95. https://www.akcreunite.org/cares-pub/microchip/microchipproducts.car?catalogname=iso Many Responsible Dog Ownership events have low cost microchipping, usually about $10 or $20. In addition to registering the chip with the chip s manufacturer, you can register the chip with AKC Renuite for a onetime fee of $17.50. This is a good option for imported dogs with chips from their country of birth. http://www.akcreunite.org/ And finally, an online resource to see where a chip is registered. http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org/ The ADSA strongly encourages all American Dutch Shepherd breeders to microchip their puppies before they go to their new homes. To learn more about the plight of Piper the Sheltie, just google, Piper Lost Sheltie. The American Dutch Shepherd Association is a not-for-profit organization. Our Mission is to promote and protect quality and versatility in the purebred Dutch Shepherd, to educate members and others about the breed, to encourage the highest standards of ownership and breeding, and to strive to bring the breed s natural qualities to perfection. 9
